Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) describes a series of morphologic and functional ocular changes in astronauts first reported by Mader and colleagues in 2011. SANS is currently clinically defined by the development of optic disc edema during prolonged exposure to the weightless (microgravity) environment, which currently occurs on International Space Station (ISS). However, as improvements in our understanding of the ocular changes emerge, the definition of SANS is expected to evolve. Other ocular SANS signs that arise during and after ISS missions include hyperopic shifts,

The present study was designed to evaluate the influence of antiorthostatic suspension, a ground-based modeling system employed to simulate certain aspects of weightlessness that occur during space flight, on the capacity of mice to resist infection with the facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. Female BDF1 mice were suspended by the tail in the orthostatic or antiorthostatic position and were infected with a sublethal dose of virulent L. monocytogenes at various times during the suspension. It was found that suspension did not influence the kinetics of bacterial

For a few years, more and more astronauts complain to endure space motion sickness during the two or three first days of their mission. This is due to the repetition of shifting and sudden head movements, which becomes possible by the increasing of volume of the new space stations. To avoid that payload specialists onboard be obliged to renounce to conduct planned experiments, it has been necessary to find effective solutions to detect by ground based tests the candidates sensitive to space motion sickness and perfect therapeutic means able to avoid unexpected arrival of these symptoms, and ev

Goldfish were flown in parabolic Keplerian trajectories in a KC-135 aircraft to assay both the effectiveness of piracetam as an anti-motion sickness drug and the effectiveness of state-dependent training during periods of oscillating gravity levels. Single-frame analyses of infrared films were performed for two classes of responses--roll rates in hypogravity or hypogravity orienting responses (LGR) and climbing responses in hypergravity or hypergravity orienting responses (HGR). In Experiment I, preflight training with a vestibular stressor facilitated suppression of LGR by the 10th parabola.

Many of the changes that accompany physical inactivity coincide with those that occur during aging. These changes are generally grouped under the term of 'disuse' (or "lack of use" or "inappropriately modulated stimulation"). Studies of long-term space travel have revealed that weightlessness in space also induces changes resembling those of aging and physical inactivity. The relationship between disuse (due to bed rest, insufficient exercise, or lack of gravity) and aging has some definite practical implications. As life expectancy is lenghtened in all populations worldwide, the number of eld

Beginning with the fourth flight of the Space Transport System (STS-4), objective measurements of inner ear function were conducted in near-zero G conditions in earth orbit. The problem of space motion sickness (SMS) was approached much like any disequilibrium problem encountered clinically. However, objective testing techniques had built-in limitations superimposed by the strict parameters inherent in each mission. An attempt was made to objectively characterize SMS, and to first ascertain whether the objective measurements indicated that this disorder was of peripheral or central origin. Ele

Spaceflight-related bone loss represents a critical health concern for astronauts undertaking prolonged space missions. This study investigated the mechanistic role of macrophage-derived exosomes in microgravity-induced bone loss using a simulated microgravity model. Phenotypic analysis of macrophages demonstrated that simulated microgravity promoted polarization towards the M2 phenotype and markedly suppressed the secretion of most pro-inflammatory cytokines. Exosomes were isolated and purified from macrophages cultured under normal gravity (1 g) and simulated microgravity (μg) conditions via

As a direct consequence of exposure to microgravity, astronauts experience a set of physiological changes which can have serious medical implications when they return to earth. Most immediate and significant are the headward shift of body fluids and the removal of gravitational loading from bone and muscles, which lead to progressive changes in the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems. Cardiovascular adaptations result in an increased incidence of orthostatic intolerance (fainting) following flight, decreased cardiac output, and reduced capacity for exercise. Changes in the musculoskelet

In a series of studies, we have examined the effects of exposure to simulated microgravity, varying states of vascular volume, and acute exercise on the function of the carotid-cardiac baroreflex in man. In the first study, exposure to simulated microgravity (6 degrees headdown bedrest) reduced the sensitivity and buffer capacity of the vagal baroreceptor-cardiac reflex mechanisms and this impaired baroreflex function was associated with orthostatic hypotension. Since the reduction in plasma volume during BR was not correlated with impaired baroreflex function, a second study was conducted whi

The current trend of individualized food items (nutrient content and flavor) can be particularly valuable to support people's health and well-being in isolated environments where access to fresh foods and diverse nutrition is difficult. At the same time, bioactive compounds and micronutrients can be employed to countermeasure any health hazards characteristic for the respective environment. Outer space is well-known as a hazardous environment due to microgravity, space radiation, and extreme living situation, whereas food monotony has led to insufficient caloric intake in the past. We are prop

During deep space exploration, astronauts are exposed to external environmental stressors, including microgravity and ionizing radiation. They also experience internal physiological disruptions, such as circadian rhythm dysregulation and sleep disturbance. Within this complex stress environment, functional alterations may occur in multiple organ systems, particularly the heart and brain. This review examines alterations in heart and brain function during spaceflight and explores their potential relationships with microgravity, circadian rhythm dysregulation, and sleep disturbance. Evidence fro

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged exposure to microgravity alters spinal biomechanics, increases disc herniation risk, and complicates perioperative care. With commercial and deep-space missions on the horizon, the need for in-orbit surgical capability has gained prominence as a safeguard for astronaut health.
METHODS: A narrative review of PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar through November 2024 identified human, animal, and in vitro studies addressing spinal physiology, pathology, or surgical feasibility in actual or simulated microgravity. Studies unrelated to the spine or lacking English full text

Gravity, the force that structures the cosmos, also shapes human physiology. It influences skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological systems, sustaining balance, blood circulation, and functional capacity. Unlike other senses, the brain lacks a dedicated gravity-sensing region and instead relies on a distributed vestibular network, graviception, to interpret gravitational cues. On Earth, gravity-driven blood pooling in the legs triggers compensatory responses that preserve cerebral perfusion. In microgravity, these mechanisms are altered, leading to fluid shifts toward

The immune system of astronauts might become weakened in the microgravity environment in space, and the dormant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the body might be reactivated, seriously affecting their work and safety. For working in orbit for the long term, there is currently no efficient and durable delivery system of general vaccines in a microgravity environment. Accordingly, based on the previous foundation, we designed, modified, and synthesized a biodegradable and biocompatible copolymer, polyethylene glycol-polysulfamethazine carbonate urethane (PEG-PSCU) that could be mainly adopted to

3D bioprinting has developed tremendously in the last couple of years and enables the fabrication of simple, as well as complex, tissue models. The international space agencies have recognized the unique opportunities of these technologies for manufacturing cell and tissue models for basic research in space, in particular for investigating the effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation on different types of human tissues. In addition, bioprinting is capable of producing clinically applicable tissue grafts, and its implementation in space therefore can support the autonomous medical treatment

INTRODUCTION: The advancement of human spaceflight has made urgent the need to develop medical imaging technology to ensure a high level of in-flight care. To date, only ultrasound has been used in spaceflight. Radiography has multiple advantages over ultrasound, including lower operator dependence, more rapid acquisition, typically higher spatial resolution, and characterization of tissue with acoustic impedance precluding ultrasound. This proof-of-concept work demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of performing human radiographs in microgravity.METHODS: Radiographs of a phantom and
