Volatile organic compounds as non-destructive biomarkers for postharvest quality and disease detection in vegetables.

High perishability of vegetables associated with rapid physiological deterioration and microbial spoilage results in 30-50% post-harvest losses globally. In earlier days, post-harvest diseases were detected by visual inspection, microbial culturing, and molecular assays. These destructive methods are time-consuming and unsuitable for real-time monitoring. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have emerged as promising non-destructive biomarkers enhanced for early detection of quality deterioration and pathogen attack, often before visible symptoms appear. This review provides a thorough overview o…

Total cancer risk estimates from measured concentrations of volatile organic compounds in industrialized southeastern Louisiana.

Communities in southeastern Louisiana are subject to disproportionate environmental health burdens, including elevated risk for cancer, from emissions of industrial hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). However, there are few ambient measurements (or none) of various HAPs in the heavily industrialized corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans (BR-NO). We measured 17 carcinogenic volatile organic compounds using fast-response in situ instrumentation aboard a mobile laboratory. Using spatially resolved concentrations, we estimate cancer risk in 15 census tracts along an 81 km-long stretch of the B…

Cumulative environmental exposures and metabolic syndrome: A study of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), a condition affecting over one-third of the U.S. population, heightens the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and premature mortality. While individual links between heavy metals (HM), volatile organic compounds (VOC), and MetS have been established, the impact when these environmental toxins are combined remains unclear and unexplored. This study investigates how simultaneous exposure to HMs and VOCs influences the risk of MetS. METHODS: Weighted Quantile Sum regression and Bayesian kernel Machine Regression were performed on data from 660…

Tuning phosphorene and MoS2 2D materials for detecting volatile organic compounds associated with respiratory diseases.

Efficient identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is essential for the rapid diagnostication of respiratory diseases. By detecting specific biomarkers associated with different pathologies one may distinguish between tuberculosis, nosocomial pneumonia, Aspergillus fumigatus, influenza and SARS-CoV-2 virus infections. Phosphorene and MoS2 are potential candidates from the class of 2D graphene-like materials, which can be used as active layers for sensing elements. However, as the target molecules poorly adhere to the pristine layers, binding centers are created by introducing substi…

Volatile Organic Compounds in Cellular Headspace after Hyperbaric Oxygen Exposure: An In Vitro Pilot Study.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) might be associated with pulmonary oxygen toxicity (POT). This pilot study aims to identify VOCs linked to oxidative stress employing an in vitro model of alveolar basal epithelial cells exposed to hyperbaric and hyperoxic conditions. In addition, the feasibility of this in vitro model for POT biomarker research was evaluated. The hyperbaric exposure protocol, similar to the U.S. Navy Treatment Table 6, was conducted on human alveolar basal epithelial cells, and the headspace VOCs were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Three compounds (nonan…

Microplastics and volatile organic compounds released from face masks after disinfection: Layers and materials differences.

Effective disinfection methods are critical for ensuring the reusability of masks, yet these methods may inadvertently introduce health concerns associated with microplastics (MPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study investigated the impact of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) bleaching on mask filter layers composed of four distinct materials. Our results revealed that UVGI induced more pronounced damage compared to bleaching, leading to the significant release of both MPs and VOCs. After UVGI treatment at conventional disinfection doses, …

Mathematical modeling and machine learning-based optimization for enhancing biofiltration efficiency of volatile organic compounds.

Biofiltration is a method of pollution management that utilizes a bioreactor containing live material to absorb and destroy pollutants biologically. In this paper, we investigate mathematical models of biofiltration for mixing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for instance hydrophilic (methanol) and hydrophobic ( α -pinene). The system of nonlinear diffusion equations describes the Michaelis-Menten kinetics of the enzymic chemical reaction. These models represent the chemical oxidation in the gas phase and mass transmission within the air-biofilm junction. Furthermore, for the numerical study …

Development of a safety analysis method for volatile organic compounds using 2-phenoxyethanol as solvent.

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are usually sampled using active carbon samplers and subsequently analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to assess the exposure risk to workers. Therefore, selection of a suitable solvent for VOC extraction is crucial. However, reports on the use of 2-phenoxyethanol-known for its low vapor pressure and low toxicity-as a solvent for extracting VOCs from activated carbon are lacking. Here, we show that 2-phenoxyethanol is a suitable alternative solvent with low toxicity and can extract a wide variety of VOCs without overlapping with t…
