Emotional-Behavioral Dysregulation and Cortical Alterations in Pediatric Diffuse Midline Glioma With H3K27M Mutant: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Emotional-behavioral dysregulation (EBD) significantly affects the quality of life of glioma patients, but few studies report their psychopathological state and related cortical changes in children with diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) with H3K27M mutant, hindering the implementation of interventions. We aim to explore the relationships among H3K27M mutation, EBD, and cortical remodeling. METHODS: In total, 133 children were enrolled in Beijing during 2019-2024, including 66 children with DMGs with H3K27M mutant (DMGs-HM), 17 DMGs with H3K27M wild type (DMGs-HW), alon

Executive function performance and trauma exposure in a community sample of children.

OBJECTIVE: Though children exposed to familial violence are reported to have difficulties with a range of emotional and behavioral problems (e.g., lower school achievement) that implicate executive function (EF) deficits, relatively little research has specifically examined EF as a function of trauma exposure in children. METHODS: Based on parent report of children's exposure to potentially traumatic events, children (N=110; Age(Mean)=10.39) from an ethnically diverse community sample were compared across three trauma-exposure groups: familial trauma, non-familial trauma, and no trauma. Child

The Parent-Adolescent Relationship Context as a Moderator of Associations Between Secrecy and Disclosure to Parents and Adolescents' Adjustment.

INTRODUCTION: Stattin and Kerr's (2000) seminal work illustrated the importance of adolescent disclosure, rather than parents' monitoring behaviors, in predicting adolescent adjustment. Subsequent work differentiated secrecy from disclosure, yet most of the existing research has examined these constructs in early or mid-adolescence. This study examines two indices of the parent-child relationship-autonomy support and conflict frequency-as moderators of associations between secrecy/disclosure and internalizing and externalizing domains of adjustment in late adolescence. METHODS: Participants i

Self-Management Behaviors, Glycemic Control, and Metabolic Syndrome in Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes self-management and glycemic control are suboptimal among Chinese patients with Type 2 diabetes with a large proportion of patients identified with metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVES: Based on social cognitive theory, this study examines the effect of selected personal, behavioral, and environmental factors on self-management behaviors, glycemic control, metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 207 Chinese with Type 2 diabetes living in a suburban area of Beijing, China. Regression models were applied to examine the effect

Chronotype-related differences in childhood and adolescent aggression and antisocial behavior--a review of the literature.

Eveningness has been found to negatively affect adolescents' sleep and daytime functioning. Furthermore, eveningness is associated with greater impulsivity than morningness. Externalizing behavior could be chronotype-related, implying that the alteration of the circadian rhythm itself is connected to aspects of emotion and emotion regulation. The present study investigated chronotype-related differences in emotional and behavioral problems, especially aggression and antisocial behavior in children and adolescents. We conducted a comprehensive search via web of knowledge (MEDLINE, web of scienc

Eating patterns in a population-based sample of children aged 5 to 7 years: association with psychopathology and parentally perceived impairment.

OBJECTIVE: There is still a lack of research on childhood eating patterns and their correlates in relation to psychopathology and parentally perceived impact in general population samples. We aimed to determine which eating patterns were more likely to be identified as problematic by parents, and their impact and association with childhood psychopathology (emotional, behavioral, and pervasive developmental disorders) in a general population child cohort. METHODS: We collected data as part of the 5- to 7-year-old follow-up of a randomly derived subsample of the Copenhagen Child Cohort 2000. Of

Commentary: Aripiprazole: The Second Wave of the Second-generation Antipsychotics.

Three cases are presented describing unique clinical responses to aripiprazole in comparison with other second-generation antipsychotics taken by each patient. One case involved an adverse reaction of problem gambling behavior, the second an enhanced antipsychotic response in delusional disorder, and the third a reversal of weight gain that occurred while the patient continued taking olanzapine. Aripiprazole was the first of a subgroup of atypical antipsychotics that are mixed agonists and antagonists of dopamine, likely contributing to unusual responses in some patients.

Enhancing the effectiveness of a play intervention by abolishing the reinforcing value of stereotypy: a pilot study.

An alternating treatments design compared one condition in which a child with autism was allowed to engage in stereotypy freely prior to the intervention (abolishing operation component) to a second condition without the free-access period. Levels of stereotypy and problem behavior were lower and levels of functional play were higher in the condition with the abolishing operation component. These data provide preliminary support for the use of abolishing operations in interventions to increase the play skills of children with autism.

Interpersonal cognitive problem-solving among children with mild mental retardation.

In this study we sought to determine whether interpersonal cognitive problem-solving skills could distinguish adjusted from nonadjusted classroom behavior among children with mild mental retardation. Discriminant analyses indicated that, irrespective of age or IQ, adjusted children had a larger number of relevant solutions to common problems as well as a higher ratio of aggressive solutions. Findings suggest that cognitive interpersonal skills may be as important, if not even more important, for this population as for youngsters without mental retardation.

Update on the management of obesity.

This article updates a paper published in this journal more than a decade ago. We detail the ensuing decade's developments in the treatment of obesity, reviewing innovations, established techniques, and the current status of behavior modification. We evaluate newer developments, such as anorectic drugs, very low calorie diets, and intragastric balloon bezoars, and we describe other approaches to the treatment of obesity, such as residential and comprehensive outpatient programs. We conclude by recommending a multidisciplinary approach to this complex problem.

Medication for Behavior Modification in Birds.

The use of behavior modifying drugs may be considered in birds with behavior problems, especially those refractory to behavior modification therapy and environmental management. To accomplish behavior change, a variety of drugs can be used, including psychoactive drugs, hormones, antihistamines, analgesics, and anticonvulsants. Because their prescription to birds is off-label, these drugs are considered appropriate only when a sound rationale can be provided for their use. This requires a (correct) behavioral diagnosis to be established. In addition, regular monitoring and follow-up are warran

Interactions between Callous Unemotional Behaviors and Executive Function in Early Childhood Predict later Aggression and Lower Peer-liking in Late-childhood.

Callous unemotional (CU) behaviors are linked to aggression, behavior problems, and difficulties in peer relationships in children and adolescents. However, few studies have examined whether early childhood CU behaviors predict aggression or peer-rejection during late-childhood or potential moderation of this relationship by executive function. The current study examined whether the interaction of CU behaviors and executive function in early childhood predicted different forms of aggression in late-childhood, including proactive, reactive, and relational aggression, as well as how much childre

Behavioral approach with or without surgical intervention to the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome: a prospective randomized and non-randomized study.

This article describes the outcome of a behavioral approach with or without preceding surgical intervention in 48 women with the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome. In the first part of the study, 14 women with the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome were randomly assigned to one of two treatment programs: either a behavioral approach or a behavioral approach preceded by surgery. In the second part of the study, 34 women and their partners were given a choice of treatment. Follow-up data were gathered a mean of 3 and 2 1/2 years after treatment, respectively. In the randomized patient population, the inter

[Long-term follow-up on alcohol use in a big company after brief intervention by a company physician].

BACKGROUND: Many examinations have shown that brief medical interventions are useful when seeking to influence the drinking behavior of problem drinkers and alcohol-dependent subjects. The working environment is particularly useful when trying to influence problematic drinking behavior. Our report is about the long-term effects on alcoholic employees. METHODS: The drinking behavior of 100 employees was categorized according to WHO criteria. By motivational interviewing, the employees were asked to reduce their alcohol consumption or quit completely and then come back at a later control date.

mGluR5 antagonism attenuates methamphetamine reinforcement and prevents reinstatement of methamphetamine-seeking behavior in rats.

Addiction to methamphetamine is a significant public health problem, and there are currently no pharmacological agents that are approved for the treatment of addiction to this powerful psychostimulant. Chronic methamphetamine use leads to cognitive dysfunction as well as numerous psychiatric, neurological, and cardiovascular complications. There is a growing body of literature implicating an important role for glutamate neurotransmission in psychostimulant addiction. In the present study, we examined the effects of the selective type 5 metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR5) antagonist 3-((2-

Behavioral variability within the Brattleboro and Long-Evans rat strains.

Samples of genetically diabetes insipidus (DI) and normal (NO) rats were obtained from American suppliers (Rochester (RO)/DI and NO) and from the colony maintained at Charing Cross Hospital in London (Charing Cross (CC)/DI and NO) to test the hypothesis that the behavior of vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro (DI) and possibly normal Long-Evans rats may vary significantly between different colonies. DI rats of both colonies exhibit longer latencies to emerge into an open field than do NO rats. RO/DI and CC/DI rats acquire goal-approach behavior in a straight runway at similar rates. Sex Differences in the Synergistic Effects of Distress Intolerance and Anxiety Sensitivity on Alcohol Use and Related Problems Among Black Adults who Smoke.

OBJECTIVE: Although Black Americans have less alcohol use than non-Hispanic/Latine White Americans, they have comparable rates of binge drinking and alcohol use disorder. Moreover, Black Americans that smoke cigarettes appear at especially high risk for alcohol-related problems, highlighting a need to identify factors related to alcohol outcomes among Black Americans that smoke to better tailor treatments. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) and distress intolerance (DI) are associated with greater drinking and related problems. However, little research has tested the interactive effects of these risk fa
