PURPOSE: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common neoplasm as well as the main cause of bladder outlet obstruction in men. It may progress to involve a risk of urinary retention. We investigated the effects of acute urinary retention on renal function.

There are many causes of acute urinary retention. Reported here is a case of one of the more rare causes: herpes zoster. Fewer than 70 cases have been reported in the literature since 1890. In the present clinical environment where many patients are immunocompromised, reports of herpes zoster and its sequelae are no longer thought of as anecdotal. An 8-year-old boy presented with dysuria and acute retention of urine. Rectal examination showed a hard mass arising from the prostate. CT scan of the pelvis confirmed the presence of a large prostatic tumor causing bladder outflow obstruction. A provisional diagnosis of pelvic sarcoma was initially made. Biopsy of the tumor mass however, revealed non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of T-cell type. The tumor showed very good response to chemotherapy and the urinary obstruction significantly improved with a week after starting therapy.

Ureteral calculi and urinary retention are common problems encountered by the urologist. However, they rarely occur concomitantly. Herein, we describe a case of a 40-year-old female patient who developed urinary retention as a result of ureteral stone disease. We have investigated the value of intermittent catheterization in the management of post-operative urinary retention occurring in elderly women after operative fixation of lower limb fracture. Eleven patients, aged 70-86, underwent intermittent catheterization two or three times daily for between 9 and 40 days as inpatients, and one patient continued intermittent self-catheterization at home for 3 months after discharge. Micturition difficulties and urinary retention are common complications after abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Adrenergic receptors are located in the bladder neck and proximal urethra, and blocking these receptors with alpha-blockers such as phenoxybenzamine (Dibenzyline) may improve micturition and prevent postoperative urinary retention. IMPORTANCE: Urethral Bulkamid is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved nonsurgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence and stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence due to intrinsic sphincter deficiency. This procedure is commonly performed in the operating room (OR). Incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare disease process where the retroflexed uterus becomes trapped within the pelvis preventing normal pregnancy development. IGU's presenting chief complaints are common complaints that can occur in a normal pregnancy. It has a high delayed diagnosis rate, and a high morbidity and mortality to the pregnancy and to the pregnant patient. It is important for emergency medicine physicians to recognize this diagnosis, appropriately treat the acute complications and ensure follow up with our obstetrics colleagues.

Approximately 10% of hospitalized patients in internal medicine will require urinary catheterization, and in 20% of cases, this procedure is justified by acute urinary retention. Labial fusion or labial adhesion can rarely be encountered postmenopausal and may be diagnosed in advanced stages especially in sexually inactive women.
