Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a persistent inflammatory dermatosis of unknown etiology with a predilection for the vulva, where it is a risk factor for carcinoma. We performed a clinicopathologic study on 121 cases of vulvar LS and 20 of extragenital LS, and we reviewed 49 vulvectomy specimens with LS to define morphologic findings, identify the earliest lesions, and correlate outcomes with histologic findings. The vulvar LS lesions were pruritic/burning, white/red, ill-defined patches predominately affecting the labia, perineum, introitus, and perianal region. The extragenital LS lesions were asym

BACKGROUND: The cause of the chronic inflammation in atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC), the ocular manifestation of atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome, is largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possibility that microorganisms may be important in the inflammatory activity in AKC.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with AKC participated in the study. The presence of aerobic bacteria and fungi was related to the severity of clinical signs, the numbers of inflammatory cells in tears and conjunctival biopsies, and the concentration of various cytokines in tears. In addition, serological evidence fo

We have analyzed the in situ distribution of immune cells in the conjunctival biopsy specimens obtained from patients with active vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). We used immunohistochemical techniques and a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies. Our data point to a complex immunopathogenesis of the disease. Distinct components involved in IgE-mediated immune mechanisms, as well as humoral and cell mediated immune mechanisms were detected in the conjunctival tissues. In addition, we investigated the presence and distribution of adhesion molecules. In the normal conjunctiva, intercell

The importance of IgE in airway inflammation and development of AHR in allergen-sensitized mice has been compared and contrasted in different models of sensitization and challenge. Using different modes of sensitization in normal and genetically manipulated mice after anti-IgE treatment, we have been able to distinguish the role of IgE under these different conditions. Striking differences in the three sensitization protocols were delineated in terms of the role of allergen-specific IgE, extent of eosinophilic airway inflammation, and development of AHR (Table 1). The highest levels of IgE and

Giant papillae formation along with corneal damage in vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is primarily mediated by type 2 inflammation and eosinophils. Corneal keratocytes are the primary cellular source of eotaxin at the ocular surface, facilitating eosinophil migration to the cornea. We aimed to elucidate the role of the transcription factor signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) in eotaxin expression by corneal fibroblasts and to evaluate the inhibitory effects of rebamipide-a mucin secretagogue with reported therapeutic potential in VKC-on this pathway. Human corneal fibr
