From SARS-CoV-2 hematogenous spreading to endothelial dysfunction: clinical-histopathological study of cutaneous signs of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: To date, very few studies on clinical-histopathological correlations of cutaneous disorders associated with COVID-19 have been conducted. CASE PRESENTATION: The Case 1 was a 90-year-old man, who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 from a nasopharyngeal swab. Two days later, he was hospitalized and after eleven days transferred to Intensive Care Unit. A chest CT showed bilateral ground-glass opacities. Just that day, an erythematous maculo-papular rash appeared on trunk, shoulders and neck, becoming purpuric after few days. Histological evaluations revealed a chronic superficial dermati

Complement-independent nephrotoxic serum nephritis in Munich Wistar rats. Immunologic and ultrastructural studies.

Immunologic mechanisms of proteinuria and ultrastructural alterations of the slit pore complex and glomerular charge barrier were investigated in Munich Wistar (MW) rats with nephrotoxic serum nephritis. Prior to disease induction, normal MW sera demonstrated 50% of the complement hemolytic activity compared with sera obtained from Sprague-Dawley rats. MW rats were sacrificed prior to, at onset (5 to 6 hours), and during maximal proteinuria (heterologous phase). Immunofluorescence revealed binding of rabbit antirat IgG antibodies in a linear pattern to the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) wi

Physiology of vitreous surgery.

Vitreous surgery has various physiological and clinical consequences, both beneficial and harmful. Vitrectomy reduces the risk of retinal neovascularization, while increasing the risk of iris neovascularization, reduces macular edema and stimulates cataract formation. These clinical consequences may be understood with the help of classical laws of physics and physiology. The laws of Fick, Stokes-Einstein and Hagen-Poiseuille state that molecular transport by diffusion or convection is inversely related to the viscosity of the medium. When the vitreous gel is replaced with less viscous saline,

Cytokine up-regulation in ischaemic/reperfused lungs perfused with University of Wisconsin solution and normal saline.

Ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) lung injury using University of Wisconsin solution (UW) as perfusate has not been well studied. Isolated rat lungs were challenged with various periods of ischaemia and/or reperfusion. Haemodynamics, lung weight gain (LWG), capillary filtration coefficient (K(fc)), tissue pathology, the concentrations of cytokines in the perfusate, and mRNAs for the various cytokines in the lung tissues were measured. I/R induced a permeability type of pulmonary oedema, as reflected by increases in LWG and K(fc). LWG and K(fc) in the I(45)R(60)(UW) group (45 min of ischaemia followe

Microangiopathy triggers, and inducible nitric oxide synthase exacerbates dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a representative clinical manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic gastrointestinal tract inflammation. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice have been used to investigate UC pathogenesis, and in this UC model, disturbance and impairment of the mucosal epithelium have been reported to cause colitis. However, how DSS sporadically breaks down the epithelium remains unclear. In this study, we focused on the colonic microcirculation and myenteric neurons of DSS-induced colitis. Moreover, we examined the potential of myenteric neurons as

Multiple manifestations of coronary microvascular dysfunction in a double-hit mouse model of HFpEF.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is increasingly linked to coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), but early, mechanism-resolved phenotyping remains challenging. We developed a multimodal, non-invasive imaging platform to interrogate CMD in a double-hit HFpEF mouse model induced by high-fat diet and chronic nitric oxide synthase inhibition (L-NAME). C57BL/6 mice underwent cine and strain cardiac MRI, dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI with macromolecular (galbumin) and redox-sensitive (3CP) contrast agents, and Doppler-based assessment of coronary flow reserve induced by mul

Hantavirus Infection: Review of Clinical Management.

Hantavirus infection is a rodent-borne zoonotic disease that can present as Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) or Hantavirus Cardiopulmonary Syndrome (HCPS). Both diseases are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The rise of new Hantavirus species and recurrent outbreaks worldwide has renewed interest in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of this viral infection. A narrative literature review was conducted using published articles, review papers, epidemiological reports, and clinical studies on Hantavirus up to 2026. Relevant evidence regarding

Spatiotemporal dynamics of local anesthetic diffusion in nerve revealed by a 2D computational model.

Despite their extensive clinical use, the intraneural pharmacokinetics of local anesthetics, including the mechanisms determining their onset and duration, remain incompletely understood, particularly under pathological conditions. We developed a detailed, spatially compartmentalized computational model of human peripheral nerve fascicles to simulate the diffusion, accumulation, and clearance kinetics of lidocaine and bupivacaine under physiological and acidic conditions. The model integrates nerve fiber architecture, extracellular fluid compartments, and capillary-mediated clearance, paramete

Comparative Diagnostic Accuracy of Pleural Effusion Classification Methods in Cats: An Analysis of Naturally Occurring Cases.

BACKGROUND: Pleural effusion (PE) in cats can result from transudative or exudative processes. Transudates are caused by decreased colloid osmotic pressure (↓COP) or elevated hydrostatic pressure (↑HP) gradient, while exudates arise from increased pleural capillary permeability. Diagnostic classification approaches traditionally rely on pleural effusion total protein (TPPE) and total nucleated cell counts (TNCCPE). In contrast, Light's criteria employing pleural effusion lactate dehydrogenase (LDHPE), LDHPE divided by serum LDH (LDHratio), and pleural effusion to serum protein ratio (TPratio) …

Potassium Clearance in Optic Nerve: A Multidomain Model.

BACKGROUND: Ion and water transport in the central nervous system (CNS) is governed by tightly coupled mechanisms involving electrodiffusion, osmotic pressure, and fluid convection. Disruptions to these processes are implicated in pathological conditions. Understanding the coordinated roles of glial cells and perivascular spaces in regulating ionic and fluid homeostasis is essential for interpreting neural function and dysfunction. METHODS: We developed a multicompartment model of the optic nerve incorporating axons, glial cells, extracellular space (ECS), and three perivascular compartments

Fortunellin ameliorates LPS-induced acute lung injury, inflammation, and collagen deposition by restraining the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Acute lung injury (ALI) is the prevalent respiratory disease of acute inflammation with high morbidity and mortality. Fortunellin has anti-inflammation property, but its role in ALI remains elusive. Thus, this study clarified the function of fortunellin on ALI pathogenesis. METHODS: The ALI mouse model was established by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induction, and lung tissue damage was evaluated utilizing hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The edema of lung tissue was measured by the lung wet/dry (W/D) ratio. The lung capillary permeability was reflected by the protein content in bronch…

Dynamic changes in structure and function of brain mural cells around chronically implanted microelectrodes.

Integration of neural interfaces with minimal tissue disruption in the brain is ideal to develop robust tools that can address essential neuroscience questions and combat neurological disorders. However, implantation of intracortical devices provokes severe tissue inflammation within the brain, which requires a high metabolic demand to support a complex series of cellular events mediating tissue degeneration and wound healing. Pericytes, peri-vascular cells involved in blood-brain barrier maintenance, vascular permeability, waste clearance, and angiogenesis, have recently been implicated as po

Cardiogenic Pulmonary Edema in Emergency Medicine.

Cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE) is characterized by the development of acute respiratory failure associated with the accumulation of fluid in the lung's alveolar spaces due to an elevated cardiac filling pressure. All cardiac diseases, characterized by an increasing pressure in the left side of the heart, can cause CPE. High capillary pressure for an extended period can also cause barrier disruption, which implies increased permeability and fluid transfer into the alveoli, leading to edema and atelectasis. The breakdown of the alveolar-epithelial barrier is a consequence of multiple factors
