Agreement of Feline Grimace Scale scores between chatbots and an expert rater.

The performance of large language models (LLMs) during acute pain assessment in cats has not been evaluated. This study evaluated the agreement of the Feline Grimace Scale (FGS) scoring between four chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude AI, and Perplexity) and an expert veterinarian, including bias and limits of agreement (LoA), and whether bias would be reduced when retested after two months. Fifty cat facial images were scored twice, two months apart, by each chatbot using the FGS (ear position, orbital tightening, muzzle tension, whiskers change and head position). The Bland-Altman method was u…

AI and narrative embeddings detect PTSD following childbirth via birth stories.

Free-text analysis using machine learning (ML)-based natural language processing (NLP) shows promise for diagnosing psychiatric conditions. Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) has demonstrated preliminary initial feasibility for this purpose; however, whether it can accurately assess mental illness remains to be determined. This study evaluates the effectiveness of ChatGPT and the text-embedding-ada-002 (ADA) model in detecting post-traumatic stress disorder following childbirth (CB-PTSD), a maternal postpartum mental illness affecting millions of women annually, with no standard

Melodic Intonation Therapy on Non-fluent Aphasia After Stroke: A Systematic Review and Analysis on Clinical Trials.

Melodic intonation therapy (MIT) is a melodic musical training method that could be combined with language rehabilitation. However, some of the existing literature focuses on theoretical mechanism research, while others only focus on clinical behavioral evidence. Few clinical experimental studies can combine the two for behavioral and mechanism analysis. This review aimed at systematizing recent results from studies that have delved explicitly into the MIT effect on non-fluent aphasia by their study design properties, summarizing the findings, and identifying knowledge gaps for future work. MI

Prefrontal and Cerebellar Contributions to Semantic Memory Retrieval.

Semantic memory retrieval is essential for language, thought, and adaptive behavior. Although both the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the cerebellum have been implicated in this function, the role of the PFC remains poorly understood and the contribution of the cerebellum largely overlooked in current neurocognitive models. To address these gaps, we conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled experiment in which healthy adults received anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting the left lateral PFC, the right posterior cerebellum, or sham stimulation. Participant

Artificial intelligence at the frontlines: Emerging infectious and parasitic diseases in the digital era.

Emerging infectious diseases are one of the most significant threats to global health, driven by many factors such as zoonotic spillovers, climate change, globalization, and antibiotic resistance. While a great deal of attention is focused on viral and bacterial pathogens (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, influenza, multidrug-resistant TB), parasitic diseases contribute to global morbidity and mortality that remain largely unrecognized. The recent development of artificial intelligence has introduced powerful computational tools that can integrate large and complex datasets to assist with infectious disease

Nothing About Us Without Us: Centering Lived Experience as the AMPD Moves Forward.

The alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) is approaching readiness for inclusion in the main section of the DSM, yet research informing its development has largely overlooked the perspectives of those who receive personality disorder diagnoses. This commentary argues that centering lived experience is essential for evaluating the AMPD's diagnostic language, given evidence that certain trait terminology (notably "manipulativeness") is perceived as highly stigmatizing. The AMPD's Criterion A, which emphasizes personality functioning rather than dispositional traits, may offer a less

Protein Language Models Identify Early Folding Residues as Critical Hotspots for Pathogenic Variants and Cancer Prognosis.

Identifying the specific residues that initiate protein folding is critical for understanding protein stability and the mechanisms of misfolding-related diseases. However, the systematic, proteome-wide identification of these early folding residues (EFRs) has been hampered by both experimental and computational limitations. Here, we present LMEFold, a deep learning framework using protein language models (PLMs) to accurately predict EFRs from amino acid sequence alone. LMEFold outperforms existing sequence-based predictors on the Start2Fold benchmark (ROC AUC = 0.831), and its predicted scores

Uncovering childcare struggles through topic modeling.

Challenges with accessing reliable childcare are a main source of distress for many families with young children. Research has documented the detrimental effects of lack of access to stable and reliable care on caregivers and children, but little is known about which childcare-related challenges and impacts caregivers themselves perceive as most central. We bridge this gap by leveraging biterm topic modeling, a natural language processing technique, to analyze large-scale open-ended survey data, identify common themes brought up by parents when talking about childcare, and examine covariation

Prehospital Injury Severity Estimate (PHISE) matches in-hospital trauma scores when embedded in AI models.

Trauma severity scores such as the Injury Severity Score (ISS) and New Injury Severity Score (NISS) are widely used for trauma benchmarking, risk stratification and outcome prediction, but rely on diagnostic imaging unavailable in the prehospital setting. We developed and externally validated the Prehospital Injury Severity Estimate (PHISE), a simple, scene-based score designed to be applied using clinical examination and knowledge of the injury mechanism. PHISE was retrospectively derived from the National Trauma Data Bank® (NTDB®) by mapping AIS-coded injury descriptions to eight PHISE body
