OBJECTIVE: The disadvantages of water-soluble gastrointestinal contrast agents include high osmolality, contrast dilution, and severe toxicity if aspirated. Perfluorocarbons are nontoxic in the lung and peritoneal cavity. Because perfluorocarbons are immiscible with water, they have no osmotic effect and cannot be diluted.
