Prevalence and psychosocial correlates of perinatal depression: a cohort study from urban Pakistan.

Depression around childbirth is common in low income countries. The aim of this study was to examine the factors associated with persistence of depression from the antenatal to the postnatal period in urban Pakistan. A total of 1,357 pregnant women in their third trimester attending the antenatal clinic were included in the study. From these, 763 mothers who delivered at the study maternity home were reassessed after 3 months of childbirth. Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was administered to measure depression in both the antenatal and the postnatal periods. Psychological distress,

Postnatal depression across countries and cultures: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression seems to be a universal condition with similar rates in different countries. However, anthropologists question the cross-cultural equivalence of depression, particularly at a life stage so influenced by cultural factors. AIMS: To develop a qualitative method to explore whether postnatal depression is universally recognised, attributed and described and to enquire into people's perceptions of remedies and services for morbid states of unhappiness within the context of local services. METHOD: The study took place in 15 centres in 11 countries and drew on three

The management of postnatal depression.

At least one in ten women experiences depression in the weeks or months after the birth of a baby. While many recover spontaneously within a few months, one-third to one-half still have features of depression 6 months after delivery, and some go on to develop a chronic or recurrent mood disorder. Depression in the early postnatal months can have important effects on the mother and her baby, and on other family relationships. Here, we discuss the management of postnatal depression, concentrating on the treatment of women with non-psychotic illness.

A measurement model of perinatal stressors: identifying risk for postnatal emotional distress in mothers of high-risk infants.

A measurement model of perinatal stressors was first evaluated for reliability and then used to identify risk factors for postnatal emotional distress in high-risk mothers. In Study 1, six measures (gestational age of the baby, birthweight, length of the baby's hospitalization, a postnatal complications rating for the infant, and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 min) were obtained from chart reviews of preterm births at two different hospitals. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the six measures could be accounted for by three factors: (a) Infant Maturity, (b) Apgar Ratings, and (c) Complicatio

[Marital violence after birth].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to estimate the prevalence of marital violence during the year after childbirth in France. METHODS: a survey has been carried out in three maternity units among primipara and secondipara women in 1993-1994. The women were interviewed in the three days after the delivery and they received a postal questionnaire 5 and 12 months later. The analysis includes 706 women. RESULTS: the prevalence of marital violence during the 12 months after childbirth is equal to 4.1% (2.6%-5.6%). This percentage is higher among women living an unstable relationship with their partner or

[Puerperal pathology].

The puerperium is the period from the end of labour to the appearance of the first menstruation. The possible pathologies that can occur in this period of time are the most frequent cause of maternal mortality even in our setting. The pathology of lactation includes failure of breastfeeding, cracks in the nipple, mammary ingurgitation and puerperal mastitis. Puerperal infection is a frequent obstetric complication although clinical guidelines for prophylaxis have considerably reduced its incidence. The vascular pathology of the puerperium includes clinical features of great seriousness, repres

Risks of adverse perinatal outcomes in relation to maternal depressive symptoms: A prospective cohort study in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Evidence gaps remain regarding the influence of prenatal psychosocial factors on adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to evaluate relationships between psychosocial factors and adverse perinatal outcomes among Kenyan women. METHODS: We analysed data from a prospective cohort study enrolling HIV-negative women in pregnancy (NCT03070600) in 20 antenatal clinics in Western Kenya. Study nurses assessed depressive symptoms using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), social support using the Medical Outcomes Survey scale (MOS-

Mental health of adolescents associated with sexual and reproductive outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature on the mental health of adolescents associated with sexual and reproductive outcomes, and compare the mental health outcomes with that of other age groups. METHODS: We searched seven databases for relevant peer-reviewed articles published between 1 January 2010 and 25 April 2019. Our inclusion criteria required that the study included age-disaggregated data on adolescents, and focused and assessed mental health outcomes associated with pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections. We extracted data on the specific health event, the mental hea

Mother-infant bonding is not associated with feeding type: a community study sample.

BACKGROUND: Bonding refers to emotions and cognitions towards one's infant. Breastfeeding is believed to facilitate bonding, yet only a handful of studies have empirically tested this assertion. This study aimed to confirm whether a positive association between breastfeeding and bonding exists and whether breastfeeding may be protective against the negative consequences of mood and sleep disturbances on bonding. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was administered to a convenience sample of Israeli mothers of infants ages 1-9 months. The main outcome measures were breastfeeding history, bonding

Long-term risk of mental health problems in women experiencing preterm birth: a longitudinal study of 29 mothers.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported significantly higher stress levels, both short and long terms, among mothers giving preterm birth compared with mothers giving birth at term. Stress, however, is a psychological phenomenon that may present as anxiety, depression and/or trauma reactions. In this study, the long-term mental health outcomes and the prevalence of anxiety, depression and trauma reactions in women experiencing preterm birth were explored. Interactional, main effect variables and predictors were identified. METHODS: Twenty-nine mothers of 35 premature children born before th

A technology-enabled service for perinatal collaborative care models: A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mental health conditions are common yet frequently undertreated. Perinatal collaborative care models improve access to evidence-based care but face implementation challenges related to workflow efficiency and scalability. Digital innovations may enhance care delivery and sustainability within perinatal collaborative care models. This study evaluated whether a technology-enabled service, designed to support and streamline care manager workflow in a perinatal collaborative care model, improves depression and anxiety symptoms, patient satisfaction, and engagement compared

Maternal Prenatal Depressive Symptoms and Fetal Growth During the Critical Rapid Growth Stage.

IMPORTANCE: Fetal growth in the critical rapid growth stage (CRGS) before delivery, approximately between 30 to 37 gestational weeks, carries significant implications for subsequent overweight, obesity, and arterial health. Previous evidence has demonstrated the association between maternal depressive symptoms and fetal growth trajectories from early to late pregnancy, but there remains limited understanding of the association of these symptoms with the longitudinal fetal growth change within the CRGS. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between maternal depressive symptoms and fetal gr

Study protocol for improving mental health during pregnancy: a randomized controlled low-intensity m-health intervention by midwives at primary care centers.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related anxiety and depression has received considerable attention worldwide. Mental health problems in pregnant women already since early weeks of gestation may have important consequences to the fetus. The necessity for more effective health care pathways, including some early interventions that reduce the overall burden of the childbearing situation appears a key factor for a successful birth and care of the baby. The few studies focalized in interventions, are focused on delivery and postpartum, without taking into account the whole maternity process. Current literatu

Reduction in physical activity significantly increases depression and anxiety in the perinatal period: a longitudinal study based on a self-report digital assessment tool.

PURPOSE: Physical activity can reduce pregnancy-related complications and contributes substantially to improving maternal mental health. A reduction in activity encompassing exercise and daily household tasks throughout the course of pregnancy increases the risk of depression and anxiety. The following research examines the longitudinal interaction between exercise, general physical activity, and mental health outcomes in pregnant women. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study was conducted at the maternity departments of two major university hospitals in Germany. Self-reported data of 5

Perinatal depression and omega-3 fatty acids: a Mendelian randomisation study.

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous studies investigating the association between omega-3 fatty acids (FAs) and depression, with mixed findings. We propose an approach which is largely free from issues such as confounding or reverse causality, to investigate this relationship using observational data from a pregnancy cohort. METHODS: The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort collected information on FA levels from antenatal blood samples and depressive symptoms at several time points during pregnancy and the postnatal period. Conventional epidemiological analyses we

Maternal attachment style and depression associated with childbirth: preliminary results from a European and US cross-cultural study.

BACKGROUND: Insecure attachment style relates to major depression in women, but its relationship to depression associated with childbirth is largely unknown. A new UK-designed measure, the Attachment Style Interview (ASI), has potential for cross-cultural use as a risk marker for maternal disorder. AIMS: To establish there liability of the ASI across centres, its stability over a 9-month period, and its associations with social context and major or minor depression. METHOD: The ASI was used by nine centres antenatally on 204 women, with 174 followed up 6 months postnatally. Interrater reliab
