BACKGROUND: Optic disc pits represent a rare congenital abnormality frequently associated with macular detachment. Several theories on the pathogenesis of the detachment have been proposed, but the issue still remains unclear. Treatment remains speculative as well; advocated treatments include eye-patching, bed rest, steroids, laser photocoagulation, pars plana vitrectomy with fluid-air exchange and optic nerve sheath decompression.
METHODS: The Authors report on the case of an optic pit with associated macular detachment which developed an inner layer macular hole and, after an apparently in

Thirty-seven eyes initially treated with argon blue-green, argon green, or krypton red laser photocoagulation demonstrated a recurrent subretinal neovascular membrane (SRNVM) at the edge of the treatment scar extending into the foveal avascular zone and were retreated with krypton red laser photocoagulation. The subretinal neovascular membrane was due to the presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) in 10 eyes, aging macular choroidal degeneration (AMCD) in 22 eyes, and miscellaneous causes in five eyes. Anatomic success, defined as complete obliteration of the recurrent SRNVM, was achiev

The laser induced model of choroidal neovascularization (LiCNV) is a commonly used in vivo rodent model to study neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), although progression of this model is not well understood. In this study we characterize and compare the longitudinal progression of wound healing of laser induced choroidal neovascular (CNV) lesions in young and old mice. Using 2-month and 12-month-old C57BL/6J mice and ocular computerized tomography (OCT), fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography we performed a longitudinal imaging analysis at 3-, 7-, 14- and 28-days follow

PF1 + 2 plasma levels are a crucial indicator for assessing anticoagulant action in individuals receiving anticoagulant treatment. Urine also has PF1 + 2 levels due to its molecular size. Hence, the present study aims to measure urinary prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (uPF1 + 2) in patients taking anticoagulants in order to divulge a noninvasive surrogate marker of PT-INR of blood coagulopathy. A total of 205 people participated in the study: 104 patients on acenocoumarol (AC) and 101 healthy controls (HC). Clinical parameters, including PT-INR, urinary creatinine, etc., were measured in all subjec

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), or Osler Weber-Rendu disease, is a rare inherited disorder of fibrovascular tissue affecting various organs. Epistaxis is the most common symptom of HHT but as the disease affects multiple organs, a multisystem and multidisciplinary approach to management is required. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to HHT for the otolaryngologist and to discuss the current pharmacologic and procedural treatment options available for HHT-related epistaxis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multidisciplinary
