1. Association of bronchial asthma, nasal pathology and intolerance to aspirin is a unique syndrome. Aspirin-induced prolongation of bleeding time, and a tendency for diabetes, may exist with it. 2. The syndrome occurs most often in the middle-aged female. 3. Progression of asthma and nasal polyposis is not prevented by avoidance of aspirin. 4. Salicylates other than aspirin are well tolerated but cross-reactivity with other analgesics, and with tartrazine, may occur. 5. The underlying mechanism is unknown. An immunologic basic is most unlikely.

The results of attempts to detect circulating immune complexes in sera by two methods are described. Both rely on the binding of the first complement component (C1) to the complex for its detection. The results, using these methods, of attempts to show which patients have complexes which contain nucleic acid and hence possibly viral antigens in the complexes are discussed. The anti-complementary complexes found in some patients seem to be associated with immune-complex vascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which veins are unable to transport blood unidirectionally towards the heart. CVI usually occurs in the lower limbs. It might result in considerable discomfort, with symptoms such as pain, itchiness and tiredness in the legs. Patients with CVI may also experience swelling and ulcers. Many patients experience reactions during penicillin treatment. The diagnosis may be difficult and is mainly based on short-term tests. The European Network for Drug Allergy (ENDA) guidelines proposed for diagnosing penicillin allergy do not include long-term challenge. In this study a total of 405 patients were evaluated. The ENDA guidelines were extended, to include a 7-day oral treatment (p.o.7) with penicillin for all patients who were negative in the ENDA programme. Using the paper-radioimmunosorbens test (PRIST) normal values were obtained from 200 non-allergic children. The IgE level was aged-dependent, in part with significant differences between various age groups. These normal values were compared with those in children with seborrhoeic dermitis, constitutional neurodermatitis, parasitoses, urticaria, Quincke oedema, Schönlein-Henoch purpura, pityriasis rosea, multiform exudative erythema, erythema nodosum and infantile papular acrodermatitis. Half-life of IgE in neonates was 16.2 hours.
