Intraarticular atlantooccipital fusion for the treatment of traumatic occipitocervical dislocation in a child: a new technique for selective stabilization with nine years follow-up.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report of traumatic atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD) managed by intraarticular-posterior fusion from a posterior approach at the C0-C1 level with preservation of C1-C2 motion. OBJECTIVE: To present a new technique for atlantooccipital fusion with long-term follow-up. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is an increasing number of patients with AOD who have preservation of neurologic function. The most frequent method used to treat this condition is occipitocervical fusion. There has been a tendency in recent years to minimize the extent of stabilization, performing occipi

A Case of Multicentric Isocitrate Dehydrogenase-Wildtype Glioblastoma With Divergent Clonal Evolution.

Here, we present a rare case of multicentric glioblastoma in which two spatially distinct tumors exhibited different molecular profiles. A 56-year-old woman presented with progressive headache and speech difficulties. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed two separate contrast-enhancing lesions, one in the left superior temporal gyrus and the other in the right middle temporal gyrus, with no connecting tract or edema on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging. Multicentric glioblastoma was suspected, and the patient underwent two-stage surgical resection of both tu

Multimodal prehabilitation to prevent loss of cardiorespiratory fitness in patients with locally advanced lung cancer undergoing chemoimmunotherapy: protocol for a non-randomized multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the second most common cancer globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Although 5-year survival rates remain lower than those of other cancer types, significant improvements have been observed in recent years, largely due to the introduction of immunotherapy and targeted therapies. Recently, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been approved for use in combination with standard double-platinum chemotherapy in the neoadjuvant setting for resectable NSCLC, improving outcomes and extending time to recurrence. However, neoadjuv

Functional recovery of injured cavernous nerves achieved through endogenous nerve growth factor-containing bioactive fibrous membrane.

Radical prostatectomy is a highly successful treatment for prostate cancer, among the most prevalent manifestations of the illness. Damage of the cavernous nerve (CN) during prostatectomy is the main cause of postoperative erectile dysfunction (ED). In this study, the capability of a personalized bioactive fibrous membrane to regenerate injured CN was investigated. The fibrous membrane bioactivity is conferred by the selectively bound nerve growth factor (NGF) present in the rat urine. In a rat model of bilateral CN crush, the implanted bioactive fibrous membrane induces CN regeneration and re

Abdominal Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour Presenting as a Pancreatic Mass: A Case Report.

An abdominal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (AIMT), is a rare benign tumor composed of inflammatory and other mesenchymal cells. It can affect the entire body, predominantly in children and young adults. The diagnosis is challenging considering the wide clinical presentation and can often be mistaken for malignant tumors. We report a rare case of a 46-year-old female patient, who presented with intermittent abdominal pain weight loss, and an abdominal palpable mass. Abdominal ultrasound found a well-defined 18 cm, rounded mass, with solid and cystic components. Abdominal CT demonstrated a

Tanshinone IIA promotes the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells into neuronal-like cells in a spinal cord injury model.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most severe central nervous system injuries. Currently, transplanting bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is considered a therapeutic option for SCI. Tanshinone IIA (TIIA) is one of the extracts obtained from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, which has been shown to have some protective effects against SCI. The present research was aimed to explore whether TIIA would influence the fate of transplanted BMSCs in a rat model of SCI, especially with regard to their differentiation into neuronal cells. METHODS: Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells w

Hydromyelia secondary to spinal epidural abscess. A case report.

Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition that can be fatal if untreated. Risk factors are immunocompromised states as well as spinal procedures including epidural anesthesia and spinal surgery. The signs and symptoms of SEA are nonspecific and can range from low back pain to sepsis. The treatment of choice is surgical decompression followed by four to six weeks of antibiotic therapy. The most common causative organism in SEA is staphylococcus aureus and spread is usually haematogenous or contiguous from psoas, paraspinal or retropharyngeal abscesses. The exact mechanism by which an ep
