Efavirenz-Associated Retinal Toxicity Presenting with Night Vision Defects in Patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Ocular lesions in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are commonly due to underlying opportunistic infections. With highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), infectious lesions have reduced and noninfectious ocular manifestations including drug-related side effects have been noted. While retinal toxicity has been noted with few other HAART drugs, there are not many on the same with Efavirenz usage. We report a series of five patients with possible efavirenz-related retinal toxicity, visual function abnormalities, and its management. Efavirenz was replaced with alternate anti-r

Normal versus high tension glaucoma: a comparison of functional and structural defects.

PURPOSE: To compare visual field defects obtained with both multifocal visual evoked potential (mfVEP) and Humphrey visual field (HVF) techniques to topographic optic disc measurements in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and high tension glaucoma (HTG). METHODS: We studied 32 patients with NTG and 32 with HTG. All patients had reliable 24-2 HVFs with a mean deviation of -10 dB or better, a glaucomatous optic disc and an abnormal HVF in at least 1 eye. Multifocal VEPs were obtained from each eye and probability plots created. The mfVEP and HVF probability plots were divided into a c

Causes of visual impairment and blindness among the middle-aged and elderly in northern Jordan.

Causes of bilateral low vision (BLLV) and bilateral blindness (BLB) were investigated among 720 outpatients aged > 45 years in Irbid, Jordan, between July 1999 and October 2000. All received full ophthalmic examinations. BLLV was defined as visual acuity < 6/18 but > 3/60 in the better eye; BLB as acuity < 3/60 in the better eye. The leading cause of BLB and BLLV was cataract. Refractive error was the second major cause of BLLV. Other common causes were diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Age-related macular degeneration was the single cause of BLB and BLLV for only 1.6% and 2.8% respectively.

Genetic polymorphism of renin-angiotensin system is not associated with diabetic vascular complications in Japanese subjects with long-term insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

In a hospital cohort study, we examined whether or not ACE (Angiotensin-I converting enzyme) and AGT (Angiotensinogen) gene polymorphisms were associated with the development of nephropathy in long-term Japanese insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients with or without proliferative retinopathy, and whether or not the polymorphisms were associated with an arteriosclerotic family history in first degree relatives of the patients. A total of 201 patients with IDDM for more than 10 years and 159 patients with IDDM for more than 15 years were randomly selected in our hospital. All patien

A Novel Approach for Integrating AF-SLO and SDOCT Imaging Data Demonstrates the Ability to Identify Early Retinal Abnormalities in Mutant Mice and Evaluate the Effects of Genetic and Pharmacological Manipulation.

Noninvasive ocular imaging platforms are undeniably useful in identifying retinal abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to investigate a novel method for integrating information acquired from two independent imaging platforms, AF-SLO and SDOCT, in order to demonstrate retinal perturbations as a result of genetic or pharmacological manipulation. Two cohorts of mice were investigated, Nyx nob and C57BL/6 J. In Nyx nob mice, SLO revealed an atypical but variable amount of autofluorescent foci (AFF); SDOCT showed altered photoreceptor outer segment architecture. Naïve Nyx nob had significan
