OBJECTIVE: To understand the infection status of intestinal parasites and related knowledge and behavior factors of the residents in north-west Shandong Province, so as to provide the evidence for taking targeted preventive measures.
METHODS: Eighteen villages were randomly selected as survey spots by the stratified multi-stage sample method. The Kato-Katz technique was used to detect intestinal parasite eggs among the residents and the cellophane tape anus test was used to detect Enterobius vermicularis eggs among 3-12 years old children. Questionnaires were applied to investigate related kn

Tissue invasive helminth infections and tuberculosis (TB) are co-endemic in many parts of the world and can trigger immune responses that might antagonize each other. We have previously shown that helminth infections modulate the Th1 and Th17 responses to mycobacterial-antigens in latent TB. To determine whether helminth infections modulate antigen-specific and non-specific immune responses in active pulmonary TB, we examined CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell responses as well as the systemic (plasma) cytokine levels in individuals with pulmonary TB with or without two distinct helminth infections-Wuch

Strongyloides stercoralis is a ubiquitous intestinal nematode, endemic in tropical and subtropical areas, with an unusual life cycle in which autoinfection can take place. In the immunosuppressed host, autoinfection is accelerated and larvae can spread in all organs, leading to hyperinfection syndrome or to disseminated disease. Strongyloidiasis is presently rare in Western Countries, often with delayed diagnosis due to a lack of clinical suspicion, nonspecific presentation, and low parasite intestinal output. Foreign HIV-infected patients from endemic areas are at increased risk of severe dis

BACKGROUND: Soil transmitted helminth infections are among the most common human infections. They are distributed throughout the world with high prevalence rates in tropical and sub-tropical countries mainly because of lack of adequate sanitary facilities, inappropriate waste disposal systems, lack of safe water supply, and low socio-economic status.
METHODS: A comparative cross sectional study was conducted from December 2011 to June 2012 to determine and assess the prevalence of soil transmitted helminths and their associated factors among government and private primary school children. Sto

Epidemiological studies show that parasitic inections are among the most common infections and one of the biggest health problems of the society worldwide. Children at school age have the highest morbidity compared with other ages. Therefore, by treating these children, the disease burden in the total population is reduced. In this study, prevalence of parasitic infection in children referred to Children's Medical Center was compared in different years. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, the subjects were children under 13 years who were referred to Children's Medical Center Laborato

This paper evaluates the prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in a specific population over three years (2007-2009). The results were compared with published data collected from the same population in 1984-1985. During a survey from January 1st 2007 to December 31(st) 2009 a total of 2962 inpatients and outpatients were evaluated in our facility (IRCCS Foundation - Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico) for ova and protozoa stool examination (OPE) over three specimens collected alternatively for three days. 614 inpatients and outpatients were evaluated for the Graham Test (GT) over three slides collec

OBJECTIVE: Transmission of parasites generally occurs through fecal-oral means directly from human to human or through receiving eggs and cysts by means of nourishment. The aim of the study was to investigate the frequency of intestinal parasites among administrators and workers in sanitary and non-sanitary institutions.
METHODS: Stool specimens were examined using native-lugol, Trichrome and acid-fast stains methods.
RESULTS: 23.7% of the 2443 fecal specimens were found to be positive. The frequencies of parasites were found to be 9.8% for Entamoeba coli, 7.2% for Blastocystis hominis, 7.2%

BACKGROUND: Deworming HIV-1 infected individuals may delay HIV-1 disease progression. It is important to determine the prevalence and correlates of HIV-1/helminth co-infection in helminth-endemic areas.
METHODS: HIV-1 infected individuals (CD4>250 cells/ul) were screened for helminth infection at ten sites in Kenya. Prevalence and correlates of helminth infection were determined. A subset of individuals with soil-transmitted helminth infection was re-evaluated 12 weeks following albendazole therapy.
RESULTS: Of 1,541 HIV-1 seropositive individuals screened, 298 (19.3%) had detectable helmint

Duck rearing is an important component of sustainable living in poor rural communities, especially as a source of subsistence. A study was conducted on 118 households (N = 1,373 Jinding ducks, Anas platyrhynchus) from December 2002 to February 2004 on Hatia Island in Bangladesh with the aim of identifying the factors that limit the health and production of Jinding ducks. Overall duck mortality was 29.3%, with disease (19.7%) being a more significant factor than predation (9.6%; p = 0.001). Duck mortality also varied significantly among study zones (p < 0.001). Common diseases were duck plague

AIM: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is usually acquired in childhood and may adversely affect growth, although data are inconsistent. This study investigated growth parameters in a paediatric cohort with a high prevalence of H. pylori and helminth infection.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of African refugee children (<16 years) recruited at their initial health assessment following resettlement in Australia. Detailed demographic, infection and anthropometric data were obtained. H. pylori infection was diagnosed by monoclonal faecal antigen enzyme immunoassay testing (MFAT). Growt

The paper compares the data of parasitological studies made according to the plan and epidemiological indications with the results of screening surveys of 1256 children from the Batken Region. The proportion of positive findings at the laboratories of therapeutic-and-prophylactic institutions was found to total 4.5%. According to the results of the screening surveys, the invasiveness was more than 100% with mixed invasions being kept in mind. Analysis of replies to questionnaires suggests that there was a high risk of infection in children. Thus, 84% of the respondents had bad habits; 62% did

BACKGROUND: Helminth infection is common in malaria endemic areas, and an interaction between the two would be of considerable public health importance. Animal models suggest that helminth infections may increase susceptibility to malaria, but epidemiological data has been limited and contradictory.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a vaccine trial, we studied 387 one- to six-year-old children for the effect of helminth infections on febrile Plasmodium falciparum malaria episodes. Gastrointestinal helminth infection and eosinophilia were prevalent (25% and 50% respectively), but did not infl

Displacement and refugee camps provide ideal grounds for the transmission of parasites and increase the risk of acute respiratory infections, diarhoea diseases, and intestinal parasitic infection. Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia, Entomoeba histolytica, Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm infection, Schistosoma haematobium, S. mansoni and Strongyloides stercoralis are important cosmopolitan intestinal parasites that are common among children, the immunocompromised and displaced populations. Five hundred and eighty one residents from 5 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camps voluntarily par

Fascioliasis and other food-borne trematodiases are included in the list of important helminthiases with a great impact on human development. Six plant-borne trematode species have been found to affect humans: Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica and Fasciolopsis buski (Fasciolidae), Gastrodiscoides hominis (Gastrodiscidae), Watsonius watsoni and Fischoederius elongatus (Paramphistomidae). Whereas F. hepatica and F. gigantica are hepatic, the other four species are intestinal parasites. The fasciolids and the gastrodiscid cause important zoonoses distributed throughout many countries, while W

Iron deficiency and helminth infections are two common conditions of children in developing countries. The consequences of helminth infection in young children are not well described, and the efficacy of low dose iron supplementation is not well documented in malaria-endemic settings. A 12-mo randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind trial of 10 mg daily iron and/or mebendazole (500 mg) every 3 mo was conducted in a community-based sample of 459 Zanzibari children age 6-71 mo with hemoglobin > 70 g/L at baseline. The trial was designed to examine treatment effects on growth, anemia and appe

The early stage of experimentally induced secondary cerebral alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in rats was investigated by use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and immunoblot (western blot) analyses. Thirty-six female Wistar rats (6 to 8 weeks old) were injected intracranially with a 10% homogenate of echinococcal larval tissues in which the concentrations of microvesicles and protoscolices were estimated to be 3.8 and 1.5 x 10(4)/ml, respectively. To observe the fine structure of the rat brain, MRI was performed under a high magnetic field of 7.05 T. Histologic examination also was performed. T
