There is controversy over the value of ultrasonic screening for detection of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) in babies. We scanned 300 newborn babies and identified 53 with a dilated renal pelvis or other minor abnormalities. INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy now represents a valid alternative to traditional surgery in the treatment of gallstone diseases. For the past twenty years laparotomic cholecystectomy has represented the golden standard of gallstone treatment given its extremely low mortality rate (0.5%) and equally acceptable morbidity rate. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy now appears to have taken over the position of elective treatment. Sophisticated techniques, such as ultrasound scalpels make this form of surgery particularly safe.

Lingual goitre was found in two adolescents suffering from mild dysphagia. Since there were typical changes in lingual sonomorphology, sonographic evaluation was easy to perform. Lingual thyroid was less echogenic than normal thyroid tissue. Ultrasound may support the decision of the initial treatment and is useful to guide further therapy.

The objective of this paper was to determine the quantitative bactericidal efficiency of ultrasonic in the root canal. Four test organisms found frequently in the root canal were compared. The result showed ultrasonic can kill the test organisms effectively in the root canals. The best bactericidal efficiency occurred at 4 or 5 min. of ultrasonic though the more efficiency as the time longer. Bactericidal irrigation could increase the bactericidal efficiency of ultrasonic and its bactericidal action similar to irrigation bactericidal property.

Twenty patients with tuberculous pleural effusions were studied with ultrasonography. In 18 patients, ultrasonography demonstrated regular pleural thickening which was less than 1 cm except in 1 case. 1200 neonatal hips were examined by ultrasound and 30 dysplastic hips (2.5%) were detected, which required immediate treatment. Almost half of these dysplastic hip joints (1%) did not show any clinical signs of instability and had negative family/obstetrical history. These "silent" cases would not have been diagnosed and would not have got their early therapy without the ultrasound screening. The results of this investigation support the necessity of hipsonographic screening of all newborns.

Errors in the ultrasonic diagnosis of diseases of the abdominal organs in 2,218 patients were analysed in comparison to endoscopic and operative findings. The errors were few in number. A precise diagnosis was established in 99.6% of cases with acute cholecystitis and in 78% of those with a pathological process in the biliary tract. A maximum number of errors (7 per 42 cases) was encountered in carcinoma of the gallbladder. Ultrasonic examination may serve as the basis for choosing the method of rational therapy in diseases of the liver, pancreas, and complications in the postoperative period.

A program of rapid mass screening of kidneys was conducted with ultrasound for initial detection of renal and the adjacent organ abnormalities in school children and neonates in Taipei area from March 1987 to December 1990. Fetal craniofacial malformations were identified sonographically in 13 cases. Holoprosencephaly and median cleft syndrome were the most frequent findings. Ultrasound examination was performed in 90 patients with varying bowel pathology. Ultrasound reliably demonstrated thickening of the bowel. In addition, the pattern of abnormality seen in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis was different, and corresponded to the pathological changes seen in these disease processes. The pattern of bowel abnormality seen in other bowel diseases with an inflammatory aetiology generally corresponded to either the Crohn's or ulcerative colitic pattern. Ultrasonic luminescence of blood plasma was studied in 428 cases of cancer, precancer and non-tumor diseases of the stomach and other viscera.
