Three years ago, a prospective, randomized, collaborative study investigating the effectiveness of vitrectomy for chronic aphakic cystoid macular edema in eyes with vitreous adherent to the cataract wound but without an intraocular lens was started. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitreous surgery on the corneal endothelium.
METHODS: A total of 113 eyes undergoing pars plana vitrectomy for variable indications at a tertiary care center were included prospectively. PURPOSE: To compare limbal and pars plana silicone oil removal (SOR) in aphakic eyes and to evaluate the acute effect of silicone oil flow to the corneal endothelium.
METHODS: Sixteen aphakic patients with silicone oil endotamponade requiring SOR were recruited for this prospective study and randomly scheduled for limbal or pars plana SOR. In the past two years 29 patients (ages 9 months to 15 years) received 37 epikeratophakia grafts. 91.1 percent of the original surgeries were successful.
