[Acute zinc poisoning in a dog].

Zinc-induced haemolytic anaemia was diagnosed in a young dog. The origin of the zinc intoxication was the ingestion of a toy material which contained a high percentage of zinc. The level of zinc in the liver and kidneys was resp. 1050 and 1320 ppm.

The role of zinc in wound healing.

Zinc deficiency has been associated with delayed wound healing. Because zinc deficiency may be common in the United States, foods rich in zinc, as well as all other essential nutrients, should be promoted in the diet of patients who are malnourished or at risk for malnutrition.

A case of zinc chloride ingestion.

Zinc chloride is a powerful corrosive agent. Reports of zinc chloride ingestion are uncommon, and there is little information about its toxicity and management. The authors report the clinical course of a 10-year-old girl who accidentally ingested an acid soldering flux solution (pH, 3.0; zinc chloride, 30% to < 60%). Systemic effects after the ingestion were unremarkable except for lethargy. Thus, chelation therapy was not considered. Severe gastric corrosion was caused by local caustic action. An antral stricture of the stomach approximately 3 weeks after the ingestion developed, and she und…

Iron and zinc interactions in humans.

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in the world; zinc deficiency is associated with poor growth and development and impaired immune response. Several Third World countries are taking measures to increase the dietary intake of iron and zinc with fortification of foods or dietary supplements. Several studies showed that high iron concentrations can negatively affect zinc absorption in adults when these trace minerals are given in solution. However, when iron and zinc are given in a meal, this effect is not observed. Solomons (J Nutr 1986;116:927-35) postulated that the tot…

[The role of zinc in the appearance of cataract].

The level of zinc in 259 crystalline lenses removed after extraction of cataract (senile and traumatic) has been determined. The lowest concentration of zinc in crystalline lenses has been detected in patients with mature senile cataract while the highest concentration-in patients with traumatic cataract. Since many enzymes contain zinc we can suppose that their activity decrease as senile cataract develops. Higher level of zinc in traumatic cataract indicates moderate disturbances of crystalline lens metabolism as compared with senile cataract.

Role of zinc deficiency in carcinogenesis.

Zinc is a trace element required for the growth of normal and neoplastic tissues in a variety of species. Zinc deficiency is associated with alterations in the activity of zinc-dependent enzymes essential for cell replication. Dietary zinc deficiency also increases the incidence of certain tumors while decreasing the incidence of others. The mechanism by which zinc deficiency alters carcinogenesis is not fully understood. Among those tumors whose incidence is increased by dietary zinc deficiency are carcinomas induced by dialkylnitrosamines. This class of carcinogens requires microsomal cytoch…

Zinc deficiency and the developing embryo.

The effect ofin utero zinc deficiency on fetal development in rats is reviewed. Attention is paid to the primary biochemical lesion associated with zinc-related teratogenesis and special consideration is given to the central nervous system. Evidence is presented that the thymidine kinase salvage pathway, used for the synthesis of thymidine monophosphate in DNA synthesis, is depressed more in fetal brain tissue than in the liver. In addition, greater reliance appears to be placed on this pathway than onde novo synthesis in the fetal brain than in other tissues. Some consideration is given to th…

Requirement of zinc in human subjects.

Essentiality of zinc in nutrition of higher animals was established in 1934. Dietary zinc deficiency in humans was recognized in 1961. Dietary requirements for zinc have been estimated factorially and by balance studies. Factors that influence dietary zinc requirement include dietary and other substances that either facilitate or inhibit absorption and retention of zinc; and metabolic phenomena that influence retention or excretion of the element. These determinants must be considered in estimating the requirement and the recommended dietary allowance for this essential element. An approach th…

Zinc in the pathogenesis of hookworm anaemia.

Serum zinc levels in 90 patients with hookworm infection were compared with those of 26 uninfected controls. The severity of infection was graded in terms of haemoglobin levels as well as egg loads. The results showed that the serum zinc levels in anaemic patients with hookworm infection were significantly lower than those of the controls (p less than 0.01).

Effects of zinc in chronic hemodialysis.

Ten male patients requiring maintenance hemodialysis were given zinc in the dialysate (400 micrograms/liter) or placebo in a double-blind crossover experiment. Sexual activity, depression ratings, and hematocrit were unchanged while subjective appreciation of food taste and smell was significantly less during zinc than placebo condition. No patients who were sexually inactive while receiving placebo became sexually active while receiving zinc.

The vitamin A-zinc connection: a review.

A general summary of typical results involving animal studies is shown in TABLE 7. A consistent and established finding is a reduction of plasma vitamin A concentration in zinc-deficient animals despite diets adequate in vitamin A. However, it appears that the depressed plasma vitamin A is not a result of zinc deficiency per se but rather is nonspecific, resulting from food- and growth-restriction factors associated with zinc deficiency. Food restriction apparently is the critical factor, since both immature and mature nongrowing zinc-deficient animals have exhibited the decreased plasma vitam…
