The Edinburgh Register of the Newborn 1964-1968 and the Edinburgh Scoliosis Clinic 1964-1971 have been used to establish the population frequency in the city of the idiopathic forms of talipes equinovarus and calcaneovalgus, metatarsus varus, congenital dislocation of the hip, and infantile scoliosis. A review of disorders with a known genetic basis which occur in orthopaedic practice is presented. Four groups of skeletal dysplasias are briefly described (short-limbed dwarfism, metaphyseal disorders, disorders of increased bone density and the storage diseases). Congenital talipes equinovarus is the most common deformity of the lower limb. The adequate treatment of clubfeet is still a challenge for orthopaedic surgeons and requires well-founded knowledge of pathoanatomy and established therapeutical options. This refresher, in addition to pathoanatomical fundamentals, provides an update on diagnostic and therapeutical facilities. By reviewing the results of conservative and surgical treatment concepts and their discussion it shall contribute to optimal individual management of congenital talipes equinovarus.

Genotypes of 2 SNPs(rs592121 and rs1135056) within COL9A1 gene in 84 ICTEV nuclear pedigrees were analyzed by restriction fragment length polymorphism and DNA sequencing. We used a combined cuboid/cuneiform osteotomy to treat residual adductus deformity in idiopathic and secondary club feet. The mean follow-up for 27 feet (22 idiopathic, four arthrogrypotic and one related to amniotic band syndrome) was 5.0 years (2.0 to 9.8). All healed uneventfully except for one early wound infection. No further surgery was required in the 22 idiopathic club feet but four of five with secondary deformity needed further surgery.
