Prenatal exposure to dental amalgam: evidence from the Seychelles Child Development Study main cohort.

BACKGROUND: Dental amalgams contain approximately 50 percent metallic mercury and emit mercury vapor during the life of the restoration. Controversy surrounds whether fetal exposure to mercury vapor resulting from maternal dental amalgam restorations has neurodevelopmental consequences. METHODS: The authors determined maternal amalgam restoration status during gestation (prenatal exposure to mercury vapor [Hg(0)]) retrospectively in 587 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Seychelles Child Development Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort study of the effects of prenatal and recent postnatal

Brief Report: False Memory Formation in Autism: The Role of Relational Processing at Study.

PURPOSE: Several studies have investigated false memory production in autistic adults, yet it remains unclear whether susceptibility to false memories differs from non-autistic adults and what mechanisms might contribute to any differences. This study examines the mechanisms behind false memory formation in autistic adults using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. METHODS: Participants studied DRM word lists designed to activate a critical word (the 'critical lure). To examine false memory formation and associative processing, participants completed three tasks: a standard recognitio

Neural correlates of spelling difficulties in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with a general cognitive decline that affects the memory and language domains. Thus, an oral production deficit with a lexical-semantic origin has been widely observed in these patients. Their written production capacities, however, have been much less studied. We assessed the spelling abilities of 22 AD patients and a group of matched healthy controls with a test battery including written picture naming and word and pseudoword dictation tests, as well as text dictation and spontaneous writing tasks. The results of the AD patients in the discriminative ta

Maltese readers with Down syndrome: Cognitive and linguistic factors in reading performance.

PURPOSE: This study examined the word and nonword reading abilities of Maltese participants with Down syndrome and explored how cognitive-linguistic skills and orthographic depth influence decoding performance. We hypothesised that word reading would exceed nonword reading in participants with Down syndrome, with a larger discrepancy in English given its deeper orthography. METHOD: A comparative cross-sectional design was used. Fifteen participants with Down sydnrome and 19 typically developing peers, matched on fluid intelligence, completed word and nonword reading assessments in either Malt

Intact associative learning in patients with schizophrenia: evidence from a Go/NoGo paradigm.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia is associated with deficits in executive control and associative learning. In the present study, we investigated the effect of associative learning during a Go/NoGo task in healthy controls subjects and patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Thirty patients with schizophrenia and 30 age-and-gender matched healthy control subjects performed 15 blocks of training and 3 blocks of test trials. The trials consisted of responding to words denoting either living or non-living objects. In the training condition, subjects were instructed to respond by pressing the space bar (Go

Music literacy shapes the specialization of a right hemispheric word reading area.

This study aimed to examine differences in the brain activity of professional musicians and non-musicians, particularly in relation to neuroplastic changes that may be associated with musical training. Specifically, we investigated whether the ability to read complex musical notation might be linked to neurofunctional adaptations that could influence word reading mechanisms. The study involved 80 participants (half of which were musicians). High-density EEG recordings and swLORETA inverse solutions were employed to analyze brain activity related to word processing and orthographic analysis. Th

Alexia in dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

The reading aloud of single words in 16 subjects with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) was compared with the performance of control subjects. The assessment included a computerised test-battery designed to assess word recognition ability and the efficiency of the two underlying reading strategies; the lexical and the non-lexical strategy. The DAT patients had severe difficulties in word recognition ability. Both accuracy score and reaction time were significantly impaired compared with the results in the control group. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that both the lexical and the n

Orthographic/phonological facilitation of naming responses in the picture-word task: an event-related fMRI study using overt vocal responding.

In the picture-word interference task, naming responses are facilitated when a distractor word is orthographically and phonologically related to the depicted object as compared to an unrelated word. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the cerebral hemodynamic responses associated with this priming effect. Serial (or independent-stage) and interactive models of word production that explicitly account for picture-word interference effects assume that the locus of the effect is at the level of retrieving phonological codes, a role attributed recently

No deficiency in left-to-right processing of words in dyslexia but evidence for enhanced visual crowding.

Whitney and Cornelissen hypothesized that dyslexia may be the result of problems with the left-to-right processing of words, particularly in the part of the word between the word beginning and the reader's fixation position. To test this hypothesis, we tachistoscopically presented consonant trigrams in the left and the right visual field (LVF, RVF) to 20 undergraduate students with dyslexia and 20 matched controls. The trigrams were presented at different locations (from -2.5° to + 2.5°) in both visual half fields. Participants were asked to identify the letters, and accuracy rates were compar

Cerebral microbleeds are associated with cognitive decline early after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate whether cerebral microbleeds (CMB) are associated with vascular cognitive decline (VCD) already in the early course after ischemic stroke, and-if so-whether distinct cognitive domains are affected more preferentially by CMB. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, cognitive performance was examined in 33 stroke patients showing ≥ 1 CMB on MRI. Matched for age, gender, clinical and radiological characteristics, 33 stroke survivors without CMB served as a control group. Neuropsychological testing was performed in both groups six mon

Word and Nonword Reading Efficiency in Postlingually Deafened Adult Cochlear Implant Users.

HYPOTHESIS: This study tested the hypotheses that 1) experienced adult cochlear implants (CI) users demonstrate poorer reading efficiency relative to normal-hearing controls, 2) reading efficiency reflects basic, underlying neurocognitive skills, and 3) reading efficiency relates to speech recognition outcomes in CI users. BACKGROUND: Weak phonological processing skills have been associated with poor speech recognition outcomes in postlingually deaf adult CI users. Phonological processing can be captured in nonauditory measures of reading efficiency, which may have wide use in patients with h

The Effects of Individualized Arousal on Recognition Memory of Words.

Emotional information often modulates recognition memory, but the relative roles of arousal and valence remain debated, partly because many studies rely on normative emotion categories rather than individualized affective experience. This study examined whether post-test individualized arousal and valence ratings were associated with recognition-confidence responses to emotional Chinese words and whether the learning task influenced later recognition. Forty participants studied neutral, positive, and negative words under semantic-judgment and recognition-judgment learning conditions. After a 2

Is weak oral language associated with poor spelling in school-age children with specific language impairment, dyslexia or both?

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that word reading accuracy, not oral language, is associated with spelling performance in school-age children. We compared fourth grade spelling accuracy in children with specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia or both (SLI/dyslexia) to their typically developing grade-matched peers. Results of the study revealed that children with SLI performed similarly to their typically developing peers on a single-word spelling task. Alternatively, those with dyslexia and SLI/dyslexia evidenced poor spelling accuracy. Errors made by both those with

Cobalamin supplementation improves cognitive and cerebral function in older, cobalamin-deficient persons.

BACKGROUND: Mild cobalamin (Cbl) deficiency is frequently found in older persons and is associated with cognitive and cerebral abnormalities. The effects of Cbl supplementation on these abnormalities are largely unknown. METHODS: In a single-blind, placebo-controlled intervention study, 16 healthy community-dwelling elderly subjects with low plasma Cbl concentration and no cognitive impairments were studied. Subjects underwent 1 month of treatment with placebo, followed by 5 months of treatment with intramuscular injections of hydroxycobalamin. Before and after measurements of plasma cobalami

Temporal lobe abnormalities in semantic processing by criminal psychopaths as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging.

We tested the hypothesis that psychopathy is associated with abnormalities in semantic processing of linguistic information. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to elucidate and characterize the neural architecture underlying lexico-semantic processes in criminal psychopathic individuals and in a group of matched control participants. Participants performed a lexical decision task in which blocks of linguistic stimuli alternated with a resting baseline condition. In each lexical decision block, the stimuli were either concrete words and pseudowords or abstract words and pseud

Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction Supplementation Improves Cognitive Functioning in Schizophrenia: Data From an 8-Week, Open-Label Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Novel treatment strategies for cognitive dysfunctions may prevent long-term disability in patients with schizophrenia, and polyphenolic compounds might be a promising strategy. Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), a citrus fruit characterized by a high amount of flavonoids and flavonoid glycosides, may represent a potential nutraceutical approach to cognitive dysfunction. The present study was aimed to explore the efficacy of bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF) supplementation on cognitive/executive functioning in a sample of patients with schizophrenia receiving second-generation antipsyc

Chronotype Modulates Language Processing-Related Cerebral Activity during Functional MRI (fMRI).

OBJECTIVE: Based on individual daily physiological cycles, humans can be classified as early (EC), late (LC) and intermediate (IC) chronotypes. Recent studies have verified that chronotype-specificity relates to performance on cognitive tasks: participants perform more efficiently when tested in the chronotype-specific optimal time of day than when tested in their non-optimal time. Surprisingly, imaging studies focussing on the underlying neural mechanisms of potential chronotype-specificities are sparse. Moreover, chronotype-specific alterations of language-related semantic processing have be
