Predicting Subsequent Overuse Knee Injury Among Military Cadets and Midshipmen.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent during military training, with overuse knee injuries representing a major source of medical attention and time-loss. The early transition into military academy life is marked by considerable physical and psychological stressors, creating a high-risk window for injury development-particularly among individuals with an injury history. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and internally validate a multivariable prediction model for overuse knee injuries among first-year military cadets with a history of knee injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS

A preliminary prediction model for self-harm in adolescent inpatients with mental disorders: integrating individual and family factors.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm is a major public health concern among adolescents, particularly those hospitalized with psychiatric disorders. Despite its clinical salience, risk stratification tools incorporating both individual-level and family-level factors remain limited. This study aimed to develop and preliminarily evaluate a prediction model for self-harm among adolescent inpatients with mental disorders. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 123 adolescent inpatients (aged 12-17 years). Self-harm was defined as intentional self-injury or poisoning regardless of suicidal intent. Demograp

Suicide risk in prostate cancer patients: epidemiological trends and a predictive modeling.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a common malignancy among men. Although survival rates have steadily improved, some patients still face an increased risk of suicide following diagnosis. Understanding the temporal patterns and key risk factors associated with suicide after a PCa diagnosis is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. However, comprehensive models for individualized suicide risk prediction remain limited. METHODS: This study utilized data from the SEER database covering the period from 2010 to 2021. First, the suicide mortality trend among PCa patients was as

Latent pain class identification, longitudinal transitions, and machine learning prediction of incident low back pain in middle-aged and older Chinese adults.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is common among middle-aged and older Chinese adults, yet latent pain patterns, temporal transitions, and individual susceptibility factors remain unclear. Using five waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we assessed latent pain classes, their dynamic changes, and key predictors of low back pain (LBP) in adults aged ≥ 45 years. METHODS: Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify pain-site patterns at each wave, and Kendall correlations assessed associations among sites. Latent transition analysis (LTA) evaluated temporal shifts and the modif

Beyond borders: A qualitative study on the use of forensic medical evaluations in securing humanitarian parole and Title 42 exemptions.

INTRODUCTION: Forensic Medical Evaluations (FMEs), which provide objective documentation of physical and psychological consequences of past abuse, can be pivotal in immigration proceedings, offering critical evidence of persecution endured by asylum seekers, which may corroborate their claims. Yet their applicability in humanitarian parole and Title 42 exemption cases remains underexplored. AIM: To characterise the role of Istanbul Protocol-informed FMEs in support of humanitarian parole and Title 42 exemption requests in the United States, and to describe associated clinical, psychosocial, a

Building and validating a stigma prediction model for overweight and obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A observational study.

This observational study was designed to establish and validate a stigma prediction model for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The stigma risk scoring table for overweight and obese patients with PCOS has good predictive ability. When an overweight or obese patient with PCOS presents, the prediction model allows clinic staff to rapidly grade hirsutism, acne, and acanthosis, determine fertility desire, and quantify anxiety. Low-risk patients then receive standard care, whereas high-risk patients receive precision interventions. Unlike the traditional approach, this clinical predi

"No tears or brain words": A case report on single-session dance/movement therapy for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) face a multitude of challenges in their lifetime including complex symptomatology, co-morbid health concerns, profound levels of stigmatization, and diminished access to quality care. Additionally, they are often the victims of unjust systemic biases and discrimination when they are able to engage with the healthcare system. This confluence of injustices leads to disparate physical and mental health outcomes for this vulnerable population. Globally, schizophrenia affects over 24 million, many of whom are experiencin

Sleep Disturbance at Cancer Diagnosis and Its Associations With Depressive Symptoms and Systemic Inflammatory Burden.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is highly prevalent among cancer patients and closely associated with depressive symptoms. However, it remains unclear whether sleep problems present at cancer diagnosis primarily reflect depression or also indicate an underlying biological susceptibility. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationships between sleep disturbance, depressive symptoms, and systemic inflammatory-nutritional burden in newly diagnosed, treatment-naïve cancer patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)

"Our needs, our priorities, listen to us!" recommendations for improving HIV prevention and the cascade of care from people living with HIV in Manitoba, Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The Canadian province of Manitoba has reported a 52% increase in HIV diagnoses during the past 5 years. Females are disproportionately affected by HIV and multiple intersecting health and social challenges, including houselessness, injection drug use, sexually transmitted and blood borne infections, and mental health conditions. Program and service development often ignore people's complex lived experiences. Our aim was to describe recommendations made by people living with HIV (PLHIV) to inform a person-centred HIV cascade of care valuing the needs and ideas from PLHIV. METHODS:

Challenges and support needs among persons with a migration background who use drugs in four European metropolitan cities.

BACKGROUND: Persons who migrate for economic reasons, along with asylum seekers and refugees, face multiple personal experiences and societal inequalities that increase the risk of mental health problems and substance dependency, compounded by intersectional social and economic vulnerabilities. The precarious situation and limited access to care of persons with a migration background who use drugs (PMWUD) in Europe raises concern. Therefore, this qualitative study explores the challenges and support needs of a sample of PMWUD in vulnerable situations living in Amsterdam, Athens, Berlin and Par

Validation of the German language version of the Chronic Ear Survey and its psychometric comparison with an established German measurement instrument.

BACKGROUND: With the Chronic Ear Survey (CES), a validated measurement instrument for the assessment of disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been available internationally since 2000. The aim of this study was to provide a validated German version of this international instrument and to compare it with the German Chronic Otitis Media Outcome Test 15 (COMOT-15). METHODOLOGY: The CES was translated into German via a forward-backward translation process. For validation, 79 patients with COM undergoing middle ear surgery were prospectively included. HRQoL was determined pre

Diagnostic validity of premenstrual dysphoric disorder: revisited.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and American Psychiatric Association (APA) have recognised premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) as an independent diagnostic entity, legitimising the distress and socio-occupational impairment experienced by affected women. However, the biological validity of this diagnosis remains inexplicit. This illness has also been criticised for a feminist-led, sympathetic reaction to the modern cultural challenges of urban, literate, employed, high-functioning women. This article systematically reviews existing literature on PMDD using the criteria established by Ro

Patriarchal Upbringing in the 21st Century: The Impact Emotional Abuse Related to Parental Styles Has on the Genesis of Gender Inequality and the Development of Unresolved Trauma in Children.

BACKGROUND: Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) (physical, sexual, and psychological/emotional) is a type of structural discrimination that violates the basic human rights of females on a global scale. Cultural norms that glorify male dominance, power imbalances, and abuse of authority are the most encountered reasons for VAWG. Emotional abuse, which can start in childhood, is widely recognised as the most prevalent form of VAWG. However, although victims of emotional abuse usually suffer terribly, perpetrators often evade accountability. Emotional abuse is underestimated in part because i
