The effects of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol were studied in 4 children with deficiency rickets and 22 children with D-resistant rickets, including patients with hereditary hypophosphatemic D-resistant rickets, "pseudo-deficiency" rickets, and rickets secondary to cystinosis or to tyrosinosis. Premature infants are a population prone to nutrient deficiencies. Because the early diet of these infants is entirely amenable to intervention, understanding the pathophysiology behind these deficiencies is important for both the neonatologists who care for them acutely and for pediatricians who are responsible for their care through childhood. This article reviews the normal accretion of nutrients in the fetus, discusses specific nutrient deficiencies that are exacerbated in the postnatal period, and identifies key areas for future research.

A Gram-positive-staining, aerobic, endospore-forming bacterium (Ca7(T)) was isolated from a bioreactor showing extensive phosphorus removal. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity comparisons, strain Ca7(T) was grouped in the genus Bacillus, most closely related to Bacillus nanhaiensis JSM 082006(T) (100 %), Bacillus barbaricus V2-BIII-A2(T) (99.2 %) and Bacillus arsenicus Con a/3(T) (97.7 %). OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of calcium supplementation on bone physiology in corticosteroid-free children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) by measuring serum and urinary bone-related hormones, minerals, and markers of bone formation and resorption.
METHODS: In this double-blind trial, patients were randomized to receive daily oral supplementation with 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D or with placebo and 400 IU of vitamin D for 24 months. The effect of calcium supplementation on bone physiology was determined periodically using markers of bone turnover.
