The extra-pulmonary stridors of the newborn represent a frequent and difficult diagnosis pathology for the radiologists and the neonatologist. After an introduction about the most important anatomical dates, A. reviews the reasons of the neonatologic stridor, and emphasizes the vascular congenital anomalies, most important for a early differential diagnosis. Concluding, are reported radiologic findings of this shifty pathology.

An additional 47 cases found in the literature are reviewed and a new anatomic classification of choledochoceles is proposed as a guide for treatment. Treatment options are partial excision of the cyst, sphincterotomy, or both.

The manifestations, evaluation, treatment, and course of 123 patients with idiopathic anaphylaxis (IA) are described for a total of 374 patient years of our management. Observation of this group of patients resulted in the description and classification of IA as one or more episodes of generalized IA with multiple systemic manifestations or IA with life-threatening angioedema of the tongue or larynx. Therapy is based on the frequency of episodes. Acute therapy is appropriate for infrequent episodes, but prophylactic therapy is indicated for frequent episodes. In patients with frequent episodes…

One hundred eighty-seven patients were evaluated and treated by hysteroscopy over a 10-year period. To assess therapeutic prognosis, these patients were classified according to the extent of uterine cavity occlusion seen on hysterosalpingography and the type of intrauterine adhesions observed at hysteroscopy. Forty-three patients had mild or filmy intrauterine adhesions, 97 had moderate or fibromuscular adhesions, and 47 patients were classified as having severe connective tissue adhesions. After hysteroscopic treatment, normal menstruation was restored in 88.2% of patients who had menstrual a

Ultrasound is useful as a primary modality for diagnosis of complex nonhydrocephalic intracranial malformations. We present 10 cases of intracranial cerebrospinal fluid containing abnormalities that may be diagnosed by ultrasound. Congenital abnormalities presented include holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, agenesis of the corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst, porencephaly, schizencephaly, and arachnoid cyst. Ultrasound may be used in the fetus or neonate in detecting and separating these abnormalities from hydrocephalus.

Forty-one cases of mesenteric and omental cysts are reported. Histologically, several specific types could be distinguished: lymphangioma, 19 cases; nonpancreatic pseudocyst, 11 cases; enteric duplication cyst, six cases; mesothelial cyst, three cases; and enteric cyst, two cases. A lymphangioma is usually a multiloculated cyst located in the mesentery that shows no discernible wall on computed tomography (CT) and may have characteristics of fat on CT and magnetic resonance imaging. Abnormalities in the small bowel mucosa were frequently noted on barium studies. A nonpancreatic pseudocyst is u

The authors classify rupture of echinococcal cysts into three types: contained, communicating, and direct. Contained rupture occurs when only the parasitic endocyst ruptures and the cyst contents are confined within the host-derived pericyst. When cyst contents escape via biliary or bronchial radicles that are incorporated in the pericyst, the rupture is communicating. Direct rupture occurs when both the endocyst and the pericyst tear, spilling cyst contents directly into the peritoneal or pleural cavities or occasionally into other structures. Communicating and direct forms have more serious

Substantial numbers of patients suffer from chronic back pain without demonstrating identifiable organic pathology of the spine. Since standardized methods of assessing psychological disturbances (e.g. MMPI) in such patients often provoke hostility and resentment, a questionnaire (BPCS) was developed which employs verbal descriptors of pain in the evaluation of emotional problems. Although the initial findings were very promising our investigations question the psychometric properties of the BPCS.

It is easy to make a shortened Lightness Discrimination Test (LDT) using the grey caps of the New Color Test (NCT). The shortened test shows the reduction in contrast sensitivity as well as the original LDT in squint amblyopia multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis and cerebral tumours. So it is a useful complement to the NCT.

Numerous papers on epithelial jaw cysts have appeared in the decade since the publication in 1971 of the WHO histological classification of odontogenic tumours, jaw cysts, and allied lesions. Despite clarification of certain cyst varieties no major revisions are necessary. The following minor modifications are proposed. In the developmental odontogenic group, the terms keratocyst and follicular are preferred to primordial and dentigerous. The alveolar cyst of infants is categorised separately from the gingival cyst of adults. The developmental lateral periodontal cyst is included as a distinct…

Antigenic analysis of Inoue-Melnick virus, formerly called SMON virus, showed that isolates from patients with subacute myelo-optico-neuropathy (SMON) in Japan, thus far tested, belonged to a single antigenic type (type 1). However, Inoue-Melnick virus isolates obtained so far in the United States chiefly from patients with multiple sclerosis could be classified into three types: type 1, type 2, and an intermediate type. At the present state of knowledge, the virus has not been proven to be the causative agent of disease, hence its provisional designation as IMV.

We report the findings in 26 cases of occlusive aortopathy (Takayasu's disease) encountered during eight years. The mean age was 25.3 years and female to male ratio was 2.7:1. Chest and local pain, fever, hypertension (70%) and absent pulses were accompanied by high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) 38 to 126 mm, eosinophilia 4 to 26%. All immunological tests were negative except tuberculin-test (PPD) with 65% positive. EKG was normal in three cases, 23 showed left ventricular hypertrophy, ST-T changes in two and acute myocardial infarction in two cases. The classification: Type I cervico-b…

Results of treatment of 63 cases of laryngeal and laryngotracheal stenosis are presented and a classification of these lesions discussed. Two main types are distinguished: simple isolated stenoses (arytenoid, cricoid and tracheal) and compound stenoses (arytenocricoid, tracheocricoid, arytenotracheocricoid, arytenotracheal). Only arytenoid stenoses, those with an arytenoid component, or lesions associated with laryngeal paralysis provoke cord immobility. The arytenoid lesion therefore differentiates stenoses with fixed from those with mobile vocal cords. Treatment mainly involves adequate enla…

The term "depression" is used to describe a normal mood, a medical symptom, and a collection of psychiatric symptoms. As a normal mood, depression is a common human reaction to a significant loss; as a medical term, it is also used to describe the sadness seen in patients who have other severe medical and psychiatric disorders. Most often, however, "depression" refers to a group of psychiatric syndromes or illnesses with well defined symptoms only one of which is sadness. Depression syndromes are probably universal. There are accounts of depressive illness throughout history from almost every
