What to expect from immersive virtual environment exposure: influences of gender, body mass index, and past experience.

For those interested in using head-coupled PC-based immersive virtual environment (VE) technology to train, entertain, or inform, it is essential to understand the effects this technology has on its users. This study investigated potential adverse effects, including the sickness associated with exposure and extreme responses (emesis, flashbacks). Participants were exposed to a VE for 15 to 60 min, with either complete or streamlined navigational control and simple or complex scenes, after which time measures of sickness were obtained. More than 80% of participants experienced nausea, oculomoto

Changes in the central nervous system during long-duration space flight: implications for neuro-imaging.

The purpose of this paper is to review the potential functional and morphological effects of long duration space flight on the human central nervous system (CNS) and how current neuroimaging techniques may be utilized to study these effects. It must be determined if there will be any detrimental changes to the CNS from long term exposure to the space environment if human beings are to plan interplanetary missions or establish permanent space habitats. Research to date has focused primarily on the short term changes in the CNS as the result of space flight. The space environment has many factor

Pediatric orbital floor trapdoor fractures: outcomes and CT-based morphologic assessment of the inferior rectus muscle.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma to the pediatric orbit may produce a unique fracture in which entrapment of the periorbital tissue and/or inferior rectus muscle may occur due to a "trap-door" effect of the compliant orbital floor. This study was designed to assess the outcome following the surgical management of orbital trapdoor fractures in children and to examine alterations in the morphology of the inferior rectus (IR) muscle. METHODOLOGY: Outcome assessment on patients undergoing surgery at the Hospital For Sick Children, Toronto with symptomatic orbital floor trapdoor fractures over a 10-year perio

Clinical outcomes of patient mobility in a neuroscience intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Patients treated in a neuroscience intensive care unit (NICU) are often viewed as too sick to tolerate physical activity. In this study, mobility status in NICU was assessed, and factors and outcomes associated with mobility were examined. METHODS: Using a prospective design, daily mobility status, medical history, demographics, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) III score, and clinical outcomes were collected by medical records and database review. Depression, anxiety, and hostility were assessed before NICU discharge. Analyses included comparative statistics

Derealization symptoms according to the subjective visual vertical during unilateral centrifugation in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: A recent study has shown variability on the perception of verticality during unilateral centrifugation among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus; it is yet unknown if it is related to symptoms of unreality. OBJECTIVE: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to age matched healthy volunteers, to assess depersonalization/derealization (DD) symptoms before and after unilateral centrifugation, according to the subjective visual vertical (SVV). METHODS: 47 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 50 age matched healthy volunteers participated in the study. They replied

Less common neuro-otologic disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A systematic approach to the history and examination allows the physician to diagnose the most common vestibular disorders of the brain or inner ear. However, some less common disorders require a specific familiarity so that they are not misdiagnosed as one of the more common disorders, treated inappropriately, or misattributed to a psychogenic etiology. This article describes four of the less common disorders that can present with a primary problem of dizziness and imbalance: (1) mal de débarquement syndrome, (2) bilateral vestibulopathy, (3) cerebellar ataxia, and (4) vesti

Motorist's disorientation syndrome (MDS) is seen in 1 to 5% of patients in a tertiary neurotology clinic and remains an underdiagnosed patho … fferentiate MDS from similar syndromes, such as persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and motion sickness (MS). In addition, we looked at the role of vestibular assessments and discussed the involvement of the otolith organs and semicircular canals. In this review, eight publications were analyzed. MDS is related to a visual-vestibular or a visio-visual …

False-Positive Rates, Risk Factors, and Interpretations of the Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening in Collegiate Athletes.

CONTEXT: Biological sex and history of motion sickness are known modifiers associated with a false-positive baseline Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS). However, other factors may be associated with a false-positive VOMS in collegiate athletes. OBJECTIVE: To identify contributing factors to false-positive VOMS assessments using population-specific criteria. We also critically appraised previously reported interpretation criteria. RNA sequencing least shrew (Cryptotis parva) brainstem and gut transcripts following administration of a selective substance P neurokinin NK1 receptor agonist and antagonist expands genomics resources for emesis research.

The least shrew is among the subset of animals that are capable of vomiting and therefore serves as a valuable research model for investigating the biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, and genomics of emesis. Both nausea and vomiting are associated with a variety of illnesses (bacterial/viral infections, bulimia, exposure to toxins, gall bladder disease), conditions (pregnancy, motion sickness, emotional stress, overeating) and reactions to drugs (chemotherapeutics, opiates). The severe discomfort and intense fear associated with the stressful symptoms of nausea and emesis are the ma…

Risk Factors of Postoperative Vomiting in the Eye of "Real-World Evidence"-Modifiable and Clinical Setting-Dependent Risk Factors in Surgical Trauma Patients.

Numerous studies on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) have been carried out since the early days of contemporary surgery. The incidence of PONV has been greatly reduced in recent years and new drugs for PONV keep evolving in the market; however, a substantial number of patients are still under the threat of PONV. Female gender, non-smokers, a history of PONV/motion sickness, and postoperative opioid use are four well-recognized risk factors of PONV. Many potential risk factors reported in previous studies were not consistently presented as predictors for PONV. Two questions then arise; …

[Update on PONV-What is new in prophylaxis and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting? : Summary of recent consensus recommendations and Cochrane reviews on prophylaxis and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting].

The prophylaxis and treatment of postoperative pain to enhance patient comfort has been a primary goal of anesthesiologists for the last decades; however, avoiding postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is, from a patient's perspective, a highly relevant and equally important goal of anesthesia. Recent consensus-based guidelines suggest the assessment of risk factors including female gender, postoperative opioid administration, non-smoking status, a history of PONV or motion sickness, young patient age, longer duration of anesthesia, volatile anesthetics and the type of surgery and reducing …

Maternal administration of meclozine for the treatment of foramen magnum stenosis in transgenic mice with achondroplasia.

OBJECTIVE Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common short-limbed skeletal dysplasia caused by gain-of-function mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. Foramen magnum stenosis (FMS) is one of the serious neurological complications in ACH. Through comprehensive drug screening, the authors identified that meclozine, an over-the-counter drug for motion sickness, inhibited activation of FGFR3 signaling. Oral administration of meclozine to the growing ACH mice promoted longitudinal bone growth, but it did not prevent FMS. In the current study, the authors evaluated the effec…
