Seasonal vector density and disease incidence patterns of malaria in an area of Zimbabwe.

Anopheline mosquitoes were studied in an area of Zimbabwe to correlate their population densities with seasonality in malaria incidence. Four trapping methods were employed for adult mosquitoes: pit traps, outdoor and indoor man-baited nets and a sheep-baited net. Anopheles funestus exhibited two population peaks during the year, one in March and the other in September/October. The following over-all proportions of the An. gambiae complex were recorded: An. gambiae Giles (2.5%), An. arabiensis Patton (14.3%) and An. guadriannulatus Theobald (83.2%). Peak populations were observed in March, wit…

Pregnancy, childbirth, mother and child care among the indigenous people of Zimbabwe.

Even in areas of Zimbabwe with easy access to Western-type delivery care, the majority of women are cared for and delivered by traditional birth attendants who are members of their extended family. To understand the social, cultural context of pregnancy, childbirth and subsequent maternal and child care and to use this information for the improvement of maternal and child-health care an anthropological investigation was conducted in an area near Harare, Zimbabwe from June 1983 to the end of 1984. Certain aspects of childbirth such as primagravida deliveries and the origins of peripartum compli…

Targeted HIV testing modalities in Zimbabwe: Achieving effectiveness through a revised model.

INTRODUCTION: HIV testing remains central to epidemic control, but awareness of HIV status in Zimbabwe remains below UNAIDS targets. We evaluated a targeted HIV testing model using a risk-screening tool to triage clients for same-day provider-initiated HIV testing, while routing screen-negative clients to HIV self-testing. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods implementation evaluation across eight provinces from April 2021 to June 2022. Thirteen candidate screening questions were evaluated in 7825 clients and reduced to five domains for assessment of the final combined rule in 2116 complete-…

HIV incidence and prevalence projections for Zimbabwe: Findings from five mathematical models.

Introduction: Understanding how HIV epidemics are likely to behave in the future is key to informing HIV response strategies in low-income countries. Up-to-date HIV epidemiological estimates are important for policy decision- making, but surveillance data can be out of date. This study compared forecasts from HIV epidemiological models. Methods: Five independent modelling groups (EMOD-HIV, Goals, HIV Synthesis, Optima and PopART-IBM) calibrated their mathematical models to datapoints provided by the Ministry of Health and produced several indicators of the HIV epidemic in Zimbabwe for the perio…

Addressing sociodemographic disparities in COVID-19 vaccine uptake among youth in Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 vaccine acceptance research has mostly originated from high-income countries and reasons why youth may not get vaccinated may differ in low-income settings. Understanding vaccination coverage across different population groups and the sociocultural influences in healthcare delivery is important to inform targeted vaccination campaigns. METHODS: A population-based survey was conducted in 24 communities across three provinces (Harare, Bulawayo and Mashonaland East) in Zimbabwe between October 2021 and June 2022. Youth aged 18-24 years were randomly selected using multista…

Black-white differences in cancer risk in Harare, Zimbabwe, during 1991-2010.

Data from 20 years of cancer registration in Harare (Zimbabwe) are used to investigate the risk of cancer in the white population of the city (of European origin), relative to that in blacks (of African origin). In the absence of information on the respective populations-at-risk, we calculated odds of each major cancer among all cancers, and took the odds ratios of whites to blacks. Some major differences reflect obvious phenotypic differences (the very high incidence of skin cancer-melanoma and nonmelanoma--in the white population), whereas others (high rates of liver cancer, Kaposi sarcoma a…

Economic development and women's blood pressure: field evidence from rural Mashonaland, Zimbabwe.

A survey of 515 non-pregnant women at 12 geographically chosen research sites in rural Mashonaland shows significant differences in mean blood pressure, controlled by age cohorts. Three levels of economic development are identified: (1) the traditional economy on communal lands, with lowest blood pressure, (2) the wage economy in areas of large-scale commercial agriculture, with elevated blood pressure and (3) the wage economy in mining areas, with the highest elevation of blood pressure. The area is dominated by the primate city, Harare, up to distances of 300 km and beyond, from which forces

Trends of stillbirths in Harare City, Zimbabwe, 2015-2019: a secondary data analysis.

INTRODUCTION: in Zimbabwe, perinatal mortality is a major public health problem. Harare City data showed increase in stillbirth rate trend from 4/1000 live births in 2014 to 6/1000 live births in 2018, failing to meet the country's target of reducing stillbirth rate by 40%. We analysed the characteristics of stillbirths from 2015 to 2019 in Harare City. METHODS: we conducted a retrospective analytical cross-sectional study using secondary data from Harare City Health Department's 12 baby-delivery polyclinics. Fourteen key informants were interviewed to verify information obtained. Using Epi-i…
