Crude somatic antigens from isolated and ultrasonically treated trypanosomes were fractionated by column chromatography. A protein-free antigenic fraction was isolated which reacted monospecifically when tested against hyperimmune sera from rabbits. The method has a potential application in the improvement of serodiagnosis of trypanosomiasis.

The aim of this study was to determine the viral agents associated with acute lower respiratory infections (ALRI) in young children. During a 2-yr period, 204 nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) from children under 4 yr of age living in an orphanage and exhibiting febrile ALRI were studied by both indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) and isolation in four cell lines. NPA cell smears as well as tissue culture cells exhibiting cytopathic effect (CPE) or hemadsorption were stained by IIF for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, influenza A and B, and parainfluenza 1 and 3. Viral etiology was de

Neurological disorders associated with recent and sometimes persistent Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections were present in 9 patients, examined within the course of a year, during the 1980 epidemic in Saint-Etienne, France. Cases included 5 with acute polyneuritis, 2 with lymphocytic meningitis, 1 with a bilateral optic neuritis, and 1 with mild encephalitis presenting as an amnesic disorder. Causal relationships are examined with respect to semiological, biological, therapeutic and epidemiological data. Clinically an initial infection compatible with the mycoplasmic etiology and its time relatio

The diagnosis and clinical features of parainfluenza virus infections are described in 151 children admitted to hospital over a 2-year period. Immunofluorescence was the most sensitive method of laboratory diagnosis, while virus isolation in tissue culture was more often achieved from nasopharyngeal secretions than from cough/nasal swabs. Parainfluenza viruses were responsible for approximately 9% of 1603 acute respiratory admissions. Croup was the commonest of the wide range of respiratory illnesses associated with these infections; in a series of 132 children with croup, a parainfluenza viru

Immunoglobulin metabolism has been studied in five patients with ataxia telangiectasia and in control subjects. Serum IgG levels were normal, increased, or decreased, reflecting normal, increased, or decreased synthetic rates, respectively. Serum IgM concentration was normal in three cases and slightly elevated in two cases. IgM turnover studies in the three cases with normal serum IgM levels showed normal IgM synthetic and catabolic rates. None of the five patients with ataxia telangiectasia had detectable serum IgA, and the maximum IgA synthetic rates possible for these patients were 0.3-10%

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is a widely used and effective tool for detection of anti-Brucella antibodies in serum, easy to perform with high sensitivity and specificity. In this study, we validated an in-house indirect ELISA using B. melitensis whole cell lysate as antigen (Bm-WCL iELISA) for the serodiagnosis of caprine brucellosis and evaluated the use of BSL-2 B. neotomae in replacement of BSL-3 Brucella species as an antigen for the detection of Brucella-specific antibodies in ruminant sera. Using 724 serum samples from female crossbred goats classified as brucellosis-positi

Brucella abortus S19 and RB51 are the most used vaccines to control bovine brucellosis worldwide; therefore, this study aimed to perform a systematic review on the effectiveness of these two vaccine strains in field studies. The literature review was conducted on April 3rd 2020 on six databases (CABI, Cochrane, PubMed, Scielo, Scopus and Web of Science) and included papers published between 1976 and 2016. The search strategy recovered a total of 5846 papers on databases and 6 papers were included due to specialists' suggestions. After selection, 17 papers were included, in which 33 trials were

Coxiella burnetii causes coxiellosis in animals and Q fever in humans, a potentially debilitating zoonotic disease commonly transmitted through domestic ruminants. To prevent transboundary spread of C. burnetii, animals may be tested prior to export. In alpacas, this process is complicated by the lack of scientific evidence for C. burnetii infection in the species, and the unique composition of camelid antibodies, which may cause false-positive results in assays developed for ruminants. We evaluated a complement fixation test (CFT; currently recommended for alpacas in New Zealand), an enzyme-l

The commonest ways of diagnosing brucellosis in animals include the Rose-Bengal plate agglutination test, the buffered plate agglutination test (BPA), the slide agglutination test, the complement fixation test, and the indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA). However, these methods cannot discriminate the Brucella vaccine strain (Brucella suis strain 2; B. suis S2) from naturally acquired virulent strains. Of the six common Brucella species, Brucella melitensis, Brucella abortus, and B. suis are the commonest species occurring in China. To develop an ELISA assay that can different

The role of heart transplants for treating Chagas' heart disease is not quite clear. Immunosuppression could lead to resurgence of T. cruzi infection with acute or chronic damage to the allograft. There are few publications regarding this issue. Thus we reported the follow-up of 18-patients with Chagas' heart disease submitted to orthotopic heart transplants from 1985 to 1993 at The Heart Institute. The patients were in functional class IV or II, with sustained ventricular tachycardia episodes. The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 25 +/- 9% and the mean right ventricular ejection wa

Approximately 120 cases of blastomycosis have been reported from Canada to-date. The great majority of these occurred in the Eastern provinces. Since 1970, three cases of blastomycosis have been seen in Alberta. The first case, with meningeal and pulmonary involvements, was diagnosed at post-mortem. The second case was that of a 75-year-old male with a history of pancytopenia, aortic arteriosclerosis, exposure to mercury, and fever. KOH and periodic-acid schiff (PAS) stained smears of the lung tissue, received after autopsy, showed numerous budding yeast cells of Blastomyces dermatitidis along

A survey of hydatid disease has been carried out at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital over a ten-year period from 1964 to 1974. It would appear that there has been no change in incidence in hydatid disease in the last 25 years. Fifty per cent of the hydatid cysts dealt with in this series occurred in the liver, and 30% were in the lung. Forty per cent of patients with lung hydatid disease were found to harbour hydatid cysts in the liver as well, while 24% of those with hydatid disease in the liver were found to have co-existent lung cysts. Twenty per cent of patients with pulmonary hydatid cyst
