Spatio-temporal variation in malaria transmission intensity in five agro-ecosystems in Mvomero district, Tanzania.

In Africa, malaria is predominantly a rural disease where agriculture forms the backbone of the economy. Various agro-ecosystems and crop production systems have an impact on mosquito productivity, and hence malaria transmission intensity. This study was carried out to determine spatial and temporal variations in anopheline mosquito population and malaria transmission intensity in five villages, representing different agro-ecosystems in Mvomero district, Tanzania, so as to provide baseline information for malaria interventions. The agro-ecosystems consisted of irrigated sugarcane, flooding ric…

Food safety.

Food can never be entirely safe. Food safety is threatened by numerous pathogens that cause a variety of foodborne diseases, algal toxins that cause mostly acute disease, and fungal toxins that may be acutely toxic but may also have chronic sequelae, such as teratogenic, immunotoxic, nephrotoxic, and estrogenic effects. Perhaps more worrisome, the industrial activities of the last century and more have resulted in massive increases in our exposure to toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, which now are present in the entire food chain and exhibit various toxicities. Industri

CaSNF1 interacts with and phosphorylates CaHD-ZIP to enhance cold tolerance in pepper.

Cold stress severely restricts pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) growth and productivity by disrupting cellular homeostasis and inducing oxidative damage. Although HD-ZIP transcription factors play important roles in plant abiotic stress responses, the molecular mechanisms regulating their function during cold stress remain largely unknown. Here, we characterized the pepper HD-ZIP transcription factor CaHD-ZIP and demonstrated that it is a nuclear-localized, cold-responsive protein that positively contributes to cold stress tolerance. To further investigate the regulatory mechanism underlying CaHD-Z

Development and performance evaluation of extraction and purification procedures for halogenated DBPs in soil and lettuce.

Reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture exposes soils and edible crops to halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), toxic compounds formed during chlorination. While DBPs are well characterized in water, analytical methods for soil and plant matrices remain scarce, limiting risk assessment for food safety and groundwater contamination. This gap hinders the implementation of EU Regulation 2020/741 on safe wastewater reuse. We developed and evaluated two solid-liquid extraction methods for 36 DBPs across 8 families (THMs, HANs, HNMs, HKs, HALs, HAcAms, HAs, and HAAs) in artificial/natural s

Identification, quantification, and management of human health risks from long-distance pesticide transport.

BACKGROUND: Human health risks associated with long-distance pesticide transport are increasingly recognized but remain insufficiently assessed. Traditional assessments have focused on local applications, whereas growing evidence shows that pesticides can travel across large regions through air, water systems, and trade networks, leading to human exposure far from the original pesticide sources. In response, this study aims to propose an integrated conceptual framework that can identify key transport pathways, clarify long-distance risk, and explore methods for quantifying exposure across inte

Molecular and biophysical foundations of nano-enabled seed priming and smart nanocarriers for crop stress alleviation.

Agricultural productivity is increasingly constrained by interacting abiotic stresses, yet translation of nano-enabled seed treatments from controlled experiments to field agriculture remains limited. Seed nanopriming can initiate physiological and molecular priming before radicle emergence, but outcomes depend strongly on nanomaterial identity, particle size and morphology, surface charge, colloidal stability, cargo chemistry, exposure regime, and crop genotype. This review critically examines mesoporous silica nanoparticles, chitosan-based systems, metal-organic frameworks, hybrid/core-shell

First report of a novel Paenibacillus strain JDF1 and its biocontrol potential against citrus bacterial canker.

Citrus bacterial canker (CBC), caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), causes severe annual yield losses on citrus crops worldwide. Current control strategies including quarantine, copper-based chemicals, and resistant varieties are limited by poor adaptability, pathogen resistance, and long breeding cycles. Herein, a novel endophytic Paenibacillus strain, designated JDF1, was isolated from Veronica persica (a common weed in citrus orchards). In vitro assays demonstrated that JDF1 inhibited Xcc. Greenhouse trials with "Eureka" lemon showed that low-concentration JDF1 (OD600 = 0.2) and

Integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses provide insights into zinc-doped carbon quantum dot-mediated alleviation of cadmium toxicity in lettuce.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in crops seriously threatens agricultural productivity and food safety, highlighting the need for effective strategies to mitigate Cd toxicity. Uniformly dispersed zinc-doped carbon quantum dots (Zn-CQDs; 2.67 ± 0.36 nm) were synthesized in this study. The synthesized dots demonstrated enzyme-mimetic activities in vitro and potent radical-scavenging capacity. Foliar application of Zn-CQDs markedly alleviated Cd-induced growth inhibition in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), increasing shoot fresh and dry biomass by 30.8% and 23.9%, respectively. Moreover, Zn-CQDs treatment

Bottom-Up Effects of Dietary Cadmium Exposure on Asian Corn Borer Ostrinia furnacalis and Its Egg Parasitoid Trichogramma ostriniae: Bioaccumulation and Biocontrol Risks.

Cadmium (Cd) is a pervasive heavy metal pollutant in agricultural ecosystems, posing toxic threats to crop productivity, food safety, and the efficacy of biological control programs. The Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis is a destructive lepidopteran pest of maize in East Asia, while Trichogramma ostriniae serves as the most widely applied egg parasitoid for the sustainable management of this pest in integrated pest management (IPM) programs. However, the cascading effects of sublethal Cd stress transmitted from herbivorous hosts to egg parasitoids remain poorly understood. Here, we

When Winters Fail: How Warming Winters Fuel Pest Resurgence and Threaten Food Security.

The Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata, Wiedemann; Diptera: Tephritidae), commonly known as the Medfly, re-emerged in Mazandaran province, northern Iran-home to an estimated 25% of the nation's fruit crops and approximately 80% of its citrus production-following its apparent eradication in 1984, an outcome consistent with several years of pheromone-trap surveillance without further captures. Its return in 2006 and subsequent spread is consistent with a broader phenomenon we term the erosion of climatic pest barriers: seasonal thermal conditions that have historically suppressed or exc

Disturbance-driven trait shifts in croplands alter the trophic structure of tropical ant assemblages.

Understanding how croplands can support food production while maintaining ecosystems functionality is a major challenge in the Anthropocene. This requires a functional approach to understand how different farming systems reshape species occurrence and functional roles, and how they affect species trophic structure in human-modified ecosystems. We investigated how different cropland types influence trait selection, trophic position, and food chain length of ant assemblages in a tropical region severely threatened by agricultural expansion. We used ants as a model group because of their sensitiv

Potassium fertilization affects nutritional quality and aroma in Haruka apple fruits: insights from multi-omics analysis.

BACKGROUND: Apples are important cultivated fruit crops grown worldwide and represent one of the most nutritious foods in a healthy diet. They are rich in nutrients, such as sugars, organic acids, vitamins, and amino acids, and possess a pleasant aroma. Spraying different types of potash fertilizers on apples can affect the fruit quality at maturity. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of this effect remain unclear. In this study, two types of potassium (K) fertilizers (K2SO4 and KH2PO4) were applied to the leaves of Haruka apples to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of different K

TaIAA25 negatively regulates wheat alkaline tolerance by inhibiting plasma membrane H+-ATPase activity.

Soil salinization/alkalization represents a universal challenge that severely constrains crop productivity. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underpinning saline/alkaline tolerance of wheat (Triticum aestivum) holds profound significance for global food security and sustainable agriculture. In this study, we functionally characterized a wheat alkaline sensitive locus designated Wheat Alkaline Sensitive 1 (WAS1), through whole exome-capture sequencing-based bulked segregant analysis and fine mapping of was1 mutant populations. This locus encodes TaIAA25, a canonical member of the Auxin/Indol

Assessing ascorbic and salicylic acid-induced drought tolerance in marjoram (Origanum vulgare L.) using the MGIDI index.

Water deficit stress, exacerbated by climate change, severely limits crop and medicinal plant productivity. This study evaluated the effects of foliar-applied ascorbic acid (AsA) and salicylic acid (SA) (0, 1, and 2 mM) under varying water deficit levels (90%, 60%, and 30% field capacity (FC)) on antioxidant responses, growth, and essential oil content of marjoram. The treatment ranking results, using the multivariate MGIDI index, showed a statistically significant difference between the treatments. The four selected treatments, were T13, T16, T17, and T18. Mean comparisons revealed that incre

Time-Course Transcriptomic Analysis Identifies MsTIFY11B as a Promising Candidate Regulator of Salt-Alkali Tolerance in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.).

Soil salinization severely limits forage crop productivity, yet the regulatory networks that govern salt stress adaptation in alfalfa, a moderately salt-tolerant leguminous forage, remain largely unexplored. Here, we examined the physiological and transcriptomic dynamics of alfalfa leaves under 200 mM NaCl stress across three time points. Salt stress induced a progressive elevation of the Na+/K+ ratio, biphasic activation of antioxidant enzymes and concurrent accumulation of malondialdehyde. Time-course RNA-seq analysis identified 3631 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 132 core salt-re
