Camels, the one-humped Camelus dromedarius and the two-humped Camelus bactrianus, are uniquely adapted livestock species to the arid and semi-arid regions. Their distinctive behavioral and physiological adaptations enable them to maintain productivity in these challenging ecosystems, characterized by prolonged heat stress, limited feed resources, and water scarcity. Despite these advantages and their vital role in rural livelihoods, food security and the resilience of dryland ecosystems, the potential contribution of camel production systems to the circular bioeconomy has not been comprehensiv

This study investigates the production and biochemical characterization of laccase from the white-rot fungus Irpex cf. latemarginatus using agro-industrial waste under solid-state fermentation. Cocoa husk waste was identified as the most suitable substrate, and sterile tap water as the optimal moisture-adjusting agent, yielding 4.4 U L-1 of laccase activity. Box-Behnken optimization approach revealed that supplementation with 30% cocoa bean shell significantly enhanced enzyme production, resulting in a 12.5-fold increase and a maximum activity of approximately 55 U L-1. The crude enzyme prepar

This study explores the production of bioplastic films from sugar cane bagasse, wood pulp waste, and boxboard waste using a three-step, sustainable process. First, cellulose was extracted from the biomass through a deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment system composed of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and oxalic acid (ChCl-EG-OA), which effectively removed lignin and enabled an efficient alkaline treatment for hemicellulose removal. Among the biomass sources, sugar cane bagasse yielded the highest cellulose content (72.86%), followed by wood pulp waste (43.82%) and boxboard waste (38.81

Simultaneous productions of high-purity CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and amorphous nanosized SiO2-rich (silica-rich) gel from waste concrete powder remain quite challenging, and thus the high-value added utilization of waste concrete powder is significantly limited. A novel technology involving a combination of alkaline treatment and carbonation, has been proposed for the greatly enhanced utilization of waste concrete powder. Through alkaline treatment, CaCO3 and SiO2-rich gel formed during carbonation of concrete powder were transformed into Ca(OH)2 (calcium hydroxide) and Na2SiO3 (sodium metasi

Herein, this work targets to employ the blended fruit wastes including rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) peel and durian (Durio zibethinus) seed as a promising precursor to produce activated carbon (RPDSAC). The generation of RPDSAC was accomplished through a rapid and practical procedure (microwave-ZnCl2 activation). To evaluate the adsorptive capabilities of RPDSAC, its efficacy in eliminating methylene blue (MB), a simulated cationic dye, was measured. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) was utilized to optimize the crucial adsorption parameters, namely A: RPDSAC dose (0.02-01 g/100 mL), B: pH (4-10)

Anaerobic fermentation is an efficient method to extract phosphorus from excess sludge, thereby facilitating its recovery and mitigating the phosphorus resource shortage. However, the prevalent metal-bound phosphorus species within sludge was difficult to release into the fermentation liquor. To address this, this study evaluated the enhanced phosphorus release performance from sludge containing iron-phosphorus compounds (Fe-P) via co-fermenting it with agriculture wastes. Specifically, protein-rich feather (Feather Group) and polysaccharide-rich tea residue (Tea Group) was respectively dosed

This work first explored the feasibility and possible mechanisms of zero valent iron (ZVI) pretreatment on the generation of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) during thermophilic anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS). Results showed that ZVI enhanced the quantity of SCFAs. On Day 6, the SCFAs production reached 455.84 ± 47.88 mg COD/g VSS at 5 g/L of ZVI addition, which increased by 63.80 % relative to control. The presence of ZVI can effectively promote butyric-based fermentation. ZVI accelerated the destruction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and interior sludge ce

The treatment of contaminants from lignocellulosic biorefinery effluent has recently been identified as a unique challenge. This study focuses on removing phenolic contaminants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from lignocellulosic biorefinery wastewater (BRW) applying a laccase-assisted approach. Cassava waste was used as a substrate to produce the maximum yield of laccase enzyme (3.9 U/g) from Pleurotus ostreatus. Among the different inducers supplemented, CuSO4 (0.5 mM) showed an eight-fold increase in enzyme production (30.8 U/g) after 240 h of incubation. The catalytic efficienc

The catalytic conversion of polyethylene (PE) into a C6-C8 BTX-rich fraction and a C9-C16 SAF-range hydrocarbon fraction provides a potential route for plastic-carbon valorization, where "SAF-range" refers to the aviation-fuel-relevant carbon-number range rather than to specification-compliant finished SAF. However, many reported PE-upcycling routes require elevated temperatures, external H2, noble-metal catalysts, or high catalyst-to-feed ratios. Herein, we report a rationally engineered bifunctional Cr-Zr/ZSM-5 catalyst that converts PE at 280 °C and 0.5 MPa into targeted products with a liq

The urgent need for effective food waste management, coupled with the scarcity of carbon sources for sewage treatment, highlights the potential of producing carbon sources from food waste as a mutually beneficial solution. This study investigated the production of carbon sources through anaerobic fermentation using the liquid phase of food waste three-phase separation. Compared with previous studies using raw food waste or mixed substrates, the liquid phase derived from three-phase separation is richer in soluble organic matter and has been pre-heated (80 °C), which facilitates subsequent ferm

Clandestine production of synthetic drugs like amphetamine generates tremendous amounts of chemical waste which may partly be disposed into the sewage system by the producers. Specific synthesis-related marker compounds present in the production waste thus enter wastewater after discharges. Hence, wastewater monitoring could be an additional tool for law enforcement agencies to localize clandestine laboratories that dispose production waste into the sewage system. For such a scenario, a programmable sampling unit may be useful, which can be installed in manholes to access the sewage line and w

The abundant availability of cockle shell waste and the potentially hazardous reuse of used palm oil highlight the need to develop more sustainable and value-added alternatives. This study aims to determine the optimal catalytic activity of a bifunctional catalyst in a one-pot reaction for converting used palm oil into biodiesel. The bifunctional catalysts were prepared by synthesizing CaO base catalysts derived from blood clam shell waste (Anadara granosa), followed by modification with citric acid using the impregnation method, resulting in an environmentally friendly CKS-CA catalyst. The CK

Food protein deficit has become a major issue worldwide, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Scientists are searching for a variety of less expensive solutions to this issue. One of these less expensive methods is to create single cell protein as a substrate from leftover fruit and vegetable waste, which is typically thrown away. In this regard, the fungal strain Aspergillus flavus (NRRL 21882) was used for the synthesis of SCP (single cell protein) from the waste of banana, potato, and pea. In this manner, 30 samples were collected from the whole substrate with a share of 10 samples eac
