Workplace physical violence against health care professionals perpetrated by patients and visitors has been a persistent problem worldwide. Prevalence estimates varied vastly across studies and there was a lack of quantitative syntheses of prevalence studies. This review aimed to quantify pooled one-year prevalence estimates at the global and regional levels. A systematic literature search was performed in the databases of PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Embase between 1 January 2000 and 8 October 2018. Studies providing information about one-year prevalence of self-reported workplace ph

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) against health professionals is a global problem with an increasing incidence. The aims of this study were as follows: 1) to examine the frequency and characteristics of WPV in different settings and professionals of a general hospital and 2) to identify the clinical and organizational factors related to this phenomenon.
METHODS: The study was cross-sectional. In a 1-month period, we administered the "Violent Incident Form" to 745 professionals (physicians, head nurses, nurses, nursing assistants), who worked in 15 wards of a general hospital in northern I…

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) is a pervasive occupational hazard in health-care settings and has increasingly been recognized as a major threat to health-care workers' mental health. Previous studies have consistently shown that WPV is associated with a range of adverse psychological outcomes, including depression and anxiety. However, despite the growing body of evidence documenting these associations, the underlying mechanisms through which WPV affects mental health remain insufficiently understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine the associations between WPV and depression an…

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence (WPV) threatens the safety and well-being of healthcare providers and leads to significant organizational consequences, including staff burnout, reduced productivity, and high turnover rates. At the societal level, it reduces the quality of care, increases medical errors, and imposes a substantial economic burden on healthcare systems and communities. Despite the global attention to WPV, systematic reviews specifically addressing WPV across all three professions-physicians, pharmacists, and nurses-and in various healthcare settings in Saudi Arabia are lacking. Th…

Workplace violence (WPV) against healthcare workers (HCWs) in infectious disease hospitals, particularly in high-risk settings, remains a critical yet understudied occupational hazard. A mixed-methods study was conducted at a Chinese infectious disease hospital, combining quantitative surveys (N = 675) and semi-structured interviews (28 HCWs, 17 patients/families). Logistic regression was used to analyze WPV incidence and predictors, while a thematic analysis of interview data identified contextual drivers. Psychological violence (34.1%) was significantly more prevalent than physical violence …

Defensive medicine refers to practices motivated mainly by legal rather than medical purposes. Increased healthcare costs, overutilization of medical services, and potential harm to patients from unnecessary procedures are among its drawbacks. We performed this study to assess the prevalence of defensive medicine practices in Egypt and their associations with experiencing malpractice claims and workplace physical violence. We investigated 1797 physicians (68.1% male), with an average age of 36.8 ± 9.1 years, practicing in Egypt between January 14th and February 23rd, 2023. SPSS was used for st

The risk of aggression against healthcare workers (HCWs) is a globally well-known topic. However, workplace violence (WV) is often considered as part of HCW’s job, leading to a general underreporting. This cross-sectional study aims at providing a descriptive analysis of aggressive acts against HCWs registered in a 34-month period in a pediatric hospital. According to a specific protocol, each aggressive act was analyzed by a multidisciplinary team using the “Modified Overt Aggression Scale” (MOAS), the “General Health Questionnaire-12” (GHQ-12), and the “Short Form-36 Health Survey” (SF-36) t…

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Trauma among psychiatric nurses and other healthcare workers is related to workplace violence, but other risk factors may also contribute, including those occurring before, during or after workplace violence. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Most previously identified PTSD risk factors were not tested or supported in research with psychiatric nurses, although there is promising evidence for risk factors including severe or injurious assault, cumulative exposure, burnout, and other worker characteristics. We identify directions for research needed …

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether organizational responses modified the associations between experiencing violence and depressive symptoms among emergency workers.
METHODS: A nationwide survey of 1966 Korean emergency medical service (EMS) providers was analyzed. Experience of workplace violence (ie, physical violence, verbal abuse) was classified into four groups based on the victims' reporting and organizational responses: (i) "Not experienced," (ii) "Experienced, not reported," (iii) "Experienced, reported, responded by organization,"and (iv) "Experienced, reported, not responded…

BACKGROUND: Aggression theories and cross-sectional studies imply an escalatory pattern of aggressive behaviors; however, this has not been investigated in a follow-up study.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether bullying or conflicts are antecedents of threats and physical violence, and whether threats mediate the relationship between bullying or conflicts and violence. Lastly, it was explored whether associations could be explained through the effect of emotional exhaustion.
METHODS: Survey data was collected from a follow-up sample of 3,584 employees from four human service sectors, namely ps

This study focuses on 34 victims of aggression at the workplace, less than 48 hours following the incident of aggression. We compared victims who received an EMDR emergency protocol (URG-EMDR; n = 19) that we developed with those who received a method of intervention called eclectic therapy (n = 15). The results show that URG-EMDR therapy, provided within 48 hours, resulted in a greater decrease in perceived stress and a lower PCL-S score than eclectic therapy did. The scores were lower in both groups after 24 hours, and after 3 months, the drop was significantly greater among the victims trea

BACKGROUND: Defensive medicine involves clinical practices-either through overuse of interventions (positive) or avoidance of high-risk procedures (negative)-driven by liability concerns rather than patient care. In Egypt, rising medico-legal issues and workplace violence may exacerbate these behaviors. This study assessed the prevalence and drivers of defensive medicine among physicians at a tertiary academic hospital, comparing medical and surgical specialties and examining the impact of prior litigation experience.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Zagazig University Hospit…
