Immunization of infants and children is the most effective strategy for decreasing the incidence of some infectious diseases. Most invasive disease due to Haemophilus influenzae type b occurs before age 5 years, and routine vaccination of infants for hepatitis B is currently recommended because selective immunization of high-risk persons has not been feasible. Decades of use of poliovirus vaccine has effectively eliminated cases of wild-virus infection, although some vaccine-related cases still occur. The newly approved varicella vaccine appears to be a cost-effective way to decrease infection

OBJECTIVE: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infections can cause severe disease in immunocompromised individuals. To evaluate the spectrum of VZV infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children, we retrospectively analyzed all the cases of VZV infection in a cohort of children cared for at a hospital for infectious diseases in Bucharest, Romania.
METHODS: The records of 391 HIV-infected children admitted to the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome pavilion of Colentina Hospital during the period January 1, 1991, through March 31, 1992, were reviewed for evidence of VZV infection.

Varicella in pregnancy are a rare event, but they may result in severe disease of child. During the first and second trimenon they may cause congenital defects, so-called congenital varicella syndrome. Primary infections with the varicella-zoster virus are also a risk shortly before or during delivery because of intrauterine transmission of the virus with subsequent connatal varicella. On the basis of own clinic-virological investigations there is reported on 27 women and their newborns affected with varicella during pregnancy. Measures for diagnosis, prophylaxis and therapy in the case of con

Ten patients with acute leukaemia and next three with Hodgkin's or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, suffering from varicella-zoster-virus (VZV) primoinfection, were given 1 to 2 doses of ultrafiltrate of the human leukocytes lysate (LLU) containing transfer factor (TF) activity (1 dose being equivalent to the product of 10(8) leukocytes). Only LLU administered to patients with acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL) at early phases of the illness (days 1 and 2) displayed a notable benefit on the clinical course of varicella. No influence upon the infection, on the other hand, was observed following LLU admin

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a cause of serious pneumonias in immunosuppressed patients. Although there are reports of residual lung changes in adults following VZV pneumonia, no previous studies of lung function in children following this infection have been done. We studied 11 patients (median age 11 years) who had had VZV pneumonia 1 to 16 years previously. All patients had a primary diagnosis of acute lymphocytic leukemia. Pneumonia was mild in most of the patients: Three had only radiographic evidence of pneumonia and required no supplemental oxygen, and seven required an FiO2 less tha

A review of the events which lead up to the recognition of six infectious agents as teratogens showed that in most cases the associations were made through studies of the pathology of the disease or in association with epidemics which affected large numbers of pregnant women. Epidemiological studies of various populations were then conducted to obtain more complete information about the frequency of infection; the syndrome produced in the child; the effect of time of maternal infection; the method of transmission of infection; and approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the disea

We studied a case of herpes zoster with varicella encephalitis in which a granulomatous necrotizing vasculitis was present in the optic nerve and brain. The vasculitis was observed even in foci devoid of inflammatory reaction in surrounding tissue, and was therefore interpreted as a primary vasculitis caused by varicella. To our knowledge, this is the first time a granulomatous vasculitis has been described as an integral part of varicella encephalitis, although others have made similar observations in the eye and even in viscera. These findings support the recent suggestion that so-called gra

Maternal varicella during pregnancy may have a variety of effects on the fetus and newborn infant. Infection early in pregnancy may result in fetal malformations. Zoster early in life appears to be a sequela of maternal infection at any period during pregnancy. Infants may escape disease, may have mild varicella, or fatal illness following maternal varicella just prior to delivery. The outcome appears to be related to the onset of maternal and newborn illness relative to delivery. A variety of management options are available to the physician. Choices will be dictated by weighing the risks of

Thirty-six cases of interstitial pneumonia in acquired immunodeficient states were treated with transfer factor (Dialysable Leukocyte Extract) and studied retrospectively. The criteria of efficacity of this treatment were: rapidity of immediate improvement, improvement after failure of other immunostimulant therapy and demonstration of a dose-related effect. The mechanism of the therapeutic action is unclear. There is no evidence in favour of "transfer" of cell mediated immunity. A non-specific mode of action (adjuvant effect, interferon synergy, proinflammatory action) seems much more likely.

The infections due to herpes-varicella viruses occurring in 191 patients with Hodgkin's disease form the basis of this report. There were overall 41 episodes (26.7%) in 40 patients, distributed as follows: varicella in three cases, atypical herpes-varicella in two cases, and herpes zoster in 36 cases, the latter showing systemic spread in seven instances, one to the central nervous system (myelitis) and six to the skin. The mortality was 2.5% of all infections, and 33% of the varicella cases. Morbidity was apparent as postherpetic neuralgia in seven patients (19.4%), postherpetic paraplegia in

During acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children, bacterial infections occur during initial treatment, whereas virus infections are observed during remission. Mycoses and pneumocystis carinii infections are the commonest late complications. During agranulocytosis, any prolonged fever should be considered as due to infection and probably septicemia. The bacteria are usually of digestive origin. Antibiotic therapy is only very inconstantly efficacious, and the course follows closely the number of granular cells, thus justifying the use of white cell transfusions.

BACKGROUND: Many countries saw an increase in invasive infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (iGAS) late 2022 to early 2023. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain this increase, but thus far, reports have been limited to the immediate post-pandemic period, and the relative contribution of each of those factors remains unknown.
METHODS: We describe the epidemiology of iGAS in Belgium in children below 5 years of age from January 2014 until December 2024 based on laboratory data from the National Reference Centre. Using a cointegration analysis after removing seasonality, we
