BACKGROUND: The use of emergency medical services in Germany has significantly increased, particularly for nonemergency cases. This issue becomes especially relevant for nursing homes, where staff is confronted with resource shortages and organizational challenges, making emergency medical services involvement a common course of action. This leads to potentially avoidable hospitalizations for nursing home residents and exposes them to severe health risks, such as nosocomial infections. To address this, we developed the Optimal@NRW project, implementing an innovative intersectoral telemedicine

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission is primarily limited to tropical regions where environmental conditions are conducive for the survival of Plasmodium parasites and Anopheles mosquitoes. Adequate rainfall provides breeding sites, while suitable temperatures facilitate vector mosquito life-cycles and parasite development. Evaluating the efficacy of vector control interventions is crucial to determine their effectiveness in reducing malaria transmission. The aim of this study was to explore how these factors affect transmission dynamics at varying levels of vector control efficacy. METHODS: We de

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, cholera has remained a global public health challenge, with Africa bearing a disproportionate share of its burden. Uganda has experienced a notable decline in the incidence of cholera over the past decade, largely attributed to intensified public health efforts, including oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaigns, strengthened surveillance, and targeted WASH interventions. This study seeks to provide information on spatial clustering patterns of cholera incidence and evaluate how these patterns varied across selected outbreak years. METHODS: District-level

Since farmers in the inland valley region of the Niger Delta mostly rely on experience rather than empirical evidence when it comes to irrigation, flood irrigation being the most popular technique, the region's agricultural sector needs more efficient water management. In order to better understand the intricate hydrodynamics of water flow through the soil subsurface, this study aimed to develop a soil column laboratory experimental setup for soil water infiltration. The objective was to measure the soil water content and soil matric potential at 10 cm intervals to study the soil water charact

The Candida Genome Database (CGD; www.candidagenome.org) is unique in being both a model organism database and a fungal pathogen database. As a fungal pathogen database, CGD hosts locus pages for 5 species of the best-studied pathogenic fungi in the Candida group. As a model organism database, the species Candida albicans serves as a model both for other Candida spp. and for non-Candida fungi that form biofilms and undergo routine morphogenic switching from the planktonic form to the filamentous form, which is not done by other model yeasts. As pathogenic Candida species have become increasing

BACKGROUND: As extreme events such as drought and flood are projected to increase in frequency and intensity under climate change, there is still large missing evidence on how drought exposure potentially impacts mortality among young children. This study aimed to investigate the association between drought and risk of infant mortality in Africa, a region highly vulnerable to climate change that bears the heaviest share of the global burden.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this cross-sectional study, we obtained data on infant mortality in 34 African countries during 1992-2019 from the Demographic a

INTRODUCTION: Brucella spp. infections in livestock continue to pose significant threats to public and animal health, as well as to local economies. In the European Union, Brucella abortus, which primarily affects cattle and buffaloes, has been successfully eradicated in some Member States and across northern and central Italy through mandatory eradication and control programmes. However, some provinces in southern Italy, including Caserta and Salerno (Campania Region), remain affected, while in other provinces, as in Isernia (Molise Region), brucellosis has temporarily re-emerged.

The existence of coastal ecosystems depends on their ability to gain sediment and keep pace with sea level rise. Similar to other coastal areas, Northeast Florida (United States) is experiencing rapid population growth, climate change, and shifting wetland communities. Rising seas and more severe storms, coupled with the intensification of human activities, can modify the biophysical environment, thereby increasing coastal exposure to storm-induced erosion and inundation. Using the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve as a case study, we analyzed the distribution of coas

Shallow groundwater (GW), defined as the water table of unconfined or perched aquifers that is near enough to the land surface to influence the vadose zone and the surface soil moisture, impacts land surface water, energy, and carbon cycles by providing additional moisture to the root zone via capillary fluxes. Although the interactions of shallow GW and the terrestrial land surface are widely recognized, incorporating shallow GW into the land surface, climate, and agroecosystem models is not yet possible due to the lack of groundwater data. Groundwater systems are affected by various factors,

A 5-year survey of public access surface waters in an agricultural region of the Central California Coast was done to assess the prevalence of the foodborne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. In nature, L. monocytogenes lives as a saprophyte in soil and water, which are reservoirs for contamination of preharvest produce. Moore swabs were deployed biweekly in lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers during 2011 to 2016. L. monocytogenes was recovered in 1,224 of 2,922 samples, resulting in 41.9% prevalence. Multiple subtypes were isolated from 97 samples, resulting in 1,323 L. monocytogenes isolates. Pr

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is considered a neglected zoonosis associated with infrastructure problems and low socioeconomic status, particularly slums. Since the disease is mainly transmitted in urban settings by rat urine, this risk factor may be important predictor tool for prompt control and effective prevention at the local level in urban endemic areas. Accordingly, the present study aimed to propose an early spatial predictor tool for human leptospirosis in urban settings, to test the methodology of molecular methods for assessing Leptospira spp. in trapped rats, and report associated envi

Use of pesticides or insecticides can be highly toxic to aquatic life forms due to leaching and agricultural runoff, rains or flood. Fipronil (FP) is a GABA receptor inhibitor, while buprofezin (BPFN) is an insect growth regulator. Presently, we exposed groups of aquaria acclimated carp fish (Cyprinus carpio) for 96h to sub-lethal concentrations of fipronil (400μgL(-1); 9.15×10(-7)molL(-1)) and buprofezin (BPFN, 100mgL(-1); 1.072×10(-6)molL(-1)) singly or in combination. The extent of damage was assessed at biochemical, hematological, molecular biological and histopathological level. Results o

Repair of pectus excavatum began at the beginning of the 20th century before endotracheal intubation was standard practice. Surgeons therefore developed techniques that corrected the deformity using an open procedure via the anterior chest wall. Initial techniques were unsatisfactory, but by the 1930s the partial rib resection and sternal osteotomy technique had been developed and was used in combination with external traction post-operatively to prevent the sternum from sinking back into the chest. In 1949, Ravitch recommended complete resection of the costal cartilages and complete mobilizat

CONTEXT: The proportion of paratyphoid fever cases to typhoid fever cases may change due to urbanization and increased dependency on food purchased from street vendors. For containment of paratyphoid a different strategy may be needed than for typhoid, because risk factors for disease may not coincide and current typhoid vaccines do not protect against paratyphoid fever.
OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for typhoid and paratyphoid fever in an endemic area.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Community-based case-control study conducted from June 2001 to February 2003 in hospitals and outp

Species of plants and animals, as well as nations of human beings were extinguished throughout the prehistory and history of this planet. One of the possible explanations for this phenomenon is a large scale epidemic of viral, bacterial or fungal infections. One well-documented example was the smallpox epidemic among native Indians of South America following the European invasion. Deliberate dissemination of disease was used as a weapon during the Middle Ages when corpses of plague casualties were thrown over the walls and into the besieged towns. The Book of Kings II, of the Bible, in chapter

1. We report here the extent to which changes in protein turnover contribute to the previously described inhibition of growth of rat tibial length and skeletal muscle mass in response to protein deficiency [1], energy restriction and corticosterone treatment [2]. Measurements of 35S uptake in vivo also enabled the qualitative pattern of changes in proteoglycan synthesis in bone and muscle to be established. 2. Protein deficiency was examined by ad libitum feeding of 20%, 7%, 3.5% and 0.5% protein diets with measurements at 1, 3 and 7 days (all diets), and 14 and 21 days (0.5% protein). In bone

Fines migration is a critical formation-damage mechanism in sandstone reservoirs, causing permeability reduction and injectivity loss during water flooding and injection operations. The onset of fines mobilization is governed by various key physicochemical thresholds, including critical salt concentration (CSC) and critical pH. These parameters control the balance between attractive and repulsive surface forces at the fine-brine-rock interface through electrical double-layer expansion. Although Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO)-based modeling provides mechanistic insight, high-throughput

INTRODUCTION: Climate-related events such as droughts, extreme heat, and flooding intensify pressures on psychological well-being, particularly in vulnerable, low-resource, and conflict-affected settings. Iraq ranks as the world's fifth most climate-vulnerable country, and the Kurdistan Region has been increasingly affected by frequent and intense extreme weather events that threaten livelihoods and community stability. Despite rising exposure, the mental health impacts of climate change in the Kurdistan Region remain largely understudied. This study investigates the effects of climate change-
