Climate-induced Arctic-boreal peatland fire and carbon loss in the 21st century.

Boreal peatlands are increasingly vulnerable to wildfires as climate change continues accelerating. Fires consume substantial quantities of organic soils and rapidly transfer large stocks of terrestrial carbon to the atmosphere. Herein, we quantify the minimum environmental temperature from -45 °C to 45 °C that allows the moist peat to smolder, as the fire threshold of peatlands. We then apply a typical vertical soil temperature profile to estimate the future depth of burn and carbon emissions from boreal peatland fires under the impact of global warming. If the boreal region continues warming…

Temporal turnover and fire severity shape postfire beetle (Coleoptera) diversity at a forest range edge.

In recent decades, wildfires have increased in frequency and severity, reshaping forest structure and biodiversity. Yet it remains unclear whether postfire insect assemblages are driven primarily by fire severity, vegetation structure, or broader temporal community turnover, particularly in fragmented range-edge forests. We investigated flight-active beetle (Coleoptera) assemblages 2 years after a 2022 wildfire in the Lost Pines region of Texas, an isolated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) forest at the species' western range margin. Using historical data from 2011, we evaluated temporal turnove…

Climate-amplified wildland-urban interface disasters create persistent internal metal mixtures associated with pulmonary impairment.

Wildland-urban interface (WUI) wildfires are increasingly important climate-related exposure events because they burn built infrastructure and can mobilize legacy contaminants in addition to generating smoke. Although the acute respiratory effects of wildfire smoke are well described, persistent internal metal mixtures and their association with pulmonary function after WUI disasters remain poorly characterized. Using the August 2023 Maui wildfires as a sentinel model, we evaluated 1,400 adults enrolled 6 to 18 mo after the disaster in a community-engaged cohort. We measured 24 urinary metals …

Exposure to Particulate Matter and Estimation of Volatile Organic Compounds across Wildland Firefighter Job Tasks.

Wildland firefighters are exposed to smoke-containing particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) while suppressing wildfires. From 2015 to 2017, the U.S. Forest Service conducted a field study collecting breathing zone measurements of PM4 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤4 μm) on wildland firefighters from different crew types and while performing various fire suppression tasks on wildfires. Emission ratios of VOC (parts per billion; ppb): PM1 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤1 μm; mg/m3) were calculated using data from a separate field study cond…

DopaShield: a bioinspired flame-retardant spray nanocoating for versatile surface protection.

As wildfires intensify due to climate change and expanding development in fire-prone areas of the world, there is a critical need for scalable, bioinspired flame-retardant technologies that can be applied across diverse substrates and environments. Here, we introduce DopaShield, a sprayable, bioinspired flame-retardant nanocoating composed of core-shell silica-polydopamine (SiO2@PDA) colloids. Applied via pneumatic spraying, DopaShield forms a conformal coating on flammable materials such as cotton and polyurethane (PU) foam without the need for curing or solvents. Upon flame exposure, it rapi…

Release of biogenic volatile organic compounds and physiological responses of two sub-tropical tree species to smoke derived from forest fire.

Forests emit a large amount of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in response to biotic and abiotic stress. Despite frequent occurrence of large forest fires in recent years, the impact of smoke stress derived from these forest fires on the emission of BVOCs is largely unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study were to quantify the amount and composition of BVOCs released by two sub-tropical tree species, Cunninghamia lanceolata and Schima superba, in response to exposure to smoke. Physiological responses and their relationship with BVOCs were also investigated. The results showed that s

Spatially explicit assessment of multihazard exposure in the Zagros forests of Iran: the role of canopy structure in the exposure component of forest vulnerability.

Mountain forests face increasing threats from interacting climatic, environmental, and socioecological stressors, yet most vulnerability assessments still use single-hazard approaches that overlook cumulative environmental risk. This limitation is especially important in Iran's Zagros forests, where climate change and human pressures are accelerating ecological consequences. We developed a spatially explicit multihazard exposure framework to quantify forest exposure to multiple environmental stressors and assess its relationship with canopy-cover structure. Nine environmental and socioecologic

Atmospheric stressors and kidney diseases.

The adverse effects of atmospheric conditions - including ambient air pollution from industry, wildfires and extreme atmospheric temperatures - on human health are well documented. However, their hazardous roles in kidney health have often been overlooked, despite the existence of plausible biological mechanisms for pathogenic effects. Emerging evidence from epidemiological studies indicates that exposures to ambient air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, ozone, wildfire smoke and extreme hot and cold temperatures may increase the risks of acute kidney in…

Developing nondestructive sensitive detection for smoke-exposure assessment in wine via advanced Raman spectroscopy.

Wildfire smoke has become an increasing problem due to climate change and global warming, and rapid smoke analysis is vital for the wine industry. This work demonstrates a new approach for determining volatile phenol (guaiacol) in wine via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). The results showed that several marker bands become particularly enhanced, enabling the detection of guaiacol at lower concentrations than spontaneous Raman. Aided by quantum calculations, band assignments help to elucidate key vibrational motions being enhanced.

Cascading disasters and mental health: The February 2021 winter storm and power crisis in Texas, USA.

In February 2021, the state of Texas and large parts of the US were affected by a severe cold air outbreak and winter weather event. This event resulted in large-scale power outages and cascading impacts, including limited access to potable water, multiple days without electricity, and large-scale infrastructure damage. Little is known about the mental health implications of these events, as most research has predominantly focused on the mental health effects of exposure to hurricanes, wildfires, or other natural disasters that are more commonly found in the summer months. This study aimed to …

Wildland-Urban Interface Fires: Toxic Physicochemical Properties of Emitted Particulate Matter and Impacts on Lung Macrophages.

Due to the growth of urban areas in close proximity to wildlands, wildfires increasingly burn both biomass and man-made materials. The physicochemical properties of emitted particulate matter (PM) from such "wildland-urban interface (WUI)" fires may differ substantially from those of wildland fires and other ambient PM sources. However, the associations between properties and hazards of WUI fire PM have not been studied. Here, we employed a wildfire simulator (WiFS) to reproduce biomass and WUI fires by combusting pinewood and a simplistic WUI fire model (1:1 mixture of pinewood and polyethyle…

Innovative methodologies for elucidating bushfire smoke-induced pathophysiological mechanism.

Over the last century, the awareness of air pollution awareness and its harm to public health have resulted in the implementation of new protective measures to try and limit exposure. Bushfires generate waves of air pollution with orders of magnitudes higher than normal background pollution, necessitating studies to understand the physiological impact. Previous work has strongly linked bushfire smoke to respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD, asthma, lung cancer) cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke), and increased susceptibility to infection (COVID-19

Soil biogeochemistry and microbial community dynamics in Pinus pinaster Ait. forests subjected to increased fire frequency.

Fire frequency might increase in many fire-dominated ecosystems of the world due to the combined effects of global warming, land-use change and increased human pressures. Understanding how changes in fire frequency can affect the main soil biogeochemical dynamics, as well as the microbial community, in the long term is utmost important. Here we determined the effect of changes in fire frequency and other fire history characteristics on soil C and N dynamics and the main microbial groups (using soil fatty acid profiles), in Pinus pinaster forests from central Spain. Stands were chosen to differ

Climate change and allergic diseases: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Increased greenhouse gas emissions since the industrial age have led to higher global temperatures and frequency and severity of climate events, such as heat waves, wildfires, floods, and storms. These changes are adversely affecting human health and increasing disease risk, including risk of allergic diseases. Further understanding of the environmental factors and the cellular and molecular mechanisms mediating these increases can assist in developing strategies to adapt to and mitigate climate change. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the literature from …

High-intensity fire and long-term destocking causes top kill but fails to reverse encroachment and restore biodiversity.

Woody encroachment is a pervasive threat in grasslands worldwide. Encroachment has proven resilient to many nature-based interventions, including frequent burning and destocking grazers. A potential solution is high-intensity fires-or "extreme" fires-which combine high fuel loads with burning under dry windy conditions. Large-scale tests of high-intensity fire are limited and have had mixed results. We compared two catchments of tallgrass prairie heavily encroached by resprouting shrubs, with similar land-use histories, including long-term grazer destocking. In 2021, one catchment burned under
