The intake of vitamins and minerals by the elderly at home.

In 403 elderly people residing in their own homes a dietary interview was undertaken with special reference to the intakes of vitamins and minerals. The group was randomly selected. The data were compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowances, Joint Nordic Recommendations and the absolute minimal necessary amounts. Intakes of folacin was low in 100% of the interviewed, intakes of cholecalciferol was low in 62% and in 83% intakes of pyridoxine was low as compared to the recommendations. The majority had sufficient amounts of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, retinol and cobalamin from the …

Deficiency of fat-soluble vitamins in treated patients with pancreatic insufficiency.

Deficiency of fat-soluble vitamins (A,D,E, and K) was evaluated in 15 patients with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency secondary to chronic alcoholic pancreatitis. Mild to moderate steatorrhea was present in all patients despite oral pancreatic enzyme therapy for 27 +/- 4 months (mean +/- SE). Deficiency of a single fat-soluble vitamin was seen in six patients and deficiency of two fat-soluble vitamins was seen in two patients. One patient was deficient in three fat-soluble vitamins. Deficiency of vitamins A and E was most frequent. Treatment with specific vitamin supplements resulted in correc…

Pilot study of d-penicillamine, vitamins and minerals in multiple sclerosis.

A pilot study of the effect of D-penicillamine in multiple sclerosis (MS) was undertaken because of D-penicillamine's activity against RNA neurotropic viruses, because it is effective against the auto-immune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and because both viruses and autoimmunity have been implicated in multiple sclerosis. We have treated 16 patients with advanced MS, nine on full doses (2-2.25 grams/day) and seven whose treatment was permanently stopped for reasons other than adverse reactions. There has been some improvement in most of those whose treatment was not withdrawn, and no change o

B vitamins and magnetic resonance imaging-detected ischemic brain lesions in patients with recent transient ischemic attack or stroke: the VITAmins TO Prevent Stroke (VITATOPS) MRI-substudy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Elevated concentrations of homocysteine are associated with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). B-vitamin supplementation with folate and vitamins B12 and B6 reduces homocysteine concentrations. In a substudy of the VITAmins TO Prevent Stroke (VITATOPS) trial, we assessed the hypothesis that the addition of once-daily supplements of B vitamins would reduce the progression of CSVD-related brain lesions. METHODS: A total of 359 patients with recent stroke or transient ischemic attack, who were randomly allocated to double-blind treatment with placebo or b vitamins, und…

Homocysteine and related B-vitamins throughout our International Conferences: a historical perspective.

In this invited keynote review, I reflect on biochemical, clinical, and epidemiological evidence on the role of folate and vitamin B12 in one-carbon metabolism and their relationship with homocysteine, integrating over five decades of research. One-carbon metabolism represents a central biochemical network linking folate-dependent one-carbon transfer reactions with vitamin B12-dependent remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. Disruptions in this pathway result in elevated homocysteine concentrations and impaired methylation capacity, providing a mechanistic link between micronutrient stat

The Role of Vitamins A, D, and E in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.

The aim of this review was to examine the association between diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and deficiency of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E. Vitamins A, D, and E are involved in crucial neuroprotective mechanisms through the regulation of gene expression and antioxidant activity. Vitamin A appears to actively regulate the expression of nerve growth factor (NGF), essential for the development, survival, and regeneration of peripheral neurons. Vitamin D exhibits immunomodulatory effects, reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and enhances neuroplasticity. Similarly, vita…

Serum vitamins and Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in children: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Immunodeficiency is a common precipitating factor for Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP). Vitamins are essential for enhancing immune function and mitigating systemic inflammation. However, the relationship between various vitamins, particularly B vitamins, and MPP in children remains underexplored. This study aims to assess the nutritional status of multiple vitamins in children with MPP and their relationship to the condition. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University. A total of 135 children…

Lower water-soluble vitamins and higher homocysteine are associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Evidence of the effects of water-soluble vitamins (e.g., B vitamins, vitamin C, and total folate) on cognitive function in patients with neurodegenerative diseases is mixed. Furthermore, the relationships among homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism, water-soluble vitamins, and cognitive impairment remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of the levels of water-soluble vitamins [e.g., vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5mTHF), B12, and C and total folate] and Hcy in dementia progression in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. In this retrospective cohort stud…

Understanding the Effect of B Vitamins on Gut Microbiota: A Comprehensive Review.

The gut microbiota has important effects on health maintenance, protection against pathogens, modulation of the immune system, and synthesis of vitamins, such as certain B vitamins. Many factors influence the gut microbiome, with diet and micronutrients being of particular interest. B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins that are ingested with food and play a role as cofactors in many metabolic processes in the body. B vitamins are thought to play an active role in the health and functionality of the gut microbiota. B vitamins are both sources for the microbiota and are produced by the gut micr…

The Efficacy of Vitamins in the Prevention and Treatment of Cardiovascular Disease.

Vitamins are known to affect the regulation of several biochemical and metabolic pathways that influence cellular function. Adequate amounts of both hydrophilic and lipophilic vitamins are required for maintaining normal cardiac and vascular function, but their deficiencies can contribute to cardiovascular abnormalities. In this regard, a deficiency in the lipophilic vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, and E, as well as in the hydrophilic vitamins, such as vitamin C and B, has been associated with suboptimal cardiovascular function, whereas additional intakes have been suggested to reduce the ris…
