Oscillatory neural networks.

Despite the fact that a large number of neuronal oscillators have been described, there are only a few good examples that illustrate how they operate at the cellular level. For most, there is some isolated information about different aspects of the oscillator network, but too little to explain the whole mechanism. Two quite remarkable features do seem to be emerging from ongoing studies, however. One is that there are very few generalizable features common to neural oscillators. Many utilize reciprocal inhibitory circuits and endogenous burst-generating currents to some extent. All that have b

Trends in Malaria in Odisha, India-An Analysis of the 2003-2013 Time-Series Data from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program.

BACKGROUND: Although Odisha is the largest contributor to the malaria burden in India, no systematic study has examined its malaria trends. Hence, the spatio-temporal trends in malaria in Odisha were assessed against the backdrop of the various anti-malaria strategies implemented in the state. METHODS: Using the district-wise malaria incidence and blood examination data (2003-2013) from the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program, blood examination-adjusted time-trends in malaria incidence were estimated and predicted for 2003-2013 and 2014-2016, respectively. An interrupted time series

Body growth and shape regulation by neuropeptides and other neuroactive peptides in insects.

Animals exhibit species- and stage-specific variation in body size and shape. Body size depends on initial size, growth rate, and duration, and is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as sex, genetics, nutrition, and temperature. Body shape is further influenced by the mechanical and chemical properties governing morphogenesis at cellular, tissue, and organismal levels. These processes are particularly well understood in insects, where genetic and environmental effects on body growth and shape are largely restricted to juvenile stages, coordinated by networks of local and systemi

Screening and Functional Analysis of a Novel Salivary Effector DcE13 from the Asian Citrus Psyllid, Diaphorina citri.

The lack of sequence similarity among insect effectors necessitates the independent identification of effectors in the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri, the primary vector of huanglongbing pathogens. In this study, nine candidate effectors were identified from the D. citri salivary gland transcriptome. Among them, DcE13 exhibited the highest FPKM value and was delivered into plants during feeding. Transient expression in tobacco leaves showed that DcE13 is localized in the plasma membrane and around the nuclear envelope of plant cells. It inhibits BAX- and INF1-induced hypersensitive resp

Molecular Recognition of Kairomones with Two Olfactory-Related Proteins in the Bean Weevil (Callosobruchus chinensis).

Callosobruchus chinensis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a significant pest of legumes, causing serious losses. Odorant-binding proteins play a crucial role in regulating the behaviors of insects, including mating and oviposition. In this study, we identified 11 novel CchiOBPs and analyzed the expression levels of these CchiOBPs in different tissues. Seven candidate CchiOBPs were selected by expression correlation analysis after 2,3-butanediol induction. Notably, silencing of CchiOBP6 and CchiOBP7 significantly diminished the behavioral and electroantennogram responses to 2,3-butanediol, sugges

Molecular evidence from xenacoelomorph gonopore formation supports homology with the bilaterian anus.

The bilaterian through gut with an anal opening is a major evolutionary innovation in animals. It facilitates effective food processing, which allows animals to grow to a larger body size. However, because non-bilaterian animals (such as cnidarians) lack a through gut, the evolution of the anus in bilaterians (such as insects and humans) remains unresolved. The formation of the bilaterian hindgut is driven by the spatial expression of several transcription factors (for example, Caudal and Brachyury) under the control of Wnt signalling. Here we show that this bilaterian 'hindgut' molecular sign

Pathogen-specific social immunity is associated with erosion of individual immune function in an ant.

Contagious diseases are a major threat to societies in which individuals live in close contact. Social insects have evolved collective defense behaviors, such as social care or isolation of infected workers, that prevent outbreaks of pathogens. It has thus been suggested that individual immunity is reduced in species with such 'social immunity'. However, this hypothesis has not been tested functionally. Here, we characterize the immune response of the ant Lasius niger using a combination of genomic analysis, experimental infections, gene expression quantification, behavioural observations and

Chromosome-level genome assembly of Chouioia cunea Yang, the parasitic wasp of the fall webworm.

Chouioia cunea Yang 1989 is a parasitic wasp of many lepidopteran insects during their pupal stage, and has been successfully used to control pests such as the fall webworm Hyphantria cunea. Here we reported the chromosome-level genome of C. cunea by using short (MGI-SEQ), long (Oxford Nanopore), chromatin-linked (Hi-C) sequencing reads and transcriptomic data, representing the first chromosome-level genome of parasitic wasps of the family Eulophidae. The total assembly length is 171.99 Mb, containing 6 pesudo-chromosomes with a GC content of 36.89% and the scaffold/contig N50 length of 31.70/

A method for topical dosing of invertebrates with pesticide for use in feeding experiments.

The ability to produce large numbers of pesticide-exposed insects (e.g. crickets) is important for feeding studies into the effects of pesticides on key predatory species. House crickets (Acheta domesticus L. 1758) were submersed in serial dilutions of the pesticides, fenitrothion and fipronil, used for the control of locusts in Australia, and then rapidly frozen for residue analysis. Good correlations were found between increasing concentrations of serial pesticide dilutions and the resultant residual concentrations of the parent compounds in crickets, with R2 values of 0.949 (fenitrothion) a

A Blood-Free Diet to Rear Anopheline Mosquitoes.

Malaria research requires large-scale breeding and production conditions for mosquitoes (Anopheles spp.) in captivity. The sustainable and reliable production of mosquitoes is currently inhibited by the supply of fresh vertebrate blood. Alternatives to blood are required to promote efficient control strategies for malaria and other vector borne diseases that are transmitted by blood feeding insects. With this in mind, artificial liquid diets were formulated as substitutes for fresh vertebrate blood. Herein we report a blood-free artificial liquid diet that delivers feeding rates similar to blo

Chemical Ecology of Neuroptera.

With 6,000 species, Neuroptera (lacewings, antlions, dustywings, and allies) is a relatively small order; however, most larval neuropterans are predacious, often in agricultural systems, lending added importance to this group. Advances in neuropteran phylogeny, most recently through genomic studies, stabilized the nomenclature of this ancestral order of Holometabola, facilitating basic and applied research on these important and interesting insects. The first pheromones for green lacewings (Chrysopidae) have been identified; this, and other research on antlions (Myrmeleontidae), suggests that

Cloning and characterization of a V-ATPase subunit C from the American visceral leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis modulated during development and blood ingestion.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a serious tropical disease that affects approximately 500 thousand people worldwide every year. In the Americas, VL is caused by the parasite Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi mainly transmitted by the bite of the sand fly vector Lutzomyia longipalpis. Despite recent advances in the study of interaction between Leishmania and sand flies, very little is known about sand fly protein expression profiles. Understanding how the expression of proteins may be affected by blood feeding and/or presence of parasite in the vector's midgut might allow us to devise new

[Circulation of virus and interspecies contamination in wild animals].

Paradoxically, just when we have succeeded in eradicating and/or bringing under control the major viral infections (smallpox, poliomyelitis, measles) numerous viral infections are emerging in man and in animals. Changes in our social environment, technological and ecological equilibrium have facilitated this phenomenon. Furthermore, certain of these viruses have demonstrated an almost unlimited capacity to adapt genetically to environmental change. HIV has already infected 40 million individuals, but monkeypox, Ebola, simian herpes can cause epidemics with serious if not fatal outcomes. Haemor

Evolutionary relationships and implications for the regulation of phospholipase A2 from snake venom to human secreted forms.

The amino acid sequences of 40 secreted phospholipase A2's (PLA2) were aligned and a phylogenetic tree derived that has three main branches corresponding to elapid (group I), viperid (group II), and insect venom types of PLA2. The human pancreatic and recently determined nonpancreatic sequences in the comparison align with the elapid and viperid categories, respectively, indicating that at least two PLA2 genes existed in the vertebrate line before the divergence of reptiles and mammals about 200-300 million years ago. This allows resolution for the first time of major genetic events in the evo

Cell-mediated immunity in experimental cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis are caused by Leishmania major, L. tropica, L. mexicana, L. amazonensis and L. panamensis. Like all leishmanial species, these are obligate intracellular parasites of the mononuclear phagocyte system, with a restricted range of vertebrate hosts including humans, dogs, rodents and arboreal animals. The disease evolves chronically, usually with slow healing, but can sometimes become nonhealing, diffuse disseminating or relapsing. The parasite exists within the macrophages of the vertebrate host in the amastigote form. These transform into extracellular flagellate

Morphofunctional characteristics of flight-related traits in deltamethrin-resistant and susceptible Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) of the Argentinean Chaco.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, transmitted by triatomine bugs, is a major vector-borne parasitic disease in Latin America. Triatoma infestans, the principal vector in the Southern Cone, is primarily controlled through residual insecticide spraying. However, resistance to pyrethroids, especially in Northern Argentina and Southern Bolivia, has emerged. Resistant T. infestans populations exhibit reduced fitness, including impacts on reproductive success and dispersal capacity. This study investigates the flight potential and morphological changes in T. infestans populations with varying levels of in

Under the radar: Transcriptomic responses of bed bugs to an entomopathogen, environmental bacteria, and a human pathogen.

Bed bugs (Hemiptera: Cimicidae) are widely distributed, obligately blood-feeding insects, but they have never been linked to pathogen transmission in humans. Most other hematophagous insects that frequently bite humans transmit pathogens, and it is unclear why bed bugs do not. One hypothesis is that bed bugs have evolved a highly robust immune system because their mating system, traumatic insemination, exposes females to consistent wounding and bacterial infections. Although this has been proposed, very little is known about the bed bug immune system and how bed bugs respond to microbial chall

Under-Expression of Chemosensory Genes in Domiciliary Bugs of the Chagas Disease Vector Triatoma brasiliensis.

BACKGROUND: In Latin America, the bloodsucking bugs Triatominae are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease. Chemical elimination programs have been launched to control Chagas disease vectors. However, the disease persists because native vectors from sylvatic habitats are able to (re)colonize houses-a process called domiciliation. Triatoma brasiliensis is one example. Because the chemosensory system allows insects to interact with their environment and plays a key role in insect adaption, we conducted a descriptive and comparative study of the chemosensory transcr
