Parasites resistant to the antimalarial atovaquone fail to transmit by mosquitoes.

Drug resistance compromises control of malaria. Here, we show that resistance to a commonly used antimalarial medication, atovaquone, is apparently unable to spread. Atovaquone pressure selects parasites with mutations in cytochrome b, a respiratory protein with low but essential activity in the mammalian blood phase of the parasite life cycle. Resistance mutations rescue parasites from the drug but later prove lethal in the mosquito phase, where parasites require full respiration. Unable to respire efficiently, resistant parasites fail to complete mosquito development, arresting their life cy

Impact of indoor residual spraying of lambda-cyhalothrin on malaria prevalence and anemia in an epidemic-prone district of Muleba, north-western Tanzania.

The Government of Tanzania introduced indoor residual spraying (IRS) in Muleba district in north-western Tanzania after frequent malaria epidemics. Malaria parasitological baseline and two cross-sectional follow-up surveys were conducted in villages under the IRS program and those not under IRS to assess the impact of IRS intervention. After two rounds of IRS intervention there was a significant reduction of malaria parasitological indices in both two villages. In IRS villages overall, parasitemia prevalence was reduced by 67.2%, splenomegaly was reduced by 75.8%, whereas anemia was reduced by

[Epidemiology of urban malaria in Quibdo, Choco].

INTRODUCTION: Although urban malaria is a public health problem in Colombia, little is known about its epidemiological characteristics, needed for the implementation of rational control strategies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the epidemiological characteristics of malaria in the urban area of the municipality of Quibd6, in northwest Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Malaria cases diagnosed in the city of Quibd6 between March and July, 2001 were classified as autochthonous or imported based on travel histories to endemic areas and place of residency. Autochthonous cases were mapped and risk areas

Malaria in England: a geographical and historical perspective.

The marshlands of coastal southern and eastern England had unusually high levels of mortality from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The unhealthiness of the environment aroused frequent comment during this period and it was attributed to an endemic disease known as "marsh fever" or "ague". Marsh parishes were perceived both as a danger to the local inhabitants and as a deterrent to potential settlers. This paper traces the geography and history of the "marsh fever" in England and shows that the disease was, in fact, malaria transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes. Malaria, once endemic in

Identification of a culturable fungal species and endosymbiotic bacteria in saliva of Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens and their impact on arbovirus infection in vitro.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito saliva plays a key role in arbovirus transmission and pathogenesis. It was shown that saliva contains several molecules that are essential for blood feeding. Recently, bacteria were also reported to be present in the saliva of Aedes albopictus and Anopheles mosquitoes. Nevertheless, information on the bacterial communities in Aedes and Culex saliva is still scarce. METHODS: This study isolated and identified culturable fungal and bacterial colonies from saliva harvested from Aedes aegypti (laboratory strain) and Culex pipiens (field-collected) mosquitoes. 16S metagenomic …

A Narrative Review on the Prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum Resistance Mutations to Antimalarial Drugs in Rwanda.

Malaria has been and remains a significant challenge in Africa and other endemic settings. Roughly, 95% of global morbidity and mortality due to malaria occurs within African populations and affects millions of individuals, especially those living in sub-Saharan countries, predominantly due to disease complications. Cultural factors such as unawareness of and disinterest in using recommended preventive tools and combating the primary host (i.e., the female Anopheles mosquito) play a significant role. This host transmits the malaria-causing Plasmodium parasite by biting an infected individual a…

Genetic characterization of candidate ecdysteroid kinases in Drosophila melanogaster.

Ecdysteroids are major hormones in insects and control molting, growth, reproduction, physiology, and behavior. The biosynthesis of ecdysteroids such as 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) from dietary sterols is well characterized, but ecdysteroid catabolism is poorly understood. Ecdysteroid kinases (EcKs) mediate the reversible phosphorylation of ecdysteroids, which has been implicated in ecdysteroid recycling during embryogenesis and reproduction in various insects. However, to date, only 2 EcK-encoding genes have been identified, in the silkworm Bombyx mori and the mosquito Anopheles gambiae. Previou…

Malaria is one of the most devastating diseases across the globe, particularly in low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. The increasing … are a promising avenue for malaria management due to their potential to eliminate malaria vectors (Anopheles sp.) and to encapsulate existing and emerging antimalarial agents and deliver them to different target sites. In this review we summarized studies on the use of plant-derived nanoparticles as cost-effective preventative measures against malaria para …

Malaria Prevalence and Distribution of Plasmodium Species in Southern Region of Ethiopia.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium species and transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes, which is the most common medical concern all over the world, including in Ethiopia. The current systematic review's goal was to determine the overall malaria prevalence and Plasmodium species distribution in Ethiopia's southern area. To achieve these objectives, 716 articles were manually searched from online databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Web of Science. The pooled metalogistic regression was calculated with the STATA 16 software to present the pooled prevalence with a 95% c…

[Isolation and identification of Arbovirus in Hainan province, 2017-2018].

Objective: To understand the types and distribution of Arboviruses in Hainan province. Methods: Blood-sucking insects were collected in Hainan province from 2017 to 2018. After laboratory treatment, BHK-21 cells and C6/36 cells were inoculated with grinding supernatant of all blood-sucking insects to isolate all of involving virus. Arbovirus genes in blood-sucking insects were detected in parallel by RT-PCR method. Results: A total of 15 062 mosquitoes were classified into four genera (Culex, Armigeres, Aedes, Anopheles) and 11 360 midges were collected. Culex tritaeniorhynchus was in the majo…

Impact of community-based larviciding on the prevalence of malaria infection in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The use of larval source management is not prioritized by contemporary malaria control programs in sub-Saharan Africa despite historical success. Larviciding, in particular, could be effective in urban areas where transmission is focal and accessibility to Anopheles breeding habitats is generally easier than in rural settings. The objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a community-based microbial larviciding intervention to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Larviciding was implemented …

The effect of deltamethrin-treated net fencing around cattle enclosures on outdoor-biting mosquitoes in Kumasi, Ghana.

Classic vector control strategies target mosquitoes indoors as the main transmitters of malaria are indoor-biting and -resting mosquitoes. H … cattle and no net. A total of 3217 culicines and 1017 anophelines were collected, of which 388 were Anopheles gambiae and 629 An. ziemanni. The deltamethrin-treated net significantly reduced (nearly three-fold, p<0.0001) culicine landings inside enclosures. The sporozoite …
