OBJECTIVE: The aim: The purpose of this study is to analyze the frequency and structure of parasitic lesion in women with reproductive health disorders.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The immune-enzyme method tested immunoglobulins IgG to ascaris, lamblia, toxocara. Determination of the presence of pinworm eggs (sticky tape and perianal scrape method) and ascarid (methods of K.Cato, F.Fueleborna and E.S.Schulman).
RESULTS: Results: In women with complicated obstetric anamnesis, parasitic invasions occurred in (52.3 ± 5.0)% (Χ² = 34.9, p <0.01; 95% CI = 42.5-62.1). Enterobiasis

BACKGROUND: Invasive amebiasis is not frequently seen in the United States. It is associated with considerable morbidity in patients residing in or traveling to endemic areas. We report a case series of patients with amebic colitis in a United States-Mexico border city to alert physicians to the varied clinical manifestations.
CASE PRESENTATION: Nine patients were diagnosed with amebic colitis. Mean age was 56 (38-83), 6 were males, and all were Hispanic. Common symptoms were diarrhea (56 %), hematochezia (33 %) and abdominal bloating (11 %). The diagnosis of amebic colitis was established in

We have examined the role of inflammatory cells, ischemia and serum complement on the development of acute experimental amoebic liver abscess in hamsters (AEALAH). In hamsters made leukopenic by whole body radiation (800 rad) and daily intraperitoneal glycogen injections, the absence of inflammatory cells and liver tissue damage surrounding the parasites resulted in their rapid (24 h) disappearance from the liver, which showed no lesions. Focal liver ischemia, always present in control AEALAH with inflammation and tissue destruction, was reproduced in radiated hamsters by injection of amoebae

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis caused by the protozoan species Entamoeba histolytica rarely develops into fulminant amoebic colitis (FAC), but when it does, it shows an aggressive clinical course including colonic perforation, necrotizing colitis, and high mortality. Surgical treatment for FAC patients should be carried out urgently. However, even after surgery, the mortality rate can be 40-50%. Although FAC is one of the most unfavorable surgical diseases with a poor prognosis, there are a few reports on the perioperative diagnosis and management of FAC based on autopsy findings. We herein report the…

In people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), several complaints related to the gastrointestinal system, mainly diarrhea can be determined. In our study, we aimed to detect the existence of intestinal parasites with conventional methods based on microscopy and with molecular methods based on multiplex-PCR among 90 anti-retroviral treatment (ART) naive or ART adherent HIV/AIDS cases. The existence of Giardia spp., Blastocystis spp., Entamoeba histolytica, Dientamoeba spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. were searched in stool samples and the relation with the existence of these parasites a…

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a common intestinal parasite with worldwide distribution but the distribution of Blastocystis and its subtypes in East Africa is largely unknown. In this study, we investigate the distribution of Blastocystis subtypes in Zanzibar, Tanzania and report the prevalence of intestinal parasites using both molecular methods and microscopy.
METHODS: Stool samples were collected from both diarrhoeic and non-diarrhoeic outpatients in Zanzibar. In addition to microscopy, real-time PCR for Blastocystis, Entamoeba histolytica and E. dispar, Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium…

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The most common extraintestinal manifestation of Entamoeba histolytica, the agent of amebiasis, is a hepatic abscess. This infection is common throughout the world and can be associated with life-threatening consequences. Given the often nonspecific nature of the complaints related to an amebic abscess, a retrospective review of patients with confirmed disease was done to recognize the most common patterns of presentation.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted of all patients with confirmed amebic liver abscess over a 5-year period. All available emergency depart…

The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica causes amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess, diseases associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. E. histolytica infection appears to involve the initial attachment of amebic trophozoites to intestinal epithelial cells, followed by lysis of these cells and subsequent invasion into the submucosa. A recent in vitro study (L. Eckmann, S. L. Reed, J. R. Smith, and M. F. Kagnoff, J. Clin. Invest. 96:1269-1279, 1995) demonstrated that incubation of E. histolytica trophozoites with epithelial cell lines results in epithelial cell pr…

Amoebic liver abscess is a common disease, especially in endemic areas, but it is a rare cause of inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction, with only a few cases appearing in the literature. We report three cases of amoebic liver abscess complicated with obstruction of the IVC and which responded to conservative treatment or radiological intervention.
