Ten-year longitudinal study of the effect of impulse noise exposure from gunshot on inner ear function.

This longitudinal study investigated how chronic gunshot noise exposure affects cochlear and saccular function in police officers who engaged in regular target shooting practice using dual protection (ear plugs plus earmuffs) for >10 years. In 1997, 20 male police officers underwent audiometry before and two weeks after shooting. Twelve of the original subjects were re-examined by audiometry coupled with vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) test in 2007. Significant deterioration of mean hearing thresholds at frequencies of 500 Hz through 4000 Hz was noted ten years later, affecting bot

Effects of buccal shields on mandibular dental arch parameters: a clinical and cephalometric study.

The lip bumper is a vestibular functional appliance designed to extend bilaterally between the mandibular buccal tubes and contact the inner surface of the lower lip and cheeks. It functions to eliminate the pressure on the incisors, canines, and premolars, and to transmit distally directed forces to the molars. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effects of the buccal shield modification of the lip bumper design on various mandibular dental arch parameters, as well as on the inclination of the mandibular incisors. Included in the present study were 44 consecutively treate

Anterior crowding--just an esthetic problem?

BACKGROUND: One frequent late sequel of frontal crowding is the development of gingival recessions manifesting themselves especially at rotated anterior teeth. MATERIAL: This correlation is discussed with regard to the literature and to the authors' own clinical findings and experimental studies. RESULTS: According to present-day knowledge the following statements can be made: In cases with frontal crowding the tangential stiffening of the anterior teeth is inadequate. Thus translatory and rotational force components resulting from the elastic deformation of the mandible under functional loa

HCG11 up-regulation induced by ELK4 suppressed proliferation in vestibular schwannoma by targeting miR-620/ELK4.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a kind of benign tumor deriving from the acoustic nerve sheath. Substantial long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were illustrated to have crucial roles in multiple cancers. However, few lncRNAs were elucidated in VS. METHODS: HCG11, miR-620 and ELK4 expression were tested by RT-qPCR. Gain-of-function experiments were conducted to confirm the effect of HCG11 on VS. RESULTS: HCG11 possessed a low expression in VS cell lines. Overexpression of HCG11 repressed cell proliferation but accelerated apoptosis of VS cells. Moreover, we identified ELK4 stimulated the

Stance duration under sensory conflict conditions in patients with hemiplegia.

Standing balance was evaluated in ten subjects with hemiplegia using a sensory organization balance test (SOT). The SOT is a timed balance test which evaluates somatosensory, visual, and vestibular function for maintenance of upright posture. The duration of bilateral stance was assessed using combinations of three visual and two support surface conditions. Stance time was measured with eyes open, eyes closed, and with each patient wearing a visual dome to produce inaccurate visual information. The support surface conditions involved stance on a hard flat floor followed by attempted stance on

A novel homozygous missense variant identified in the myosin VIIA motor domain of a Moroccan patient with usher syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Usher syndrome 1 (USH1) is the most severe subtype of Usher syndrome characterized by severe sensorineural hearing impairment, retinitis pigmentosa, and vestibular areflexia. USH1 is usually induced by variants in MYO7A, a gene that encodes the myosin-VIIa protein. Myosin-VIIA is effectively involved in intracellular molecular traffic essential for the proper function of the cochlea, the retinal photoreceptors, and the retinal pigmented epithelial cells. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we report a new homozygous missense variant (NM_000260.4: c.1657 C > T p.(His553Tyr)) in MYO

[Visual dependence after recent stroke].

INTRODUCTION: After chronic stroke, inability to use pertinent somatosensory or vestibular information have been described. The aim of the study was to determine whether visual dependence occurred early after stroke before rehabilitation. METHOD: Thirty patients with recent hemiplegia (16 right and 14 left hemispheric stroke) performed the rod and frame test (RFT). Patients were asked to adjust the rod to the vertical position under 3 conditions: basically, with a frame tilted 18 degrees to the right and then with the frame tilted to the left. Bias in each condition (mean, SD) was recorded an

Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling in inner ear development, injury, and regeneration: evidence synthesis and the biomechanical brake hypothesis.

Sensorineural hearing loss in mammals is essentially irreversible. Mature cochlear hair cells, once lost, do not regenerate. Non-mammalian vertebrates retain this ability, but in the mammalian organ of Corti, supporting cells lose their proliferative and transdifferentiation competence after birth. Reactivation of classical developmental pathways has also shown limited success in the adult cochlea. In this review, we first synthesize published evidence on Hippo-Yes-associated protein(YAP)/transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) signaling in the inner ear, including studies of

Jendrassik maneuver facilitates cVEMP amplitude: some preliminary observations.

BACKGROUND: The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP) is an acoustically driven electrophysiological measure of saccular and inferior nerve function that requires tonic sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) activity in order to be elicited. The cVEMP is gaining increased interest in the clinical and research communities based on the anatomical specificity it adds to vestibular test batteries, because it is noninvasive, and since it can be performed with instrumentation commonly found in audiology clinics worldwide. PURPOSE: Because maintaining a constant level of tonic background e

Assessment of balance control mechanisms in patient populations using perturbation-based modeling: a narrative review with clinical implications.

Clinical assessments of balance often rely on indirect measures that offer limited insights into the underlying sensorimotor control mechanisms. Consequently, there is a need for standardized and objective quantification of balance control mechanisms. Research over the past 20 years has demonstrated that Central Sensorimotor Integration (CSMI)-type tests can reliably identify functionally relevant parameters accounting for experimentally observed dynamics of the balance control system. However, the complexity and the lack of standardization of this approach have led to heterogeneous methodolog
