Biolarvicidal compound gymnemagenol isolated from leaf extract of miracle fruit plant, Gymnema sylvestre (Retz) Schult against malaria and filariasis vectors.

Owing to the fact that the application of synthetic larvicide has envenomed the surroundings as well as non-target organisms, natural produc … iadaceae) and purified gymnemagenol compound were studied against the early fourth-instar larvae of Anopheles subpictus Grassi and Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae). In the present study, bioassay-guided fractionation of petroleum ether leaf extract of G. sylvestre led to the separation and identification of gymnemagenol as a potential new ant …

The impact of mass drug administration and long-lasting insecticidal net distribution on Wuchereria bancrofti infection in humans and mosquitoes: an observational study in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Uganda is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes. The mainstay of elimination has been annual mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin and albendazole, targeted to endemic districts, but has been sporadic and incomplete in coverage. Vector control could potentially contribute to reducing W. bancrofti transmission, speeding up progress towards elimination. To establish whether the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) can contribute towards reducing transmission of W. bancrofti in a setting with ongoing MDA,

Urban and suburban malaria in Rondônia (Brazilian Western Amazon) II. Perennial transmissions with high anopheline densities are associated with human environmental changes.

Longitudinal entomological surveys were performed in Vila Candelária and adjacent rural locality of Bate Estaca concomitantly with a clinical epidemiologic malaria survey. Vila Candelária is a riverside periurban neighborhood of Porto Velho, capital of the state of Rondônia in the Brazilian Amazon. High anopheline densities were found accompanying the peak of rainfall, as reported in rural areas of the region. Moreover, several minor peaks of anophelines were recorded between the end of the dry season and the beginning of the next rainy season. These secondary peaks were related to permanent a

Situation analysis in a large urban area of India, prior to launching a programme of mass drug administrations to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.

The main strategy now adopted for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is based on mass drug administrations (MDA). Annual administration of antifilarial drugs to 65%-80% of the population at risk of the disease is believed to be necessary if LF is to be eliminated, at least as a public-health problem, within a reasonable time-frame. To facilitate the development of drug-delivery strategies that are sufficient to ensure such high treatment coverages in large urban areas, a situation analysis was undertaken in the Indian city of Chennai. The subjects interviewed came from households wit

Wuchereria bancrofti in a community with seasonal transmission: stability of microfilaraemia, antigenaemia and filarial-specific antibody concentrations.

The effect of seasonal transmission on microfilaraemia, antigenaemia and filarial-specific antibody levels in individuals infected with Wuchereria bancrofti was investigated in a follow-up study in an endemic community in north-eastern Tanzania. The subjects were 37 adult male residents who were found to be positive for circulating filarial antigen (CFA) at the beginning of the study (26 of whom were also found microfilaraemic with W. bancrofti at this time). Blood samples were collected from each subject in July 1998, January 1999 and July 1999, during the seasons when transmission intensity

Malaria morbidity among children exposed to low seasonal transmission in Dakar, Senegal and its implications for malaria control in tropical Africa.

To measure morbidity due to malaria and to study its relationship with transmission and parasitemia in children living in an area of low malaria endemicity, a cohort study of 343 schoolchildren was undertaken during a one-year period in Dakar, Senegal. From parallel investigations on transmission and the frequency of malaria as a cause for outpatient visits, three different seasons were chosen for close monitoring of different clinical parasitologic, and sero-immunologic parameters. The daily incidence rates of malaria parasitemia and primary attacks were at a maximum level during the high tra

Exploring the Antimalarial Potential of Gnetum gnemon Leaf Extract Against Plasmodium berghei in Mice.

Malaria remains a critical global health issue, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease, caused by Plasmodium parasites, is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes and can lead to severe complications and death if untreated. The emergence of drug-resistant strains highlights the urgent need for new antimalarial agents. Gnetum gnemon, a plant native to Southeast Asia, has shown promise due to its rich bioactive compounds. This study aims to evaluate the suppressive, curative, and prophylactic antimalarial potential of Gnetum gnemon leaf extract (GGE) against Plasmodium berghei…

Preliminary evidence that Bunyamwera virus causes severe disease characterized by systemic vascular and multiorgan necrosis in an immunocompromised mouse model.

Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) is the prototypical member of the Bunyamwera serogroup within the Orthobunyvirus genus. BUNV is transmitted by mosquito vectors of the genera Culex, Aedes and Anopheles and has historically circulated in East Africa, though the transmission has been observed in Argentina. BUNV has been identified as an agent of human and animal disease and has also been misdiagnosed as other agents. BUNV is often thought to be an agent of mild febrile illness in humans, though it can cause abortions in ruminants and neurological disease in horses. Joint pain and gastritis have also been…

Vector-borne diseases in Cyprus: A detailed review of the literature.

Vector-borne diseases have been a growing health concern in recent decades due to the global warming, globalization, and increased international travel. With the typical Mediterranean climate and geographical features, Cyprus provides favorable conditions for the growth and survival of arthropod species. For the purpose of this review article, the terms "Cyprus", "vectors" and "vectorborne diseases" were searched in the National Library of Medicine ('PubMed') and the Google Scholar databases. Published articles in the literature have documented mosquito (including Anopheles, Aedes, Culex, and …

The malaria transmission in Anhui province China.

Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum cases have opposite trends in Anhui China in the past decade. Long term and seasonal trends in the transmission rate of P. falciparum in Africa has been well studied, however that of P. vivax transmitted by Anopheles sinensis in China has not been investigated. There is a lot of work on the relationship between P. vivax cases and climatic factors in China, with sometimes contradicting results. However, how climatic factors affect transmission rate of P. vivax in China is unknown. We used Anhui province as an example to analyze the recent transmission …

Post-mortem diagnosis of imported malaria in France: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a potentially lethal parasitic disease due to infection by Plasmodium parasites, transmitted by Anopheles mosquito vectors. Various preventative measures may be recommended for travellers who visit endemic areas. The diagnosis is generally evoked in the context of a febrile patient returning from an endemic zone. Nevertheless, symptoms and clinical signs may be difficult to interpret, and fatal cases may only be diagnosed retrospectively with laboratory techniques, specific pathological features and patient history. The present work reports a case of fatal cerebral malar…

Point prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infection and the comparison of microscopy, rapid diagnostic test and nested PCR for the diagnosis of asymptomatic malaria among children under 5 years in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium infection among children is a serious public health problem. Asymptomatic malaria infection among humans serves as a significant reservoir for transmitting Plasmodium to uninfected Anopheles mosquitoes, fueling malaria endemicity and asymptomatic malaria may progress to clinical malaria. Therefore, prompt and accurate diagnosis of malaria infection is crucial for the management and control of malaria, especially in endemic areas. This study assessed the point prevalence of asymptomatic malaria infection and evaluated the performance of malaria Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT…
