Rats and mice with bilateral vestibular loss exhibit dramatic locomotor hyperactivity and circling behaviours, which to date cannot be explained. Dysfunction of the striatal dopaminergic system is responsible for a number of known movement disorders and the D(2) dopamine receptor is known to be implicated. Therefore, it is possible that changes in striatal function are responsible for locomotor hyperactivity and circling following bilateral vestibular lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the D(2) receptor antagonist, eticlopride (0.02, 0.04 and 0.06mg/kg; s.c.), on

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is often difficult, and therefore the condition can be overlooked. Tympanoscopy presents an alternative procedure for visualising the middle ear anatomy, and it may help to diagnose PLF.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of middle ear endoscopy in establishing the diagnosis of PLF and in defining its incidence in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo and tinnitus.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-five patients (22-80 years of age, mean 48 years) were prospectively and consecutively referred

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report was to illustrate how an unusual complication of posterior canal occlusion surgery for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) may be recognized and prevented. Recurrence of BPPV after occlusion surgery of the posterior semicircular canal has not previously been reported in the literature, to the authors' knowledge. Failure of occlusion not only permits the continued symptoms of BPPV but also burdens the patient with the additional morbidity of a fistula of the PSCC. The authors describe the successful treatment of a patient with recurrent and incapaci

INTRODUCTION: Accurate preoperative imaging of the temporal bone in patients receiving cochlear implants is important. High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are the 2 preoperative imaging modalities that provide critical information on abnormalities of the otic capsule, pneumatisation of the mastoid, middle ear abnormalities, cochlear ducts patency and presence of cochlear nerve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The HRCT and MR imaging in 46 cochlear implant patients in our department were reviewed.
RESULTS: Majority of our patients [34 patients (73.9%)] showed

UNLABELLED: Radiosurgery is either a primary or an adjunct management approach used to treat patients with vestibular schwannomas. The goals are long-term tumour growth control, maintenance of cranial nerve function and prevention of new neurologic deficiencies. We sought to determine long-term outcomes measuring the potential benefits against the neurological risks of radiosurgery.
METHODS: 278 patients with vestibular schwannomas underwent Gamma Knife radiosurgery as a treatment modality for from April 1992 to November 2001. The long-term results of 60 patients were evaluated who received r

Our understanding of the mechanisms underlying inherited forms of inner ear deficits has considerably improved during the past 20 y, but we are still far from curative treatments. We investigated gene replacement as a strategy for restoring inner ear functions in a mouse model of Usher syndrome type 1G, characterized by congenital profound deafness and balance disorders. These mice lack the scaffold protein sans, which is involved both in the morphogenesis of the stereociliary bundle, the sensory antenna of inner ear hair cells, and in the mechanoelectrical transduction process. We show that a

CHD7 is a chromodomain gene mutated in CHARGE syndrome, a multiple anomaly condition characterized by ocular coloboma, heart defects, atresia of the choanae, retarded growth and development, genital hypoplasia, and ear defects including deafness and semicircular canal dysgenesis. Mice with heterozygous Chd7 deficiency have circling behavior and semicircular canal defects and are an excellent animal model for exploring the pathogenesis of CHARGE features. Inner ear vestibular defects have been characterized in heterozygous Chd7-deficient embryos and early postnatal mice, but it is not known whe

BACKGROUND: Acute acoustic trauma is usually acquired during military service after exposure to impulse or blast wave noise. The typical audiometric shape is a notch centered at about 4 kHz with some recovery above this frequency. This is the first case of an immediate induced unilateral total hearing loss in a young soldier following exposure to gunfire noise.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old right-handed army officer during military training, after realizing a series of five shots with a rifle (G3), immediately experienced on the right ear otalgia, tinnitus and severe hearing loss, without imbala

Branchio-Oto-Renal (BOR) syndrome is an autosomal dominant, early developmental defect characterised by varying combinations of branchial (fistulas, sinuses, and cysts), outer, middle and inner ear, and renal anomalies. The gene underlying this syndrome, EYA1, is homologous to the Drosophila developmental gene eyes absent which encodes a transcriptional co-activator required for eye specification. We report here the temporal and spatial pattern of expression of the murine homologue, Eya1, throughout ear and kidney development in relation to the anomalies of BOR syndrome. The expression of Eya1
