BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by the soil-transmitted helminth Strongyloides stercoralis, recently included in the 2030 targets of the World Health Organization for the control of STHs. Assessment of infection prevalence is fundamental for decision-making about the implementation of control programs, but diagnostic assays to be applied in such context require evaluation. Seroassays based on recombinant antigens, which could be produced in a standardized and scalable manner, are particularly appealing for use in control programs. In this study, we per…

OBJECTIVE: To predict the structure and antigenic epitope of the Strongyloides stercoralis serine protease inhibitor 1 (Ss-SRPN-1) protein u … n expressed successfully, and this recombinant protein may be a potential vaccine candidate against strongyloidiasis.

Several important developments have occurred in recent years in the chemotherapy for and prophylaxis of parasitic infections. Although meflo … datid disease (echinococcosis), neurocysticercosis, and most intestinal nematode infections (except strongyloidiasis and trichuriasis). Liposomal amphotericin B is the first drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Strongyloides stercoralis may persist through autoinfection and is clinically important before corticosteroid exposure, but its relationship with airway obstruction in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) is uncertain. We examined whether routine-detected S. stercoralis infection was associated with spirometry-defined airway obstruction in children with SCD in French Guiana.
METHODS: This multicentre cross-sectional secondary analysis used an availability-based sample from a routine respiratory screening database. Eligible children aged 5-17 years had SCD, spirometry

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides westeri is found in the small intestine of young horses, mainly in foals up to about 16 weeks of age. The main source of infection for foals is through transmammary transmission, and foals can develop acute diarrhoea, weakness, dermatitis and respiratory signs. The epidemiology of S. westeri in Australia is largely unknown. Further, molecular techniques have never been employed for detection of S. westeri in horses. This pilot study aimed to assess the utility of a molecular phylogenetic method for the detection of S. westeri in the faeces of foals.
METHODS: Faecal s

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections are known to regulate cytokine responses in both pulmonary and latent tuberculosis infection. Whether helminth infections also modulate cytokine responses in extra-pulmonary tuberculosis, specifically tuberculous lymphadenitis (TBL), has not been examined thus far.
METHODOLOGY: Hence, to determine the cytokine profile in helminth-TBL coinfection, we measured the systemic and mycobacterial (TB)-antigen stimulated levels of Type 1, Type 2, Type 17, regulatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines in TBL individuals coinfected with or without Strongyloides stercoralis (S

Human co-infection by helminth species is frequent, but their consequences are mostly unknown. Here, we investigate the impact of Strongyloides venezuelensis co-infection on the immune response, schistosome burden, and the associated pathology of schistosomiasis in mice. Co-infection did not alter the schistosome parasite burden, but reduced the IL-4/IL-10 ratio during acute schistosomiasis, indicating induction of modulatory mechanisms. Simultaneous infection with S. venezuelensis and S. mansoni increased the liver concentration of IFN-γ and altered the Th2/Th1 balance, leading to great infil

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis infection is a neglected tropical disease which can lead to severe symptoms and even death in immunosuppressed people. Unfortunately, its diagnosis is hampered by the lack of a gold standard, as the sensitivity of traditional parasitological tests (including microscopic examination of stool samples and coproculture) is low. Hence, alternative diagnostic methods, such as molecular biology techniques (mostly polymerase chain reaction, PCR) have been implemented. However, there are discrepancies in the reported accuracy of PCR.
METHODOLOGY: A systematic revi

A 50-year-old male immigrant from Ethiopia presented for consultation after 3 years of hematochezia/melena requiring > 25 units of blood transfusions. Physical examination revealed severe proximal muscle wasting and weakness, central obesity, proptosis, and abdominal striae, accompanied by eosinophilia, elevated hemoglobin A1c, elevated 24-hour urinary cortisol, lack of suppression of 8 am cortisol levels by 1 mg dexamethasone, and inappropriately elevated random adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) level. Histopathological examination of gastrointestinal biopsies showed large numbers of Strongy

A range of immune parameters was measured during a primary infection of Strongyloides ratti in its natural rat host. The immune parameters measured were interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interferon-gamma from both the spleen and mesenteric lymph node (MLN) cells; parasite-specific immunoglobulin G(1)(IgG(1)), IgG(2a) and IgG(2b) in serum and in intestinal tissue; parasite-specific IgG and total IgE in serum; parasite-specific and total IgA in intestinal tissue and rat mast cell protease II in intestinal tissue. Parasitic nematodes are important pathogens of humans and other animals. The genus Strongyloides has both a parasitic and a free-living adult generation. S. ratti infections of its rat host are negatively affected by the host immune response, such that a month after infection, worms are lost from the hosts. Here we have investigated the changes in parasite gene expression that occur as the anti-S. ratti immune pressure increases. Existing S. ratti expressed sequence tags were used to construct a microarray consisting of 2227 putative genes. This was probed with cDNA prepared from parasites sub

Strongyloides stercoralis is present worldwide and can cause hyperinfection in patients on long-term immunosuppressive doses of steroids, as is sometimes the case for patients treated for leprosy reactions. Strongyloides hyperinfection can present with ileus, as is discussed in this case report. Physicians, including surgeons, should be aware of this entity in order to avoid an unnecessary laparotomy. Though patients may survive if diagnosed at an early stage, strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome has a mortality rate of 87% and prevention is therefore of utmost importance.
