[Skin diseases related to work: how to approach them?].

Work-related skin problems are frequent and mainly affect the hands. They can be approached by looking for indications of the 3 principal underlying types of dermatitis: irritant, allergic, or chronic. Irritation and contact allergy are closely associated: the irritation facilitates the flowering of the allergy. Skin irritation due to working conditions is often multi-causal and repetitive. Cutaneous atopy--but not that which is only respiratory or mucosal--is the main genetic risk factor for the development of a work-related skin disease. The characteristics of irritation and allergy tend to

1991-92 in review: physicians, lobbyists work for good of all.

During the 1991-92 legislative session, several hundred health-related bills were introduced in the Senate and House of Representatives. Hard work by State Society physicians and lobbyists on these bills, addressing such issues as children's health insurance and certificate of need, will benefit all Pennsylvania physicians and their patients in the years to come. The Society's Division of Governmental Relations overviews the major issues and their outcomes.

Head injury and compensation: a preliminary investigation of the postconcussional syndrome in Harare.

A preliminary survey was carried out on forty-two (42) neurosurgical out-patients at Harare and Parirenyatwa Central Hospitals to establish some parameters of the postconcussional syndrome in victims of head injury. Both unstructured and structured forms of interview were used to obtain spontaneous (SPO) and elicited (ELC) responses. The symptoms of headache, dizziness and anxiety were spontaneously endorsed by 28.6 pc, 21.4 pc and 16.7 pc of the patients respectively. There was a close association between headache and dizziness (chi 2 = 5.9; p = 01; df = 1). In the ELC condition, all the nine

Byssinosis: a role for public health in the face of scientific uncertainty.

Byssinosis, a lung disease caused by cotton dust, has been the subject of recent controversy. Debates over the nature of the disease, possible interactions with cigarette smoking, and the proposed reevaluation of the cotton dust standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have tended to overlook the plight of affected workers and to obscure the most effective means for preventing the disease. The present lack of definitive information is no reason for inaction, nor for depriving disabled workers of adequate financial compensation. In this respect, byssinosis is no different f

Patterns of sick-leave and health outcomes in injured workers with back pain.

Little is known about the sick-leave experiences of workers who make a workers' compensation claim for back pain. Our objective is to describe the 1-year patterns of sick-leave and the health outcomes of a cohort of workers who make a workers' compensation claim for back pain. We studied a cohort of 1,831 workers from five large US firms who made incident workers' compensation claims for back pain between January 1, 1999 and June 30, 2002. Injured workers were interviewed 1 month (n = 1,321), 6 months (n = 810) and 1 year (n = 462) following the onset of their pain. We described the course of …

Disability Evaluations: Common Questions and Answers.

Disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits at least one major life activity. Family physicians are often asked to assess patients with disabling conditions that can impact insurance benefits, employment, and ability to access needed accommodations. Disability evaluations are needed for short-term work restrictions following a simple injury or illness and for more complex cases involving Social Security Disability Insurance, Supplemental Security Income, Family and Medical Leave Act, workers' compensation, and personal/private disability insurance claims. Using a st…

A New Zealand regional work-related sprains and strains surveillance, management and prevention programme: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The impact and costs associated with work-related sprains and strains in New Zealand and globally are substantial and a major occupational and public health burden. In New Zealand around one-third of all sprains and strains workers compensation (ACC) claims (2019) are for back injuries, but shoulder and arm injuries are increasing at a faster rate than other sprain and strain injuries (ACC, 2020). A need exists for a change to current approaches to sprains and strains prevention, to more effectively manage this significant and persistent problem in workplaces. Designing out hazards

Diagnosis and Treatment of Work-Related Ulnar Neuropathy at the Elbow.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy after carpal tunnel syndrome and occurs most commonly at the elbow due to mechanical forces that produce traction or ischemia to the nerve. The primary symptom associated with UNE is diminished sensation or dysesthesias in the fourth or fifth digits, often coupled with pain in the proximal medial aspect of the elbow. Treatment may be conservative or surgical, but optimal management remains controversial. Surgery should include exploration of the ulnar nerve throughout its course around the elbow and release of

Prescription opioid use by injured workers in Tennessee: a descriptive study using linked statewide databases.

PURPOSE: This is the first study in Tennessee to measure opioid use in injured workers and among the first nationally to use a prescription drug monitoring program to do so. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the prevalence of opioid use after injury and associated characteristics among workers reporting one injury to Tennessee Workers' Compensation. METHODS: Injured workers identified in Workers' Compensation records 2013-2015 were linked to their prescription history in Tennessee's prescription drug monitoring database. RESULTS: Among 172,256 injured workers, the prevale…

Differences in Work Disability Duration for Immigrants and Canadian-Born Workers in British Columbia, Canada.

This study aimed to investigate differences in work disability duration among immigrants (categorized as economic, family member or refugee/other classification upon arrival to Canada) compared to Canadian-born workers with a work-related injury in British Columbia. Immigrants and Canadian-born workers were identified from linked immigration records with workers' compensation claims for work-related back strain, connective tissue, concussion and fracture injuries requiring at least one paid day of work disability benefits between 2009 to 2015. Quantile regression investigated the relationship …

The hidden injuries of work: Institutional invisibility, precarity, and the recognition of occupational harm. A scoping review.

Work-related injuries and occupational illnesses constitute a substantial but unevenly recognised burden on workers and health systems. While work can provide income, social protection, and social integration, it can also expose workers to physical, psychosocial, and organisational hazards, and the resulting harm remains unevenly documented within occupational health and safety (OHS) systems. Growing evidence indicates that official statistics and compensation and surveillance systems incompletely capture work-related harm, including among workers in precarious or temporary employment and migr
