Iatrogenic ocular vascular occlusions: case reports.

Report of two patients with severe loss of visual acuity after surgery in the head and neck area. Ophthalmic examination and imaging studies demonstrate an occlusion of the ophthalmic and central retinal arteries. In both cases, the underlying physiopathology is the embolisation by an intra-operatively injected substance. Embolisation is thought to occur via anastomosing branches between the external and internal carotid arteries. These cases demonstrate that surgery in head and neck area can result in unexpected and devastating ocular complications.

Systemic lupus erythematosus presenting earlier as retinal vaso-occlusion.

Retinal vascular lesions are the most common ophthalmologic manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), occurring in 3% to 29% of cases, generally late in the disease. More rare is the severe vaso-occlusive disease, often termed "retinal vasculitis", which includes central retinal artery occlusion, multifocal arteriolar occlusions, extensive capillary nonperfusion and central venous occlusion. Patients with SLE and raised serum concentrations of anticardiolipin antibodies (ACA) have a higher risk of developing occlusive ocular vascular disease. We report a case in which retinal involv

[Proliferative retinal vasculitis and multiple sclerosis: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Retinal periphlebitis can precede the neurological effects of multiple sclerosis and reveal the disease. Although these occurrences of vasculitis are noted in 10% - 35% of multiple sclerosis patients, proliferative retinopathy is, on the contrary, an exceptional complication. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 28-year-old woman who presented bilateral, proliferative, retinal vasculitis complicated with recurrent vitreous hemorrhages occurring with multiple sclerosis. Initially, there was a unilateral, central venous thrombosis in a particularly ischemic and proliferative form.

Genetic and pharmacological targeting of mTORC1 in mouse models of arteriovenous malformation expose non-cell autonomous signalling in HHT.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal high flow shunts between arteries and veins with major negative impact on the cardiovascular system. Inherited loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in endoglin, encoding an endothelial cell (EC) expressed co-receptor for BMP9/10, causes the disease HHT1/Osler-Weber-Rendu, characterized by bleeding and AVMs. Here we observe increased activity of the downstream signalling complex mTORC1 within the retinal vasculature of HHT mouse models. To investigate its importance in AVM biology, concerning subvascular action, cell specificity, signalling strength a

Portable ultra-widefield fundus camera for multispectral imaging of the retina and choroid.

Multispectral imaging (MSI) of the retina and choroid has increasing interest for better diagnosis and treatment evaluation of eye diseases. However, currently available MSI systems have a limited field of view (FOV) to evaluate the peripheral retina. This study is to validate trans-pars-planar illumination for a contact-mode ultra-widefield MSI system. By freeing the available pupil for collecting imaging light only, the trans-pars-planar illumination enables a portable, non-mydriatic fundus camera, with 200° FOV in a single fundus image. The trans-pars-planar illumination, delivering illumin

A Case of Trousseau's Syndrome Accompanying Ovarian Cancer with Widespread Thromboembolisms.

The patient was a 41-year-old woman, gravida 0. She had no notable medical history. Laparoscopic right salpingo-oophorectomy and left cystectomy were performed for bilateral ovarian endometriomas, which were both pathologically diagnosed as benign. Six months later, she presented with left lower abdominal pain and expressive aphasia. Examination revealed multiple cerebral infarctions and pulmonary embolism. The patient was diagnosed with Trousseau's syndrome secondary to ovarian cancer, and anticoagulant therapy was initiated. Despite treatment, she developed visual field loss due to occlusion

Combined effect of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and LINGO-1 fusion protein on long-term survival of retinal ganglion cells in chronic glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a progressive neuropathy characterized by loss of vision as a result of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death. There are no effective neuroprotectants to treat this disorder. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is well known to transiently delay RGC death in ocular hypertensive eyes. The CNS-specific leucine-rich repeat protein LINGO-1 contributes to the negative regulation to some trophic pathways. We thereby examined whether BDNF combined with LINGO-1 antagonists can promote long-term RGC survival after ocular hypertension. In this study, intraocular pressure was elevated in adu

The neuropathology of infant subdural haemorrhage.

Subdural haemorrhage (SDH) in the infant has a different pattern from that seen in the older child and adult. It is usually a widespread, bilateral, thin film, unlike the thick, space-occupying and often unilateral clot seen in older children and adults after trauma. Whether both arise by the same mechanism is unknown, but it seems unlikely. Most SDH is said to be due to trauma but in infants there are other, atraumatic causes. Birth is also important; recent MRI studies show an incidence of almost 50% in asymptomatic neonates. Traumatic SDH is said to result from rupture of bridging veins but

[Churg-Strauss syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The Churg-Strauss syndrome, also known as allergic granulomatosis with angiitis, is a rare necrotizing vasculitis with unknown pathogenesis. The necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis involves small and medium-sized arteries, capillaries and veins, leading to the characteristic changes of intra- and extravascular, eosiniphilic granulomas, accompanied by clinically symptoms: bronchial asthma, hypereosinophilia and fever. Ocular manifestations are rarely reported. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old woman suffered from bronchial asthma, relapsing lung infiltrates and sinusites since 1994. In A

Secondary central retinal artery occlusion due to rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis in a diabetic patient: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute sinusitis can cause intraorbital complications. Although subperiosteal abscesses generally do not cause severe vision loss, rare cases of decreased vision due to central artery or vein occlusion have been reported since 2003. Central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) is an eye emergency that can cause sudden loss of vision. This condition is commonly found in elderly individuals with other metabolic diseases. The authors report a case of a type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patient with CRAO due to suspected rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM). CASE PRESEN

Cu-Doping Layered Double Hydroxides Nanozyme Integrated with Nitric Oxide Donor for Enhanced Antioxidant Therapy in Retinopathy.

The prevalence of retinal neovascular diseases necessitates novel treatments beyond current therapies like laser surgery or anti-VEGF treatments, which often carry significant side effects. A novel therapeutic approach is introduced using copper-containing layered double hydroxides (Cu-LDH) nanozymes integrated with nitric oxide-releasing molecules (GSHNO), forming Cu-LDH@GSHNO aimed at combating oxidative stress within the retinal vascular system. Combination of synthetic chemistry and biological testing, Cu-LDH@GSHNO are synthesized, characterized, and assessed for curative effect in HUVECs

Prevalence of Retinal Venous Malformations in Patients With Cerebral Cavernous or Arteriovenous Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral vascular malformations (CVMs) may result in hemorrhage, seizure, neurologic dysfunction, and death. CVMs include capillary telangiectasias, venous malformations, cavernous malformations, and arteriovenous malformations. Cavernous and arteriovenous malformations carry the highest risk of complications. Retinal venous malformations (RVMs) have been proposed as an associated finding. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of RVMs in patients with high-risk CVMs. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with cerebral cavernous or arteriovenous malformati
