PURPOSE: Chronic urinary catheters induce histological changes in the bladder with time. The exact etiology of these changes is postulated to arise from inflammation and local tissue response. We elucidate the incidence of nonmalignant histological change in bladder biopsies of patients with chronic indwelling urinary catheters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: During 7 years 208 spinal cord injured patients underwent bladder biopsies as part of a surveillance program for vesical malignancy. All patients had chronic (more than 8.5 years) indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheters as definitive managem

Objective. Bladder cancer is a common malignant urinary carcinoma, with muscle-invasive and non-muscle-invasive as its two major subtypes. This paper aims to achieve automated bladder cancer invasiveness localization and classification based on MRI.Approach. Different from previous efforts that segment bladder wall and tumor, we propose a novel end-to-end multi-scale multi-task spatial feature encoder network (MM-SFENet) for locating and classifying bladder cancer, according to the classification criteria of the spatial relationship between the tumor and bladder wall. First, we built a backbon

BACKGROUND: Hemangioma of the urinary bladder is a rare benign tumor. Although benign, their presenting symptoms are alarming for both patients and doctors, and their rarity makes them challenging to correctly diagnosis and treat. This review paper summarizes current knowledge about hemangioma of the urinary bladder, treatment options, and follow-up modalities.
SUMMARY: After the kidney, the bladder is the second most common location of hemangiomas in the urinary tract. There is painless gross hematuria on clinical presentation once the lesion has eroded the urothelium. Magnetic resonance ima

Radical cystectomy (RC) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is an extensive and morbid operation, often associated with permanent alteration of body image and disability. Combined with the aggressive malignant potential of MIBC and considerable risk of complications, it poses a serious threat to the psychological well-being of patients. Educational deficiencies causing uncertainty and confusion aggravate surgery-related anxiety and may lead to depression along with further social disability. We conceived a preoperative supportive program named "Cystocare" held by urologists, psychologist

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of blue-light cystoscopy (BLC) in detecting invasive tumours that were not visible on white-light cystoscopy (WLC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using the multi-institutional Cysview registry database, patients who had at least one white-light negative (WL-)/blue-light positive (BL+) lesion with invasive pathology (≥T1) as highest stage tumour were identified. All WL-/BL+ lesions and all invasive tumours in the database were used as denominators. Relevant baseline and outcome data were collected.
RESULTS: Of the 3514 lesions (1257 unique patients), 818 (23.2%) lesio

Leiomyoma of the urinary bladder is a rare bladder tumour, which is benign in nature. On presentation, it resembles urothelial cancer but it has an excellent prognosis. We reported two cases of urinary bladder leiomyoma. Both the patients presented with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and the patient in the second case also had painless haematuria. Bladder mass was detected initially on ultrasound and confirmed on contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Transurethral resection of bladder tumour was performed in both cases and no recurrence was found on initial follow-up. But the second

Tumor-like lesions of the urinary bladder are reviewed emphasizing those that are most diagnostically challenging for the pathologist and may result in serious errors in patient care if misinterpreted. The first category considered, pseudocarcinomatous proliferations, represents an area of bladder pathology only recently appreciated as being particularly treacherous because of the extent to which irregular islands of benign epithelial cells may seemingly penetrate the lamina propria and cause confusion with carcinoma. Somewhat orderly proliferations of this type have been known for years, von

Bladder paraganglioma is a rare neuroendocrine neoplasm, either functional or non-functional, arising from the urinary bladder. Functional variants present with catecholamine-related symptoms, while non-functional variants pose diagnostic challenges, mimicking urothelial carcinoma. Misdiagnosis risks underscore the importance of accurate identification for appropriate patient management. In this case, a 52-year-old man, diagnosed incidentally with hypertension and reported occasional post-micturition tachycardia, underwent abdominal ultrasound for known hepatic cyst follow-up, revealing an ova

We present a retrospective review of 30 patients who developed upper urinary tract tumors (UUTT) after having been diagnosed and treated for a bladder neoplasm. The mean patient age was 63 years (range 54-72). An average of 4.8 (range 1-10) transurethral resections (TUR) had been performed for bladder cancer prior to the appearance of UUTT. The length of time elapsed between the initial bladder TUR and the subsequent diagnosis of UUTT was variable, with increased incidence in the first 24-72 months (63.3% of the cases). In 21 cases (70%) the bladder tumor was multiple and in 28 (93.3%) the tum

Pseudovascular adenoid squamous cell carcinoma (PASCC) is an uncommon histological variant of squamous cell carcinoma that can mimic vascular neoplasms, particularly angiosarcoma, in its morphologic characteristics. PASCC has been reported in the head and neck, as well as in the other organs such as the breast, lungs, urinary bladder, vulva, and uterine cervix. Only two cases of PASCC arising from the upper aerodigestive tract have been reported so far. We report a case of PASCC of oral cavity in a 40-year-old man, which mimicked an angiosarcoma initially. Immunohistochemical analysis led to a

Retroperitoneal benign lipomas are extremely rare and represent about 2.9% of all primary retroperitoneal tumors. About 80% of the tumors in the retroperitoneal cavities are malignant neoplasms. We experienced a case of a retroperitoneal lipoma simulating an ovarian mature cystic teratoma. A diagnosis was correctly made by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to surgery, and a total tumorectomy was performed. The retroperitoneal lipoma was recognized to have arisen from the urinary bladder. Histological sections revealed a tumor consisting of typical adipose cells without atypia. These types

A digital videofluoroscopic unit was employed to evaluate 42 female patients with urinary stress incontinence, cystocele or endometrial neoplasms, using either voiding cystourethrography or colpo-cysto-urethrorectography (CCURG), with or without urethral metallic bead chain. The digital subtraction technique allowed the direct visualization (on a single frame) of the lowering of both bladder base and other pelvic structures, and of the modification of urethral angles during Valsalva and micturition. The demonstration of contrasted urethra during micturition and Valsalva in incontinent patients

We report on a case of a healthy male patient who was referred to Urology for recurrent persistent urinary tract infections. Investigation revealed a large intraabdominal inflammatory collection abutting the cecum and bladder suspicious for ruptured appendicitis and colovesical fistula. He was taken to the operating room for exploratory laparotomy with General Surgery and Urology and found to have a ruptured appendix secondary to mucinous appendiceal neoplasm with invasion into the cecum and the bladder wall. He then underwent systemic chemotherapy followed by hyperthermic intraperitoneal chem

PURPOSE: Malignant ureteral obstruction is generally associated with a poor disease prognosis; therefore, managing these cases is challenging. We describe our experience in treating malignant ureteral obstruction with urinary diversion and the impact of these procedures on the indication for new antineoplastic therapy and survival.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients with advanced cancer associated with malignant ureteral obstruction who underwent urinary diversion at three tertiary institutions between January 2013 and July 2022.
RESULTS: This study inclu
