Trampoline-associated injuries are more common in children in spring.

AIMS: Trampoline use is a popular pastime amongst children in New Zealand, and has many advantages for child development. However, recent reports claim that trampoline-associated injuries are still highly prevalent. In order to help prevent these injuries in the future, this study aims to provide more up-to-date epidemiological information in children, with emphasis on the time of year that injuries most commonly occur. METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out utilising a prospective maintained trauma database. The database was searched electronically for injuries involving trampolines

Nationwide Etoricoxib Injection Clinical Experience (NICE): Real-World Evidence in Indian Patients.

Introduction Pain is a major health issue globally. Etoricoxib, a highly selective COX-2 inhibitor, given orally, has been found to be efficacious and safe in the management of acute and chronic pain. Oral etoricoxib has been extensively studied; however, there is a lack of research exploring the use of etoricoxib via alternative routes, specifically intramuscular (IM) injection. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an innovative and novel formulation of IM etoricoxib injection 90 mg/mL in the management of patients with acute pain in India. Method This was a real-world

Change in diagnosis among orthopedists compared to non-orthopedists in the management of acute knee injuries.

OBJECTIVE: Uncertainty regarding diagnosis is associated with lower patient satisfaction and can lead to delays in definitive treatment and to inappropriate use of resources. We sought to compare change in diagnosis among orthopedists and non-orthopedists caring for a community based cohort of individuals with incident acute knee injuries. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal investigation of a population based cohort of Olmsted County residents with their first episode of acute knee injury occurring between January 1, 1993, and December 31, 1995. We reviewed the entire (inpatient and outpati

Ankle injuries in the Netherlands: Trends over 10-25 years.

Ankle injuries are a common health problem; data on ankle injury rates and time trends in the population at large are scarce. Our aim was to investigate the incidence of and time trends in population-based and emergency department-treated ankle injuries related to sports activities and other activities related to daily living. Data were obtained from one national survey on accidents and injuries (2000-2010) and one based on emergency department data (1986-2010). Linear regression was used to determine linear trends in ankle injuries per 1000 person-years. The number of ankle injuries related t

High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle Rollover Accidents and Injuries to U.S. Army Soldiers by Reported Occupant Restraint Use, 1992-2013.

OBJECTIVE: The high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) is a light military tactical vehicle. During Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S. Army modified the HMMWV into a combat vehicle by adding vehicle armor, which made the vehicle more difficult to control and more likely to roll over. Consequently, reports of fatal rollover accidents involving up-armored HMMWVs began to accumulate during the up-armoring period (August 2003 to April 2005). Furthermore, the lack of occupant restraint use prevalent in a predominantly young, male, and enlisted military popul

The Value of Strength as a Predictor of Musculoskeletal Injury in Canadian Armed Forces Basic Infantry Candidates.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) impact military organizations by threatening their operational readiness, warranting investigation into relevant factors to inform risk reduction strategies. While several self-reported and physical performance measures have been associated with MSKI among military personnel, few have been validated and none have been reported in Canadian basic infantry candidates. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between self-reported and physical performance measures and MSKI, and determine their validity as predictors of MSKI, in Canadia

Failed surgical management of partial thickness rotator cuff tears.

Some authors have recommended that rotator cuff tears <50% of tendon thickness be debrided and those involving >50% of the tendon be treated with miniopen repair. We hypothesize that if indications for selecting between simple debridement and tendon repair were appropriate, then both groups should have comparable outcomes. Thirty-nine patients with partial rotator cuff tears met inclusion criteria and were available for retrospective analysis. Twenty-six percent of patients who underwent debridement and 12.5% of patients who had mini-open repair had unsatisfactory results according to Neer's c

Clinical and structural results of arthroscopic repair of isolated subscapularis tear.

BACKGROUND: Even though the frequency of arthroscopic repair of isolated lesions of the subscapularis tendon has increased, few studies have presented clinical and anatomical outcomes of this treatment. We hypothesized that, after an arthroscopic repair, structural outcomes in the muscle have an influence on functional results. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on twenty-two patients who had undergone arthroscopic repair of an isolated tear of the subscapularis tendon and had a mean follow-up of thirty-six months. Patients were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively with use

Surgical repair of brachial plexus injury: a multinational survey of experienced peripheral nerve surgeons.

OBJECT: Brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) are often devastating events that lead to upper-extremity paralysis, rendering the limb a painful extraneous appendage. Fortunately, there are several nerve repair techniques that provide restoration of some function. Although there is general agreement in the medical community concerning which patients may benefit from surgical intervention, the actual repair technique for a given lesion is less clear. The authors sought to identify and better define areas of agreement and disagreement among experienced peripheral nerve surgeons as to the management of

The prognosis of ankle sprains.

We developed a new diagnostic tool for predicting the severity of ankle sprains just after injury. Since hard data obtained by diagnostic imaging techniques are still imperfect, we decided to use data from individual medical history and signs and symptoms that are part of the admission routine. During a three month-period data were collected on thirty-five patients with lateral ankle sprains who visited the first aid department of the University Hospital of Maastricht. Assessments took place at admission and at two and four weeks after injury. Assessors were the first-aid physician, a physioth

Are There Nationwide Socioeconomic and Demographic Disparities in the Use of Outpatient Orthopaedic Services?

BACKGROUND: Although disparities in the use of healthcare services in the United States have been well-documented, information examining sociodemographic disparities in the use of healthcare services (for example, office-based and emergency department [ED] care) for nonemergent musculoskeletal conditions is limited. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study was designed to answer two important questions: (1) Are there identifiable nationwide sociodemographic disparities in the use of either office-based orthopaedic care or ED care for common, nonemergent musculoskeletal conditions? (2) Is there a meanin
