Cefditoren pivoxil.

Cefditoren pivoxil is an orally absorbed prodrug that is rapidly hydrolysed by intestinal esterases to the microbiologically active cephalosporin cefditoren. Cefditoren has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including common respiratory and skin pathogens. Cefditoren has shown excellent in vitro activity against the Gram-positive pathogens penicillin-susceptible and -intermediate Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus. Cefditoren was inactive against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. Of the important Gr

Respiratory pathogens: assessing resistance patterns in Europe and the potential role of grepafloxacin as treatment of patients with infections caused by these organisms.

Although most respiratory tract infections (RTI) are caused by viruses, various bacteria, particularly Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, are common causes of community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, otitis media and sinusitis. Empirical antibiotic therapy of patients with RTI must take account of the increasing prevalence of resistance among the predominant pathogens. Europe-wide susceptibility surveillance studies have revealed that resistance to penicillin and macrolides is highly prevalent among isolates of S. pneumon

Air pollution and childhood respiratory health: exposure to sulfate and ozone in 10 Canadian rural communities.

This study was designed to examine differences in the respiratory health status of preadolescent school children, aged 7-11 years, who resided in 10 rural Canadian communities areas of moderate and low exposure to regional sulfate and ozone pollution. Five of the communities were located in central Saskatchewan, a low-exposure region, and five were located in southwestern Ontario, an area with moderately elevated exposures resulting from long-range atmospheric transport of polluted air masses. In this cross-sectional study, the child's respiratory symptoms and illness history were evaluated us

Study on the mechanism of Sangbaipi Decoction in treating acute lung injury via the inflammasome NLRP3 signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sangbaipi Decoction (SBPD) has been used as a therapy for lung-related diseases in China for hundreds of years. It is commonly applied in the treatment of pulmonary diseases such as acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and acute attack of chronic bronchitis. However, the anti-inflammatory mechanism underlying its therapeutic effect on acute lung injury (ALI) remains unclear. RESEARCH PURPOSE: Under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine theory, this study aims to explore the therapeutic effect and mechanism of SBPD on ALI, so

Anti-inflammatory mechanisms of eucalyptol rich Eucalyptus globulus essential oil alone and in combination with flurbiprofen.

Inflammation is the core contributor in the pathogenesis of various acute and chronic illness including appendicitis, bronchitis, arthritis, cancer and neurological diseases. NSAIDs, commonly used medications for inflammatory diseases, on prolonged use cause GI bleeding, ulcers and many more issues. Plant-based therapeutic agents including essential oils in combination with low-dose synthetic drugs have been shown to produce synergistic effects and reduce complications of synthetic drugs. This study was designed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-pyretic properties of Eucaly

[Suberosis: involvement of bronchoalveolar +mastocytes in the genesis of interstitial involvement].

UNLABELLED: Suberosis--the lung disease suffered by cork industry workers--may present in the form of either hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) or obstructive pulmonary disease (OPD) with asthma-like symptoms or chronic bronchitis. Mast cells play an important role in pulmonary inflammation and are particularly implicated in the rapid release of mediators in bronchoconstriction and the production of cytokines and mediators of fibroblast activity. Increased numbers of mast cells are present in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in interstitial lung diseases, suggesting that these cells also part

Green space and early childhood development: a systematic review.

Background The urban environment presents significant health challenges for children, such as discouraging physical exercise and increasing exposure to air pollution, excessive noise and higher temperatures. Reducing exposures to these negative environmental factors can have great benefits on a child's well-being and lower their risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. There is increasing evidence that suggests that the presence of urban green space can offer benefits to human health and well-being. While studies have reported the impact green space exposure has on the individual hea

Levofloxacin. Its use in infections of the respiratory tract, skin, soft tissues and urinary tract.

UNLABELLED: Levofloxacin, the optically pure levorotatory isomer of ofloxacin, is a fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. Like other fluoroquinolones, it acts on bacterial topoisomerase and has activity against a broad range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Levofloxacin also appears to have improved activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae compared with ciprofloxacin or ofloxacin. Levofloxacin distributes well and achieves high levels in excess of plasma concentrations in many tissues (e.g., lung, skin, prostate). High oral bioavailability allows switching from intravenous to oral

Ozone- and endotoxin-induced mucous cell metaplasias in rat airway epithelium: novel animal models to study toxicant-induced epithelial transformation in airways.

Mucous (goblet) cell proliferation and hypersecretion of airway mucus are important characteristics of human respiratory disorders, especially chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis. These changes in secretory patterns also occur in animals experimentally exposed to chemical irritants such as ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and cigarette smoke. The cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in irritant-induced mucous cell metaplasia (MCM; transformation of airway epithelium, normally devoid of mucous cells, to a secretory epithelium containing numerous mucous cells) are still unclear. We use

Natural killer T cells are dispensable in the development of allergen-induced airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammation and remodelling in a mouse model of chronic asthma.

Natural killer T (NK T) cells have been shown to play an essential role in the development of allergen-induced airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and/or airway inflammation in mouse models of acute asthma. Recently, NK T cells have been reported to be required for the development of AHR in a virus induced chronic asthma model. We investigated whether NK T cells were required for the development of allergen-induced AHR, airway inflammation and airway remodelling in a mouse model of chronic asthma. CD1d-/- mice that lack NK T cells were used for the experiments. In the chronic model, AHR, eosinoph

Blood inflammatory phenotypes were associated with distinct clinical expressions of asthma in adults from a large population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is an inflammatory heterogeneous disease. Asthma inflammatory phenotypes based on blood eosinophil and neutrophil counts have never been identified and characterized in population-based studies. METHODS: Adults with current asthma and available blood eosinophil and neutrophil counts from the French population-based CONSTANCES cohort were included. Current asthma was defined by reports of asthma attacks, symptoms or treatments in the last 12 months. Inflammatory phenotypes were based on low (L) and high (H) blood (B) eosinophil (E) (LBE/HBE: </⩾0·25 × 109/L, respectively) an
