BACKGROUND: Idiopathic paediatric uveitis (IPU) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis associated uveitis (JIA-U) are the two most common entities in paediatric uveitis. This study addressed the possible association of IPU and JIA-U with genes that had been shown earlier to be associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
METHODS: We carried out a case-control association study involving 286 IPU, 134 JIA-U patients and 743 healthy individuals. A total of 84 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 60 genes were selected for this study. The MassARRAY platform and iPLEX Gold Genotyping A…

The tubulo-interstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome, first described in 1975, is a rare disease most probably of autoimmune origin that is characterized by unilateral or bilateral uveitis and tubulointerstitial nephritis. Most patients are adolescents and it is sometimes associated with other autoimmune diseases, such as spondyloarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and hyperthyroidosis. This article reports the case of a 43-year-old female patient who presented with refractory recurrent bilateral uveitis despite therapy with high doses of corticosteroids in combination with cyclosporin. W…

So far 34 cases of idiopathic acute tubulo-interstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU syndrome) have been reported by nephrologists. The patients have mainly been girls and only female adults. The authors describe a 53-year-old woman with this nosological entity, presenting with a granulomatous anterior uveitis and chronic course of nephritis. This is the first such case reported. All other cases described in the literature are compared and an attempt is made to locate the immune deficiency.

Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) represents an indispensable imaging modality for the precise evaluation and management of posterior uveitis by allowing to explore the choroidal compartment. ICGA leverages near-infrared fluorescence and extensive protein binding to provide an unhindered, dynamic assessment of the choriocapillaris and choroidal stroma. This review explores the principles, standard protocols, and clinical applications of ICGA in posterior uveitis. It details ICGA's critical role in classifying and diagnosing primary inflammatory choriocapillaropathies, like multiple evanesce…

Paediatric neoplastic uveitis masquerade syndrome (UMS) is a rare but serious condition in which intraocular malignancies mimic inflammatory uveitis. Children may present with symptoms of intraocular inflammation such as redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. The diagnostic challenge is compounded by the difficulty of examining younger patients and the absence of systemic warning signs. Accurate diagnosis is essential because the therapies for uveitis and ocular neoplasms vary fundamentally, and delayed recognition can be life-threatening.Although the most frequent neoplastic ma…

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in childhood, and is associated with uveitis in up to 20-25% of cases. Typically, the uveitis is chronic, asymptomatic, non-granulomatous and anterior. For this reason, screening for uveitis is recommended to identify uveitis early and allow treatment to prevent sight-threatening complications. The management of JIA associated uveitis requires a multidisciplinary approach and a close collaboration between paediatric rheumatologist and ophthalmologist. Starting the appropriate treatment to control uveitis activity …

Intermediate uveitis (IU) in an intraocular inflammation that predominantly affects the vitreous. It typically manifests as chronic low-grade inflammation, mainly affecting children and young adults. Uncontrolled chronic intraocular inflammation carries a high risk of visual loss. IU, despite being a low-grade inflammation, is among the sight-threatening conditions owing to its intrinsically-associated vision-robbing ocular complications. It can cause early and late-onset ocular complications affecting the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. 40-60% of the patients who suffer from IU wi…

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that involves the eyes in 10-55% of cases, sometimes without systemic involvement. All eye structures can be affected, but uveitis is the most common ocular manifestation and causes vision loss. The typical ophthalmological appearance of these uveitis is granulomatous (in cases with anterior involvement), which are usually bilateral and with synechiae. Posterior involvement includes vitritis, vasculitis and choroidal lesions. Tuberculosis is a classic differential diagnosis to be wary of, especially in people who have spent time in endemic areas. The diag…

Uveitis is one of the most common ocular complications in people living with the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and can be classified into HIV-induced uveitis, co-infection related uveitis, immune recovery uveitis, and drug-induced uveitis. The introduction of antiretroviral therapy has considerably changed the incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of different types of HIV-related uveitis. Furthermore, the specific immune condition of patients infected with HIV makes diagnosing HIV-related uveitis difficult. Recent studies have focused on the growing prevalence of syphilis/tuberculosis co-i…

SIGNIFICANCE: Tattoo-associated uveitis describes simultaneous tattoo inflammation and uveitis. Multiple cases exist in the literature related to systemic sarcoidosis or a delayed hypersensitivity reaction; however, there is no consensus on etiology. Clinicians should consider new tattoos as an associated factor for patients presenting with a new uveitis.
PURPOSE: In this retrospective review case series, two African American men with simultaneous tattoo inflammation and bilateral anterior uveitis were examined. Systemic sarcoidosis was suspected as the leading differential in both cases; how…

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome in children is an uncommon, underreported condition. Onset of renal and ocular symptoms is often not simultaneous with nephritis which may precede uveitis by several months. A variable treatment response and a propensity for relapse characterize the syndrome. This is a case report of a previously healthy 14-year-old boy with TINU syndrome, emphasizing the need for long-term interdisciplinary treatment and monitoring. Also, the importance of repetitive screening of patients with uveitis for renal disease and ophthalmological evaluation of…
