Influences of maternal exposure on the tolerance and physiological performance of Daphnia magna under mercury stress.

We examined the tolerance development to mercury (Hg) by a population of freshwater zooplankton (Daphnia magna) with different pre-exposure histories to Hg. The growth and reproductive performance of the F1 offspring as affected by the maternal (F0) and offspring (F1) exposures was quantified. The F0 daphnids exposed to 2.5 and 25 nM of Hg for 4 d and followed by 4 d of depuration had elevated levels of Hg and metallothionein-like proteins (MTLPs), as well as higher tolerance to Hg toxicity than the control daphnids. The higher Hg tolerance may be attributed to the higher proportion of Hg part…

Thyroid of lake sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens. II. Deiodination properties, distribution, and effects of diet, growth, and a T3 challenge.

The authors studied the properties and tissue distribution of thyroid hormone (TH) deiodination activities measured in vitro at subnanomolar … ther deiodination pathways in liver, intestine, or brain. A diet change from trout pellets to ocean zooplankton reduced somatic growth and plasma T3 levels and increased hepatic and intestinal T3IRD activities and hepatic rT3ORD activity but did not alter hepatic or intestinal T4ORD activity. The authors conclude that plasma T3 in lake sturgeon can be derived …

Biogeochemical cycling and fate of PAHs in coral reef ecosystem: Associations with coral holobiont microbial functional profiles.

Current understanding of the distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coral reef ecosystem remains limited, particularly regarding their potential associations with coral-associated microbial communities. This study investigated PAH occurrence, bioaccumulation, and apparent trophic distribution patterns across ecological compartments within the coral reef ecosystem of the Weizhou Island, northern South China Sea (SCS). PAHs were detected in multiple environmental and biological compartments, with zooplankton and coral tissue exh…

Phototactic behaviour and neurotransmitter profiles in two Daphnia magna clones: Vertical and horizontal responses to fish kairomones and psychotropic drugs.

Animal behavioural responses are increasingly being used in environmental risk assessment. Nevertheless, behavioural responses are still hampered by a lack of standardisation. Phototactic behaviour in zooplankton and in particular in Daphnia has often been associated to vertical migration but there is also 'shore-avoidance' horizontal behaviour: Daphnia uses shades along the shore to swim either to or away from the shore and predators. Previously, we develop a vertical oriented behavioural hardware able to reproduce phototactic fish induced depth selection in Daphnia magna, its modulation by f…

An hypoxia-tolerant flatfish: consequences of sustained stress on the slender sole Lyopsetta exilis (Pleuronectidae) in the context of a changing ocean.

Slender sole Lyopsetta exilis is an abundant groundfish on the continental shelf and inner waters of British Columbia, Canada, where it reaches a maximum standard length of 44 cm. Benthic image surveys coupled with oxygen measurements in Saanich Inlet document a dense population in bottom conditions near anoxia (0.03 ml l-1 oxygen) where diel migrating zooplankton intersect the bottom; we confirm this species is a planktivore, which limits its depth range to the base of the migration layer. In a comparison with slender sole from a nearby well-oxygenated habitat, several probable effects of liv…

Zooplankton and benthic amphipods had typically higher percentages of MeHg compared to the previously reported values, suggesting the efficient transfer of MeHg from the base of the aquatic food web. Vitamin D: A millenium perspective.

Vitamin D is one of the oldest hormones that have been made in the earliest life forms for over 750 million years. Phytoplankton, zooplankton, and most plants and animals that are exposed to sunlight have the capacity to make vitamin D. Vitamin D is critically important for the development, growth, and maintenance of a healthy skeleton from birth until death. The major function of vitamin D is to maintain calcium homeostasis. It accomplishes this by increasing the efficiency of the intestine to absorb dietary calcium. When there is inadequate calcium in the diet to satisfy the body's calcium r…

Evolution and function of vitamin D.

It is remarkable that phytoplankton and zooplankton have been producing vitamin D for more than 500 million years. The role of vitamin D in lower non-vertebrate life forms is not well understood. However, it is critically important that most vertebrates obtain an adequate source of vitamin D, either from exposure to sunlight or from their diet, in order to develop and maintain a healthy mineralized skeleton. Vitamin D deficiency is an unrecognized epidemic in most adults who are not exposed to adequate sunlight. This can precipitate and exacerbate osteoporosis and cause the painful bone diseas…

Bowhead whale foraging dives are defined by speed and body orientation.

Quantifying the time baleen whales spend foraging is central to understanding the extent to which climate driven shifts in low-trophic prey may affect energy acquisition. To date, the most comprehensive understanding of balaenid (bowhead and right whale) feeding behavior comes from studies using inertial sensing tags (biologgers). Here, periods of ram filtration were inferred under predictable foraging conditions where whales targeted a deep, diapausing prey layer. However, foraging conditions are increasingly variable in high latitudes and zooplankton vertical distribution, abundance and biom…

Combined effects of spinetoram and Microcystis aeruginosa on Daphnia pulex offspring: Maternal effects and multigenerational implications.

The increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in freshwater ecosystems detrimentally affect global water environments. Zooplankton's role in controlling HABs is hindered by contaminant exposure, necessitating research into combined stressors' ecological impacts. The response of Daphnia, a freshwater keystone species, to environmental stressors can be influenced by its maternal effects. Here, we investigated the combined effects of the world-widely used insecticide spinetoram and non-toxic HABs species Microcystis aeruginosa on the life-history traits of D. pulex offspring produced f…

Diatom assemblage responses to multiple environmental stressors in a deep brackish plateau lake, SW China.

For another, the increasing fish production results in the decrease in the zooplankton biomass, thus reducing the predation pressure on planktonic algae. Besides, some specific species such as C. meneghiniana may respond to the increased nutrient release and increased salinity since ca. 1998 CE. Combined, our findings demonstrate that …
