AIM: The authors aim to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of abdominal ultrasonography in 183 in-patients (113 females--70 males), aged between 3 and 78 years old, in the General Surgery department of Pugliese Hospital in Catanzaro, for abdominal pain and possible acute appendicitis, using a retrospective study. High-resolution thyroid and parathyroid ultrasonography can play an integral part in the diagnosis and management of patients with clinically undifferentiated cervical masses, thyroid carcinomas or adenomas, and primary parathyroid hyperplasia or neoplasia. Because the study is inexpensive, noninvasive, and easily performed, ultrasonography can be performed as a screening test early in the evaluation of a patient, and ultrasound findings can corroborate the results of other diagnostic procedures, leading to a more accurate diagnosis.

Fourteen patients undergoing total knee replacement for the arthritic conditions of the knee were evaluated by ultrasonography (USG) prior to surgery. USG findings (synovium, fluid, femoral cartilage, cyst and loose bodies) were compared with surgical findings. USG and surgical findings matched for synovial pathology in 57%, for presence fluid in 71% and for cartilage damage in 45%. Loose bodies and cyst present in one patient was not picked up by USG. Baker's cyst was detected in one patient.

The results of three years of diagnostic imaging of the breast were evaluated retrospectively, with special attention to the influence of ultrasonography. In 5245 mammographic investigations, 1841 supplementary ultrasonograms were considered necessary (35%). Malignancy of the breast was diagnosed in 250 cases. Twenty-five patients with scrotal hernia and hydrocele were studied. The testicular sizes of the patients were measured by using ultrasonography and the sliding caliper was used for calculations during surgery. The actual testicular volumes and those obtained by ultrasonography were not statistically different (p > 0.05). It is suggested that ultrasonography may be an alternative to orchidometers.

We report the importance of ultrasound in 5 cases of neuropathies caused by popliteal compression of the peroneal nerve. The ultrasound is helpful for the indication of operative decompression. The ultrasound is a proper diagnostic method if sciatica could not be excluded. Unfortunately, not every compression can be evaluated by this method alone.

A sonographically demonstrated vermicular structure in the region of the gall bladder was suspected to be an ascaris, which is to find in the biliary system occasionally. The paper is concerned with analysis of the results of sonography (by the grey scale), used for investigation of 83 cryptorchid patients. There were 106 undescended testes, of them 54 were not determined by palpation. All the patients were operated upon. Sonographic imaging of the intra-abdominal testis was obtained in 3 cases only.
