A group of 5,518 female Asian house keepers working in Abha District of Saudi Arabia was examined (1990 through 1992) to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections. They came from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Thailand. Fresh stool specimens were obtained in special containers and examined by light microscopy of wet smears in normal saline and Lugoll's iodine solution within one hour of collection. The study revealed an overall prevalence of 46.5% which was higher than that reported among the Saudi population. The common parasites found included Trichuris trichiura (28

Infections of the CNS may be caused by diverse etiologies. These include bacteria, viruses, mycoses, protozoa, helminths. In these CNS infections there is a breakdown in the blood-brain barrier. The most common clinical forms of intracranial CNS infections include meningitis, cerebritis-abscess formation, and dural infections. These conditions may be complicated by infarction, hydrocephalus, brain atrophy unless the CNS infection in detected early. The introduction of CT has markedly enhanced our ability to diagnose early and initiate therapy rapidly. In most disorders early diagnosis has caus

Faecal specimens were collected form a total of 7569 scholars at 45 different localities in northern KwaZulu and screened for the presence of intestinal helminth and protozoan parasites. The soil-transmitted nematodes Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm sp. were extremely common, with prevalences in certain localities ranking among the highest to be recorded in South Africa. Entamoeba coli was by far the commonest (60%) of the protozoa;p all the other species had prevalences of less than 10%. The distribution age-specific prevalence and the influence of the variables-sex, ar

A parasitic surveillance of farm workers of Puerto Rican background and their children revealed a high prevalence rate (35.5%) of parasites in this population. This high prevalence rate, however, was expected in view of the fact that other researchers have found a high degree of parasitosis in Puerto Rican populations residing on the US mainland. However, the prevalence rate was almost double that reported by Winsberg, et al, for the urban population, thus suggesting a higher degree of exposure to the migrant worker than to his counterpart living in the cities. Two cases of hookworm infections

Non-neoplastic gastrointestinal disease in South America is largely related to environmental conditions. Parasitic disorders, including Chagas' disease with megacolon, predominate in endemic regions. Common enteritides of various etiologie are frequent, whereas appendicits, diverticulosis of the colon, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are extremely rare. There was no appendicitis in native Indians of Paraguay.

Lung-trafficking helminth larvae drive an early pulmonary neutrophilic inflammation prior to the establishment of the hallmark Type 2 immune response. While IL-11 is known to play crucial roles in chronic inflammatory responses, its role in the mucosal immunity to helminth parasites has not been assessed to date. In a mouse model for Ascaris infection, we observed elevated IL-11 levels in lung tissue that strikingly correlated with parasite burden. Single-cell molecular and phenotypic analyses, combined with confocal and RNAscope spatial imaging, identified lung epithelial cells and peribronch

BACKGROUND: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) affect 1.5 billion people worldwide with 39% of the global burden occurring in Africa. In Kenya, NTDs remain endemic despite control efforts, with co-endemicity of soil-transmitted helminths (STH), schistosomiasis (SCH), and lymphatic filariasis (LF) complicating intervention strategies. This study developed machine learning models to predict high-risk co-endemic areas using demographic and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) indicators.
METHODOLOGY: The study analyzed Kenya's 2022 NTD co-endemicity data from the Expanded Special Project for El

Although 44.6 million adults live in endemic areas, epidemiological studies and interventions primarily target school-age children (SAC). Hence, data on the prevalence and intensity of Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STHs) infections and associated factors among all age groups is crucial to expand interventions. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, intensity, and associated factors of STHs infections and to compare the diagnostic performance of Kato-Katz thick smear (KK) and formol-ether concentration techniques (FECT) in Gorgora, Western Dembia district, Ethiopia. A community-based cross

BACKGROUND: Intestinal helminth infections trigger complex host responses, determining parasite survival and tissue homeostasis. Primary Echinostoma caproni infection disrupts epithelial metabolism, differentiation, and repair in an IL-25-deficient environment, as shown in a previous study by our research group; however, the adaptive mechanisms during homologous superimposed infections remain unclear.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Male ICR mice were assigned to control, primary infection, and homologous superimposed infection groups, and ileal epithelial cells were isolated for proteomic pr

Naive CD4+ T cells in specific pathogen-free (SPF) mice are characterized by transcriptional heterogeneity and subpopulations distinguished by the expression of quiescence, the extracellular matrix (ECM) and cytoskeleton, type I interferon (IFN-I) response, memory-like, and T cell receptor (TCR) activation genes. We demonstrate that this constitutive heterogeneity, including the presence of the IFN-I response cluster, is commensal independent insofar as being identical in germ-free and SPF mice. By contrast, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection altered this constitutive heterogeneity. Naive

BACKGROUND: One of the most important pillars of action to achieve the elimination of trachoma and soil-transmitted helminth infections as a public health problem is the mass administration, at regular intervals, of azithromycin and anthielmintics, respectively, to a high proportion of the eligible population in endemic areas.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to identify access barriers and facilitators for achieving coverage goals in the mass drugs administration, azithromycin and albendazole, in the department of Amazonas, Colombia.
METHODOLOGY: Implementation research was used, c

The epithelium is an integral component of mucosal barrier and host immunity. Following helminth infection, the intestinal epithelial cells secrete "alarmin" cytokines, such as interleukin-25 (IL-25) and IL-33, to initiate the type 2 immune responses for helminth expulsion and tolerance. However, it is unknown how helminth infection and the resulting cytokine milieu drive epithelial remodeling and orchestrate alarmin secretion. Here, we report that epithelial O-linked N-Acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) protein modification was induced upon helminth infections. By modifying and activating the trans

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Precision medicine could help to improve diagnosis and treatment of asthma; however, in the tropics there are special conditions to be considered for applying this strategy. In this review, we analyze recent advances of precision allergology in tropical regions, highlighting its limitations and needs in high-admixed populations living under environments with high exposure to house dust mites and helminth infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances have been made regarding the genetic characterization of the great diversity of populations living in the tropics. Genes involved in s

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) and schistosome infections are among the most prevalent neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in the world. School-aged children are particularly vulnerable to these chronic infections that can impair growth, nutritional status and cognitive ability. Mass drug administration (MDA) delivered either once or twice annually is a safe and effective approach recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce worm burden. In 2012, Kenya began a national school-based deworming programme (NSBDP) aimed at reducing infection and associated morbidity. The
