The risk of intra-amniotic infection, inflammation and histologic chorioamnionitis in term pregnant women with intact membranes and labor.

OBJECTIVE: A previous study has demonstrated that term labor is associated with an increased risk of microbial invasion of the amniotic cavi … determined. Patients were divided into five groups according to the absence or presence of regular uterine contractions and the degree of cervical dilatation. Intra-amniotic inflammation was defined as an AF WBC ≥ 19/mm(3). Histologic chorioamnionitis was defined as the presence of acute inflammatory changes in the extra-placental membranes or the chorionic plate of …

It has been suggested that the uterotonic action of OT may be … ent uterotonic doses of OT, AT and MC had different effects on uterine PG release. OT and AT caused uterine contractions and PG release, whereas MC caused contractions but no PG release. 2) OT produced a dose-dependent uterotonic responses. However, there was no proportional relationship and the rate of PG release. 3) In uterine homogenates, which lack the functional …

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris [Lamiaceae]) Leaves Inhibit Contraction of the Nonpregnant Mouse Uterus.

Dysmenorrhea is painful menstrual periods, which affects 25% of women within reproductive age and has a prevalence of 67.2-90.0%. Current treatment has several adverse effects and can be ineffective once the pain is initiated. Thymus vulgaris traditionally used for pain management was investigated in this study for its activity on uterine contraction in the nonpregnant uterus, as a parameter for dysmenorrhea. The dried leaves of T. vulgaris were macerated in water, and the resulting aqueous extract was investigated on the isolated mouse uterus. Parameters investigated included spontaneous cont…

Uteroplacental Responses to Physiological Challenges Throughout Pregnancy Using MRI.

BACKGROUND: Placental MRI has shown T2* decreases during contractions and increases during maternal hyperoxia. However, how contraction-induced placental oxygenation and deformation relate to uterine deformation and differ from hyperoxia-induced responses remains unknown. PURPOSE: To quantify placental T2* and deformation changes during spontaneous non-labor uterine contractions and maternal hyperoxia, testing the hypothesis that contractions produce mechanically mediated placental responses distinct from hyperoxia. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Forty-nine MRI datasets from 46 preg…

Response of human uterine arteries to local anesthetics.

The in vitro effects of local anesthetics and norepinephrine upon strips of early gestation and term pregnancy uterine arteries were studied in eight cases. In another case, the effect upon uterine veins was studied with a standard organ bath used to record isometric contractions. Histologic preparations were made to verify the type of vessel studied. An artery obtained from an eight-week gestation did not respond to either lidocaine or mepivacaine. All other arterial specimens (radial and helicoidal strips) responded with slow, rising, strong contractions to diluted concentrations of both of

Myometrial activity and endometrial blood flow in an ectopic pregnancy.

Myometrial activity and endometrial blood flow were recorded in a patient with uterine haemorrhage and lower abdominal pain, who turned out to have a tubal pregnancy. The uterine contractions had an amplitude sometimes exceeding 400 mmHg and a duration up to 3.5 min. Thus, strong uterine contractions can appear during pregnancy without the presence of a gestational sac within the uterus. This is contrary to the assumption that processes in the foetal membranes initiate the sequence of events leading to abortion or labour.

Spatial analysis of uterine EMG signals: evidence of increased in synchronization with term.

Evaluation of synchronization between signals can give new insights into the functioning of the related systems. Methods that can detect synchronization or coupling between signals can be divided two types: linear and non linear methods. In this paper we use the non linear correlation coefficient (h(2)) to show the difference in synchronization between efficient uterine contractions during labor and normal physiological contractions during pregnancy, in uterine activity bursts recorded at different places on the pregnant abdomen. Our interest in the non linear correlation coefficient is based …

Pregnancy is associated with altered response to neuropeptide Y in uterine artery.

Pregnancy is associated with a significant increase in uterine blood flow which contributes to optimal fetal development. Although neuropeptide Y (NPY) is considered to be an important regulator of uterine blood flow, it is not known whether: (i) products from the vascular endothelium modulate NPY action in the uterine artery; (ii) pregnancy changes the responsiveness of the uterine artery to NPY, or (iii) NPY interacts with noradrenaline and acetylcholine on the uterine artery, with pregnancy regulating this possible interaction. In the present study, NPY induced a concentration-dependent con

Propagation of electrical activity in uterine muscle during pregnancy: a review.

The uterine muscle (the myometrium) plays its most evident role during pregnancy, when quiescence is required for adequate nourishment and d … rine contractility during labour remains suboptimal. In an effort to improve clinical management of uterine contractions, research has focused on understanding the propagation properties of the electrical activity of the uterus. Different perspectives have been undertaken, from animal and in vitro experiments up to clinical studies and dedicated methods for non-invas …

Human Myometrial Contractility Assays.

Traditional contractility assays using an organ bath setup consist of several chambers (or baths) perfused with temperature-controlled, oxygenated physiological saline. Strips or rings of tissue (usually smooth or cardiac muscle) are mounted within the organ bath between a fixed hook and an isometric force transducer. The contraction force is recorded by the transducer and different parameters of contraction are analyzed. Different experimental protocols can be performed to investigate the effect of drugs and reagents on tissue contractility to investigate tissue physiology or determine the in

Mechanism of Relaxation Via TASK-2 Channels in Uterine Circular Muscle of Mouse.

Plasma pH can be altered during pregnancy and at labor. Membrane excitability of smooth muscle including uterine muscle is suppressed by the activation of K(+) channels. Because contractility of uterine muscle is regulated by extracellular pH and humoral factors, K(+) conductance could be connected to factors regulating uterine contractility during pregnancy. Here, we showed that TASK-2 inhibitors such as quinidine, lidocaine, and extracellular acidosis produced contraction in uterine circular muscle of mouse. Furthermore, contractility was significantly increased in pregnant uterine circular

Alternating nitroglycerin and syntocinon to facilitate uterine exploration and removal of an adherent placenta.

Nitroglycerin (NTG) has been demonstrated to provide uterine relaxation in the management of various obstetric complications. A 32-yr-old woman presented 40 min postpartum for manual removal of a retained placenta. Repeated, alternating doses of NTG 250 micrograms and syntocinon (SYN) 10U iv were used over 15 min to produce periods of uterine relaxation and contraction respectively for uterine exploration. Multiple attempts to extract the placenta failed and a diagnosis of placenta accreta was made. There were no major side effects from this combination of drugs apart from a transient 20% decr
