The Prevalence of Iron and Vitamin D Deficiencies in Pediatric Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Bahrain.

Introduction Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic diseases that can affect nutrient absorption leading to micronutrient deficiencies and biochemical abnormalities. This study aimed to assess certain serum micronutrients and nutritionally related biochemical markers levels in patients with pediatric IBD and to compare the actual levels and the prevalence of micronutrients deficiencies and biochemical abnormalities between patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and those with ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study reviewing medical records of patients with IBD

Whey protein isolate improves vitamin B12 and folate status in elderly Australians with subclinical deficiency of vitamin B12.

SCOPE: Whey protein isolate (WPI) contains vitamin B12 and folate. However, the efficacy of WPI as a bioavailable source of these vitamins in the elderly with low vitamin B12 was not previously tested. We investigated the effects of WPI supplementation on vitamin B12 and folate status in blood and measured changes in homocysteine (HCY), methylmalonic acid (MMA), and genome integrity biomarkers in elderly individuals with low vitamin B12 status. The effect of WPI was compared to soy protein isolate (SPI). METHODS AND RESULTS: In this randomized controlled cross-over intervention trial, 56 subc

Drug-induced pertubation of the aminothiol redox-status in patients with epilepsy: improvement by B-vitamins.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with epilepsy have excess morbidity and mortality due to ischemic cardiovascular disease. Many of these patients have elevated concentrations of plasma total homocysteine (Hcy), which is an acknowledged risk factor for cardiovascular disease, venous thromboembolic disease, foetal malformations and dementia. Hyperhomocysteinemia may have negative effects through mechanisms involving oxidative damage. In the present study, we have investigated the aminothiol redox-status in patients on antiepileptic drugs. Thereafter, in a subset of patients with elevated total Hcy, we evalu

COVID-19's toll on the elderly and those with diabetes mellitus - Is vitamin B12 deficiency an accomplice?

COVID-19 exacts a disproportionate toll on both the elderly and those with diabetes; these patients are more likely to require costly intensive care, longer hospitalisation, and die from complications. Nations would thus find it extremely difficult to either lift or sustain socially, economically, and politically damaging restrictions that keep this group of people safe. Without a vaccine, there is thus an urgent need to identify potential modifiable risk factors which can help manage overall fatality or recovery rates. Case fatality rates are highly variable between (and even within) nations;

Lymphocyte subpopulations in megaloblastic anaemia due to vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Lymphocyte subpopulations were measured in the blood of 17 patients with megaloblastic anaemia due to vitamin B-12 deficiency. 14 patients had pernicious anaemia and 3 others were gastrectomized. By using monoclonal antibodies recognizing T cell surface markers and immunofluorescence microscopy, we found a significant decrease in the number of circulating suppressor T cells and an increase in the ratio of helper to suppressor T lymphocytes in pernicious anaemia patients. This finding may be related to other immune abnormalities found in pernicious anaemia, e.g. the presence of multiple autoant

Effects of vitamin B inclusion rates in milk replacer on health and growth of preweaned Holstein-Angus crossbred calves.

The adequacy of current recommendations for B-vitamin content of milk replacer has received little research attention, particularly with producers feeding more milk than historical standards. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of varying inclusion levels of B vitamins in milk replacer (MR) on health and growth of preweaned calves through 9 wk of age. Forty-two Holstein-Angus cross calves (≤7 d old) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: control (CON, basal MR with no added B vitamins), basal plus (BP, MR with moderate B vitamin supplementation: 1.9 mg/kg B1, 1.7 mg/kg B3,

Improved micronutrient status and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries following large-scale fortification: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrient malnutrition is highly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and disproportionately affects women and children. Although the effectiveness of large-scale food fortification (LSFF) of staple foods to prevent micronutrient deficiencies in high-income settings has been demonstrated, its effectiveness in LMICs is less well characterized. This is important as food consumption patterns, potential food vehicles, and therefore potential for impact may vary substantially in these contexts. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the real-world impac

Screening for abnormal haemoglobins: a pilot study.

A pilot study has been made of the implication of screening for abnormal haemoglobins in immigrant schoolchildren. An abnormality was detected by capillary blood haemoglobin electrophoresis in 8.4% of 6,835 children and a haemoglobinopathy outpatient clinic had to be established to deal with the heavy work load which resulted. The clinic was also used to determine the value of investigating the remaining members of the family once an abnormality had been detected in one child.Healthy siblings with normal haemoglobin electrophoretic patterns and normal iron and folate levels were studied to det

Use of a novel genetic mouse model to investigate the role of folate in colitis-associated colon cancer.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are at high risk for developing folate deficiency and colon cancer. Since it is difficult to study the subtle global and gene-specific epigenetic mechanisms involved in folate-mediated tumor initiation and promotion, we have generated genetically modified mouse models by targeting the reduced folate carrier (RFC1) and folate-binding protein (Folbp1) genes. The transgenic mice were fed semi-purified diets for 8 weeks containing either normal (2 mg) or deficient (0.1 mg folate/kg diet) levels of folate. Compound heterozygous mice (Folbp1(+/-); RFC1(+/-))

Nutritional deficiencies in chronic alcoholics: relation to dietary intake and alcohol consumption.

OBJECTIVES: Relationships of nutritional status with ethanol consumption and diet were studied in 33 chronic alcoholics with no clinical or laboratory evidence of liver disease. METHODS: Nutritional assessment included subjective global assessment, weight-height index, body mass index, and serum albumin measurements. Dietary intake included estimates of daily intake of substrates, folic acid, vitamins B1, B5, B6, and B12. Circulating concentrations of folate, pyridoxal-phosphate and vitamin B12 were evaluated as well. RESULTS: Only 18.1% of patients were considered malnourished, with body ma

Determinants of compliance with iron-folic acid supplementation among pregnant mothers in Bule Hora district, Southern Ethiopia: unmatched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has recommended daily supplementation with iron folic acid, to prevent anemias during pregnancy. However, due to many factors, compliance of pregnant women with this recommendation of iron and folic acid supplementation remains low, both in Africa and Ethiopia. Studies conducted in issue shows setting specific difference regarding determinants of iron and folic acid compliance. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the determinants of iron and folic acid supplementation compliance among antenatal care attendee pregnant women in the Bule Hora district,

Determinants of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus - A primary-care retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Like many developed nations, the prevalence of both older people and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Singapore is rising. This demographic shift predisposes the population to greater risks of both frailty and its complications that can be further aggravated by vitamin B12 deficiency -a highly prevalent associated variable that is potentially modifiable. Indeed, B12 deficiency adversely impacts the neuro-cognitive, haematological, and even the immune systems; jeopardizing our aspirations for successful aging. Despite this, many patients with T2DM in primary care remain unscreened

Considering the case for vitamin B12 fortification of flour.

Reasons to fortify flour with vitamin B12 are considered, including the high prevalence of depletion and deficiency of this vitamin that occurs in persons of all ages in resource-poor countries and in the elderly in wealthier countries, and the adverse functional consequences of poor vitamin B12 status. From a global perspective, the main cause of inadequate intake and status is a low intake of animal-source foods; even lacto-ovo vegetarians have lower serum vitamin B12 concentrations than omnivores, and for various reasons many populations have limited consumption of animal-source foods. [Diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency: a case illustrating diagnostic pitfalls].

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin B12 deficiency is a longstanding public health problem which affects more than 20% of the elderly population. Among multiple causes of vitamin B12 deficiency, Biermer's disease is currently mentioned in about 25% of the cases. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 71-year-old woman, taking folate substitution therapy who, over 2 years, progressively developed spinal combined sclerosis, subacute dementia and severe neuropathy leading to a bedridden state. The initial assessment revealed normocytic anemia, without vitamin B12 deficiency and without increased plasma level of

The effect of antiepileptic drugs on vitamin B12 metabolism.

The effects of antiepileptic drugs (AED) on the serum concentration of vitamin B12, folic acid and homocysteine (HMC), and erythrocyte folic acid levels were determined in 45 epileptic patients (30 women, 15 men; mean age 31.7 years) and 23 healthy volunteers (control group; 18 women, five men; mean age 33.4 years). All patients were either on carbamazepine (CMZ), oxcarbazepine (OXZ), or valporate (VP) monotherapy. Serum vitamin B12 levels were low in 17.8% of patients and 8.7% of the controls (P = 0.299). Serum homocysteine levels were high in 17.8% of the patients (P = 0.008). Fifty percent

Mechanisms of vitamin B12 deficiency in elderly inpatients.

A protein-bound Schilling test incorporating chick serum was used to study 16 elderly vitamin B12-deficient inpatients. Thirteen of these also underwent standard Schilling tests. They were compared with an age-matched control group of non-deficient inpatients. The lower limit of normal for assimilation of protein-bound vitamin B12 was 0.7%. Fourteen out of 16 deficient patients assimilated protein-bound vitamin B12 subnormally. Twelve of these were fully Schilling tested. Five assimilated free B12 normally, and five responded to intrinsic factor. One patient did not respond to intrinsic factor
